How do I check whether my iPhone is charging?
Check the battery icon in the status bar. A lightning bolt on the icon is the quickest confirmation that charging is underway. If you want to see a number, turn on Battery Percentage at Settings > Battery. On Face ID models, the percentage appears inside the status-bar battery symbol; you can also swipe down from the top-right corner to open Control Center and see it there. For wireless charging, check the phone’s placement
Make sure the iPhone is properly aligned on the charger. Apple says a charging symbol appears when MagSafe charging starts; for other iPhone models aligned on MagSafe, a battery charging icon appears. If the bolt is absent, reposition the phone and check again. Apple’s MagSafe charging instructions cover the alignment indication.
Allow time if the screen is blank
A very low battery may not show a useful status immediately. Apple says the low-battery image can take up to two minutes to appear in an extremely low-power state, and a very low iPhone may need up to ten minutes of charging before it can be used. Apple Support gives these timing estimates.

What does Settings > Battery tell me?
When the icon alone does not explain what is happening, open Settings > Battery. On iOS 26, Apple says supported iPhones can show an estimated time to reach 80 percent or 100 percent, or the selected charge limit. The page can also display an Incompatible Charger message if the connected charger is not charging the phone. On iOS 18 and later, a Slow Charger message may appear when a higher-wattage power source could improve charging. Availability and labels depend on the iPhone model and iOS version. Why is my iPhone stuck near 80 percent?
A pause around 80 percent does not necessarily mean the iPhone or charger is faulty. Three common explanations are battery optimization, a user-set charge limit, or temperature.

Optimized Battery Charging
Optimized Battery Charging learns your routine and may delay charging beyond 80 percent when the iPhone expects to remain connected for an extended time. Apple says it needs at least 14 days to learn habits and at least nine long charges of five hours or more in one location before the feature engages. When it is active, a Lock Screen notification says when the iPhone is expected to be fully charged. Touch and hold the notification and choose Charge Now if you need it to finish sooner. iPhone 15 models and later can use a Charge Limit that stops charging close to a selected cap. Apple says the limit can be set from 80 to 100 percent in five-point steps; the iPhone may resume charging if its level falls more than five points below that limit. Check the selected setting if charging regularly stops near a particular percentage. Apple Support documents the charge-limit behavior.

Temperature or normal slowdown
Heat or cold can temporarily pause charging. On iOS 16 and later, the Lock Screen and Settings > Battery can show: “Charging On Hold. Charging will resume when [device] returns to normal temperature.” Move a hot iPhone away from direct sunlight to a cooler place, or move a cold one somewhere warmer; lock the screen if the phone is in use. Apple also notes that charging naturally slows after about 80 percent to reduce battery stress and heat. Apple’s temperature guidance explains the hold message.
Why is my iPhone not showing that it is charging?
If there is no lightning bolt, work through the power source and connection before assuming the phone needs repair.

- Check the power source. Try a wall outlet or another known powered source. If you are charging from a computer, make sure it is turned on; a powered-off computer may drain the iPhone instead of charging it. Apple’s charging instructions cover supported methods.
- Inspect the cable and adapter. Check for damage or bent parts, ensure every plug is firmly connected, and stop using damaged accessories.
- Try another outlet and inspect the port. If the first socket does not work, try a different one. Check the charging port for debris, then reconnect the cable firmly.
- Give a deeply depleted phone time. Leave it charging for 30 minutes. If it still will not turn on, follow Apple’s force-restart instructions for your specific model, then charge it for another 30 minutes. If it still will not charge or power on, Apple says service may be needed. Apple’s no-charge troubleshooting steps provide the model-specific restart instructions.
If you suspect liquid is in the port, do not plug in a cable. Follow Apple’s guidance on charging and liquid exposure instead.

If you see an accessory-not-supported alert
Connect the charger directly, without intermediate adapters or other equipment. Check the port for debris, restart the iPhone, try another USB cable or charger, and check for the latest iOS version. Apple’s troubleshooting guidance lists these steps.

Which charging method should I use?
Apple supports charging from a wall outlet with a compatible cable and USB power adapter, from a computer that is turned on, or wirelessly with a MagSafe or Qi-certified charger. For faster charging, match the accessory to the iPhone’s connector and model:

These are compatibility recommendations, not a reason to buy a new accessory if your current one charges reliably. Identify your iPhone model and check whether your cable, adapter, or charger is damaged or insufficient before replacing it. Apple’s charging-speed guidance details the faster-charging options.
