Start with the seller and buying channel
Coach says authentic products are sold through Coach retail and outlet stores, its official websites, and authorized department and specialty stores. Compare the seller with those channels before trying to judge small details on the bag. Coach does not publish a complete public list of authorized distributors in the cited guidance, and says it does not respond to requests to identify them. Coach specifically warns buyers to be cautious of flea markets, street vendors, mall kiosks, websites that imitate or misspell its name, and offers that seem too good to be true. A site’s appearance is not enough: counterfeit websites may copy the layout and look of coach.com. Auction listings also deserve scrutiny; a seller’s claim that an item is authentic does not settle the question.
Assess a secondhand listing without treating clues as proof
No public checklist can guarantee that an individual Coach bag is genuine. Use the available details together as risk indicators, not as a pass/fail formula.

- Ask about provenance. Request where and when the bag was bought and whether the seller has a receipt, order confirmation, or other purchase documentation. Records can make a seller’s account easier to assess, but a document alone is not conclusive proof.
- Request clear views. For a resale listing, ask for unedited photographs of the entire bag, interior, hangtag, Storypatch or creed area if present, hardware, stitching, and any paperwork the seller offers. Missing views or reluctance to provide them leave more uncertainty; they do not by themselves prove a counterfeit.
- Compare the exact style. Where reliable Coach product information is available, see whether the model and configuration match. A matching style name, logo, tag, or registration number is not independently conclusive.
- Consider the sales context. Unusually low pricing, pressure to buy immediately, or a suspicious web address are reasons for caution under Coach’s own guidance. They are warning signs, not proof that a particular bag is fake.
What hangtags and Storypatches can—and cannot—tell you
Coach’s May 2026 editorial describes the hangtag as a design element that debuted in 1972 as a badge of authenticity. It also describes the Storypatch as a heritage feature bearing a unique registration number and says, in Coach’s words, “every Coach bag has one.” These descriptions explain the features’ place in Coach’s design history; they do not establish that a hangtag or number, considered alone, verifies a bag. Do not rely on the claim that every bag has a serial number Coach can verify. The cited public guidance does not describe a serial-number verification service or a model-by-model visual authentication test. A feature’s presence, absence, or appearance needs to be considered in context, and the sources here do not support a universal rule for judging every model or era.

Coach does not authenticate bags from photos or on request
Coach’s FAQ states: “We do not respond to requests to authenticate product or identify authorized distributors.” That means a photo submission or customer-service inquiry should not be presented as an official authentication route. If you suspect a counterfeit listing, Coach’s brand-protection guidance provides a reporting form and hotline; reporting a listing is distinct from receiving a verdict on your bag. Keep repair separate from authentication
Coach’s US repair page explains its repair process, including workshop evaluation for repair needs. It does not describe that evaluation as an authentication service. Coach recommends keeping receipts or order confirmations to help locate purchase history for repairs, but those records should not be treated as an authenticity certificate.
