A public roadmap is useful for judging planning only if it preserves what the organization said before plans changed. To tell whether a prediction aged badly, compare its original wording and target date with the eventual outcome—without treating every revised plan as a broken promise. First check whether the entry was direction, a forecast, a target, or an explicit commitment.
What does it mean for a roadmap prediction to age badly?
A prediction aged badly when its stated outcome did not happen as described, or its target date passed without the promised result. A roadmap item changing is not, by itself, proof of failure: it may have been an estimate, a broad direction, or a target that the organization clearly said could move.

The distinction depends on the claim as it appeared at the time. “We intend to explore” is not equivalent to “this will ship by June.” A useful record lets readers see the exact language, date, and uncertainty attached to each item rather than judging it from a later, edited version.

Check what the roadmap says its dates and labels mean
Before scoring an item, identify what kind of statement it was and whether anyone made a commitment. Public roadmaps do not all serve the same purpose, and an expected release window is not automatically a delivery promise.

- Direction: A statement of priorities or vision, often without a specific delivery date.
- Forecast: A prediction about what is likely to happen, ideally with a stated confidence level or uncertainty.
- Target: An intended date or outcome that may be revised; check the roadmap’s own definition.
- Commitment: An explicit promise by an identified party, subject to any conditions stated with it.
These distinctions appear in real roadmap guidance. GitHub says its forward-looking public roadmap is a general outline of development plans and “does not represent a commitment, guarantee, obligation or promise” to deliver a feature or meet a particular date (GitHub public roadmap). Mattermost distinguishes public product direction, estimated timelines, its internal roadmap, and its release plan; its handbook says release-plan dates are targets, not commitments, and items may move, be added, or be removed (Mattermost roadmap views). Those statements describe those organizations’ roadmaps, not a universal legal rule.
Look for the original prediction and a dated change history
A current status alone cannot show whether a prediction changed. The roadmap should preserve the original entry or a versioned snapshot, including its wording, publication date, target date, and any publicly stated confidence. Stable identifiers make it possible to follow an item through edits without confusing it with a replacement.

Changes should remain visible: when an item was moved, narrowed, removed, or completed, the record should show when that happened and why. Microsoft’s APM governance guidance says not to silently carry unfinished work forward. It calls for an explicit decision to retain, move, or remove an unfinished target, with a reason on the issue, and for completed issues and milestone history to be retained. Its “Now,” “Next,” and “Later” horizons help communicate timing, but placement and ordering do not authorize implementation or guarantee delivery; release milestones are plausible cohorts, not guaranteed dates (Microsoft APM roadmap and release planning).
A public example of why explanations matter is Anthropic’s Frontier Safety Roadmap. It records a change moving a Phase 1 target from May 15 to September 30, 2026, and explains that resources were redirected to another safety goal. It also records removal of a date-bound data-retention goal after the organization judged that other processes would provide adequate forcing functions. Anthropic notes that some details are redacted for safety and security reasons, so a transparent history need not expose sensitive information (Anthropic Frontier Safety Roadmap).

Judge the outcome against the claim as written
Set assessment criteria before reviewing outcomes. For each item, define what would count as a hit, a partial result, a miss, or a claim too vague to test. Then assess it at the target date, using the original wording rather than a later rewrite. A missed date and a missed outcome are related but distinct: a feature may arrive late, or the date may pass while the scope changes.
- Hit: The stated outcome occurred within the stated terms and timeframe.
- Partial: Some, but not all, of the stated outcome occurred, or it arrived outside a clearly stated timeframe.
- Miss: The stated outcome did not occur, or the specified target date passed without it.
- Too vague to test: The entry lacks a sufficiently clear outcome or timeframe to support a reliable verdict.
These are practical categories, not a universal scoring standard. The important thing is to define them and attach evidence to each assessment. Hindsight, a public project that grades forecasts against subsequent outcomes, uses stable IDs for dated claims, names sources, cites evidence for verdicts, and preserves a history of grade changes. It distinguishes forecast verdicts such as hit, partial, miss, and unfalsifiable from other forms of assessment; scenarios and depictions in fiction are not graded simply right or wrong. Its release hindsight-2026.2, dated October 2, 2026, reports 28,306 dated claims from 36 sources. That is a project-reported dataset figure, not an independent measure of company roadmap accuracy (Envisioning Hindsight).

Evidence should support the specific verdict, and readers should have a way to submit corrections or challenge an assessment. Keep item-level judgments visible rather than reducing a mixed record to an unexplained score. Hindsight says it does not calculate a total score or rank forecasters, an approach that avoids implying more certainty than varied claims allow.
Separate feedback and visibility from forecasting accuracy
Public roadmaps can make priorities easier to discuss and give users a channel for feedback. But votes, comments, and page views show interest or engagement; they do not establish that an item shipped or that the organization forecast accurately.

In a February 24, 2026 account, Port said publishing plans creates accountability and reported 1,250+ feature ideas, 10,450 votes, 1,726 comments, and 43,200 users on its roadmap page. Those are Port’s own figures, not independent measures of roadmap quality. Port also cautioned that high vote counts do not guarantee a feature will ship, while helping prompt an explanation when it will not ship right now (Port, “Why We Made Our Product Roadmap Public”).
A quick way to assess a public roadmap
- Find the original entry. Check whether its wording and publication date are preserved, preferably with a stable item ID.
- Identify its status as a claim. Decide whether it was direction, forecast, target, or an explicit commitment; read the roadmap’s definitions and disclaimers.
- Check the history. Look for dated edits, moved or removed items, and plain-language explanations rather than silent carryovers.
- Compare outcome with wording. Apply defined criteria at the stated target date, distinguishing a late delivery from an outcome that never happened.
- Inspect the evidence and correction path. The verdict should cite relevant evidence, and there should be a way to dispute or correct it.
When comparing organizations, use the same questions for each: how clearly commitments are separated from estimates, whether past statements are preserved, whether updates have dates and reasons, whether claims are testable, whether verdicts cite evidence, and whether readers can provide feedback.
