There is no single symptom that proves a smartphone has been hacked. Persistent pop-ups, unfamiliar changes, or messages sent without your knowledge are reasons to investigate; slow performance or battery drain alone are not a diagnosis. Check the phone and its linked accounts separately, then use the official tools for your platform.
Which signs are worth checking?
Google says malware might be present when an Android phone has persistent pop-up ads, runs unusually slowly, loses available storage, malfunctions, or shows unexpected browser changes. Messages sent to your contacts without your knowledge are another warning sign. These clues can have other causes, so treat them as leads rather than proof. Google’s Android malware guidance describes them as possible signs, not a definitive test.
- Unexpected activity: Messages or other actions you did not initiate deserve prompt attention.
- Persistent changes: Repeated pop-ups, browser changes, or unexplained malfunction are more concerning than a one-off glitch.
- Slowness or reduced storage: Check for other explanations, such as an app or storage demand, before concluding the phone is compromised.
- Battery drain: By itself, it does not establish that someone has accessed your phone. Apple notes shorter battery life in the specific context of unauthorized iOS modification, but that does not make ordinary battery drain a reliable hack detector. Check your accounts as well as your phone
Someone may be using a Google or Apple account even when the phone has no obvious symptoms. Look for unfamiliar sign-ins or devices, changes to recovery details or important security settings, and financial activity you do not recognize. Google identifies unfamiliar activity of this kind as a reason to secure an account. Google’s compromised-account guidance explains what to review.
If a Google Account may be in someone else’s hands, change its password promptly, verify the recovery phone number and email, and review signed-in devices. Remove devices you do not recognize using Google’s account security controls.

Use the checks built into your phone
On an iPhone with iOS 16 or later
Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Safety Check. Safety Check can help you review what you share with people and apps, devices connected to your Apple Account, app privacy permissions, your passcode, and your Apple Account password. Some options may be limited by Screen Time restrictions or a mobile-device-management profile. Apple’s Safety Check instructions cover the feature and its limits.
On Android
Install available Android and security updates, remove apps you do not trust or recognize as coming from a legitimate source, and review the security of your Google Account. Google recommends these steps when malware is suspected. If warning signs persist after you have taken them, Google says a factory reset or help from the device manufacturer may be necessary. Respond to concrete warnings proportionately
An iPhone says an app contains malware
If iOS displays an alert that a third-party app contains malware and cannot be opened, Apple says to delete that app. Follow the on-screen warning rather than trying to bypass it. Apple’s instructions for this alert explain what to do.
Suspicious account activity appears
Secure the affected account: change its password, check that its recovery details are yours, and remove unfamiliar signed-in devices. Do this even if you have not found a clear sign of compromise on the phone itself. Google’s account guidance gives the specific steps for a Google Account.

Malware-like behavior continues on Android
If updates and removal of untrusted apps do not resolve the signs, follow Google’s advice to consider a device reset or contact the manufacturer for help. A reset is disruptive, so make sure you understand what you will lose and have a suitable backup before proceeding.
Know when an Apple threat notification is different
Apple threat notifications are not routine warnings about slow performance or battery life. Apple says they are sent to users it believes are individually targeted by mercenary spyware. The notification appears on the device and in the account. Verify it by signing in directly at account.apple.com, rather than following a link in a message. Apple recommends expert assistance, including the Digital Security Helpline at Access Now. Apple’s threat-notification guidance describes verification and next steps.

Apple says a genuine threat notification will not ask you to click links, open files, install apps or profiles, or provide your Apple Account password or verification code by email or phone. Treat anyone making those requests as suspicious, even if the message claims to be urgent. Apple’s guidance explains how to handle notifications safely.

- Use a device passcode and keep the operating system and apps current; updates often include important security fixes.
- Back up the phone regularly so recovery is less costly if it is lost or needs resetting.
- Enable the platform’s lost-phone feature so you can locate, lock, or erase a missing device.
- Do not follow alarming pop-ups or unsolicited instructions to install a security profile, reveal credentials, or pay for an urgent fix. Verify security notices through the platform’s official account or settings instead.
