A black screen or “No signal” message doesn’t prove your HDMI cable is bad. The quickest useful test is to reconnect it, confirm the correct input, then swap in a known-working cable without changing the rest of the setup. If the replacement works and the original does not, the original cable is likely faulty or unable to handle the signal you’re using.
Signs an HDMI cable may be bad
A damaged or unreliable cable can interrupt the connection between a source device—such as a computer, console, or streaming device—and a TV or monitor. Possible symptoms include:

- A “No signal” message or no picture.
- A picture that cuts in and out, flickers, or disappears when the cable is moved.
- Audio dropping out along with the picture.
- A connection that works at a lower resolution or refresh rate but fails when you select a more demanding mode.
These symptoms are clues, not a diagnosis. A source that is off or asleep, a loose plug, the wrong display input, a faulty port, or an incompatible signal setting can produce similar problems. The symptom alone cannot identify the cable as the cause.
How to test whether the cable is the problem
Change one thing at a time. That makes the result more useful: if you replace the cable and keep the source, display, port, and settings the same, you can isolate the cable more clearly.
#1 Best Overall
- 【Multi-Function Tester】Test HDMI cables (HDMI 1.1/1.2/1.3/1.4/2.0) and network cables (RJ45) with ease
- 【Quick & Accurate Testing】 Scan and test up to 19 wires to detect short circuit, open circuit, or wrong order - Save time and money
- 【Two Test Modes】 Choose between fast scan mode and full display mode for more comprehensive testing
- 【Superior Compatibility】Supports HDMI (Type A), and RJ45 connectors - Perfect for all your devices
- 【Auto Shut-Down Function】 Save battery life with automatic shut-down after 10 minutes of inactivity - Convenient and energy-efficient
- Check the source and input. Make sure the connected device is powered on and awake. On the TV or monitor, select the HDMI input that the cable actually uses.
- Reconnect both ends. Unplug the cable at the source and display, then plug it firmly back in. If the setup includes several devices or adapters, simplify it to one source connected directly to the display for the test.
- Try another HDMI port. Move the cable to a different port on the display, then select the input for that port. If available, try a different port on the source as well.
- Swap in a known-working cable. Keep the same source, display, port, and signal settings. If the replacement restores the picture, the original cable is a strong suspect. Microsoft’s Windows display troubleshooting guide likewise recommends trying another cable; Samsung also recommends cable and port checks.
- Test the original cable in another setup, if possible. Use it with a different source or display known to work. If it fails there too, that strengthens the case against the cable. If the replacement also fails in the original setup, continue checking the source, display, ports, and settings; that result does not prove either cable is bad.
Some TVs have a built-in HDMI troubleshooting or cable test. Its availability and menu location depend on the TV model. Samsung’s support guidance describes connection checks and a cable test on supported models; consult your TV’s own support information for the applicable steps.
When the cable works at one resolution but not another
An HDMI cable can work at a less demanding video mode and fail at a higher resolution, refresh rate, or feature setting because the signal requires more bandwidth than the cable supports. In that case, the cable may not be physically defective; it may simply be unsuitable for the mode selected.

- PRECISION TESTING: Evaluates HDMI cables for shorts, open circuits, or incorrect wire pairings for each wire pair
- VERSATILE USE: Perfect for use on 1.2V, 1.3V, 1.4V, 2.0V HDMI or Mini HDMI cables. Works on any cable length (tested up to 500 m)
- REMOTE TESTING: Remote can be detached from the main unit, allowing you to quickly and easily test HDMI cables that are installed or very long
- SCAN MODE: Allows you to see each individual connection being tested
- FULL DISPLAY MODE: Shows all of the tested connections at once
Check the requirements of both the source and the display, including resolution, refresh rate, and features such as HDR. Then compare those requirements with the cable’s official type. The connector shape alone does not show which video modes a cable supports.

| Cable type | Stated capability or example application |
|---|---|
| Standard HDMI Cable | Designed for earlier applications, including 720p or 1080i. |
| High Speed HDMI Cable | Up to 10.2 Gbps; includes applications such as 4K at 30 Hz. |
| Premium High Speed HDMI Cable | Certified for 18 Gbps; includes applications such as 4K at 60 Hz and HDR. |
| Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable | Up to 48 Gbps; supports high-bandwidth modes including 4K at 120 Hz and 8K at 60 Hz. |
| Ultra96 HDMI Cable | Up to 96 Gbps for the HDMI 2.2 specification’s highest-bandwidth applications. |
These figures describe cable capabilities, not how often cables fail. The official sources cited here do not establish a general consumer HDMI cable failure rate.
How to check a replacement cable’s label
HDMI LA says cable products should use the official cable name on the cable jacket, with the relevant name logo or certification label on the package. For Ultra High Speed and Ultra96 cables, scan the QR code on the certification label to check product details and certification status. A reseller’s marketing description by itself is not proof of certification.

- The Main and Remote Unit: The Mini HDMI/LAN Cable Tester consists of a main unit and remote unit. The remote unit stores conveniently on the side of the main unit
- Advantage 1 for HDMI Cable: This HDMI tester can quickly scan and test up to 19 wires and decide which one is short circuit, open circuit, or in the wrong order. Supported Connector: HDMI (Type A); HDMI Mini (Type C)
- Advantage 2 for Network Cable: For cables with RJ45 Connector (battery/charger not included). The LED lights will flash in rotation if all the wires are properly connected, otherwise the corresponding light will not flash
- Power Source: The main unit can be powered by a single 1.5V AAA battery or using your phone's USB charger power supply
Choose a cable that meets the actual needs of the source and display. Compare the required video mode and cable type, certification details, length, and connector type. A higher cable class is not automatically necessary if your equipment does not need it.
What to do if a cable swap doesn’t fix it
If a known-working replacement does not restore the picture, work through the remaining parts of the setup rather than assuming the original cable is good or bad. Check that the source is producing a signal, select the matching display input, try other ports, and test another source or display if you can. A built-in display or TV diagnostic may help when the model offers one. Microsoft’s and Samsung’s troubleshooting guides cover these kinds of isolation steps.
