How to Tell When It’s Time to Replace Your TV

Age alone does not tell you when to replace a TV. Weigh its condition, a repair quote, energy use, and the benefits of a suitable upgrade.

There is no standard age at which every TV should be replaced. Decide based on whether it still works for your household, what a repair would cost, how its energy use compares, and whether a replacement would solve a real limitation.

Should you replace your TV?

Start with the problem, not the television’s age. If the set works reliably and meets your needs, age alone is not a reason to discard it. The available guidance does not establish a universal TV lifespan or a TV-specific repair-cost threshold.

If the TV has a fault

Get a repair estimate, then compare it with the price of a replacement that actually suits your household. Include the set’s age and depreciation in the decision: Consumer Reports’ repair-or-replace tool considers those factors alongside repair and replacement costs, but does not provide a universal TV rule. A quote for your particular model and location is more useful than a percentage threshold applied to every set.

If it still works

Ask whether it has a concrete shortcoming: for example, a feature you need, picture performance that disappoints in your room, or energy use that matters to your budget. A smart-TV platform can provide direct access to streaming services, but wanting built-in streaming alone does not mean an otherwise suitable TV must be replaced.

How much should energy use affect the decision?

Energy cost can help compare a working set with a replacement, but it is one factor rather than a standalone reason to discard a TV. The U.S. Department of Energy says its Appliance Energy Calculator can estimate a television’s electricity cost; screen size and display type affect consumption.

DOE’s December 2024 guidance gives an illustrative comparison for a 54.5-inch LED TV: 168 kWh per year for a model meeting ENERGY STAR limits and 235 kWh per year for a less-efficient comparison. Those estimates assume 1,825 hours of active use and 6,935 hours in standby annually, a five-year product life, and electricity at 11 cents per kWh—the average at federal facilities as of July 2024. In that calculation, estimated lifetime energy cost is $78 for the ENERGY STAR example and $109 for the less-efficient one. These are not guaranteed household savings; actual use and electricity rates vary. The five-year product life is an input to DOE’s calculation, not a claim that every TV lasts five years.

DOE also notes that the default picture setting is used to earn the ENERGY STAR label. A label or estimate does not replace checking how you use the TV and what electricity costs where you live.

What to compare when choosing a replacement

If replacement makes sense, compare the options against the reason you are shopping, your room, and your budget—not a feature label in isolation. Consumer Reports’ TV buying guide describes OLED and LCD (often marketed as LED) as the two basic TV types.

Comparison What to consider
Display type OLED is noted for deep blacks, contrast, color accuracy, viewing angles, and fast response. LCD performance and price vary; some higher-performing LCD models use local dimming or Mini LED.
Resolution 4K/UHD means 3840 × 2160 pixels. The guide says the detail benefit is most apparent on larger screens, around 65 inches or bigger.
HDR HDR matters for supported content and picture quality, but an HDR label alone does not guarantee equally rich performance. Compare the actual picture and price.
Smart-TV features Useful if you want streaming services directly on the television; not, by itself, proof that replacement is necessary.

Most 4K sets support HDR, according to the guide, but your viewing environment and content matter. Also consider screen size, seating distance, room conditions, energy consumption, budget, and the specific fault or limitation you want to address.
