A cat may fit your lifestyle if your home can be made safe, everyone agrees to share daily care, you can plan for veterinary costs, and the household has considered allergies. The best test is not whether cats are “low-maintenance” in general, but whether you can meet the needs of a particular cat consistently. Use the checklist below, then discuss your home and schedule with a shelter or rescue before deciding.
Start with the home and household
Check the practical conditions before you fall in love with a particular cat. Confirm that your lease, building rules, and local requirements allow a cat; those rules vary, so verify the current requirements where you live.

A cat needs a safe place to rest, a litter box in a quiet and accessible location, and opportunities to climb or otherwise use vertical space. ASPCA advises keeping cats indoors and considering vertical space when choosing a home (ASPCA cat care guidance). There is no universal square-footage threshold in the cited guidance: layout, safety, usable space, and the individual cat’s needs matter more than a single number.

- Prepare a quiet room or area where a new cat can settle gradually.
- Secure windows and doors, and remove hazardous plants and objects.
- Plan for a litter box, scratching post, resting areas, and a carrier for transport and veterinary visits.
- Make sure everyone in the household accepts the day-to-day work and understands that cats may scratch, shed, or need time to adjust.
If you have children or other pets, ask the shelter about the specific cat’s known responses to them. Arrange gradual introductions rather than assuming every cat will adapt in the same way.

Be realistic about daily time and care
Working full time does not automatically rule out having a cat, but a cat still needs reliable daily care. “Independent” does not mean that food, water, litter, play, attention, and health monitoring can be left unattended.
ASPCA’s responsible-care guidance includes appropriate food and water, veterinary care, grooming, exercise, social interaction, and prompt treatment of illness or injury (ASPCA responsible pet ownership guidance). Consider whether your ordinary schedule leaves time to:

Consider allergies honestly
Cat allergens are proteins found in dander, saliva, urine, and sebaceous cells, according to ASPCA. The organization states, “Fur length and type will not affect or prevent allergies,” and reactions can differ from one animal to another (ASPCA guidance on cat allergies). A short-haired cat or a particular coat type is not a reliable way to avoid an allergic reaction.

Choose for the individual cat, not a stereotype
Tell the shelter or rescue about your home, schedule, household members, and experience with pets. Ask what is known about the cat’s age, health, activity level, behavior, and response to children or other animals. Meet the cat if possible, and ask whether fostering is available locally.
When comparing cats, focus on the differences that affect your day-to-day life:
| What to compare | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Care needs | Are there known health conditions, grooming needs, or veterinary follow-ups? How might age affect care? |
| Household fit | What has been observed around children, visitors, or other animals? What is still unknown? |
| Activity and interaction | How does the cat play and socialize, and can you reliably make time for that? |
| Practical cost | What is the adoption fee, what supplies are needed, and are there known additional care needs? |
Breed, coat length, and labels such as “low-maintenance” cannot guarantee personality, allergy safety, or cost. Ask about the individual animal and be candid about what your household can provide. ASPCA’s adoption guidance recommends preparing the home and arranging veterinary care; it notes, “You want your pet to live a long, healthy, happy life, so it’s important to plan for regular veterinary care” (ASPCA adoption tips).
