To tell whether QSSR improves a PS5 game’s image, first confirm the game has a QSSR patch and exposes the option. Then compare the same scene with QSSR on and off, changing nothing else. Look closely at fine detail and watch whether edges and textures stay stable as objects move. QSSR is title-dependent; installing a PS5 system update alone does not add it to every game.
What QSSR is—and where to look for it
Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) is Sony’s AI-upscaling option for PS5. Sony describes it as a performance tier distinct from PSSR, which it calls the higher standard on PS5 Pro. QSSR is not automatically available in every PS5 game: each title needs support through a game patch, and the option must appear in that game’s graphics settings. Sony’s October 1, 2026 announcement named Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as the first titles being patched to offer QSSR as an additional graphics option on PS5.

Check the game before changing console settings
Look in the game’s current patch notes and graphics menu for QSSR. The feature’s availability can change as patches arrive, so the presence of QSSR in one title does not establish support in another. A PS5 system software update is separate from the title patch.
If you need to check for a console update, Sony’s route is Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings, then select Update System Software if Update Available appears. The system update does not replace a game patch or guarantee that a game offers QSSR. See Sony’s PS5 system software update instructions.

Compare QSSR on and off in a repeatable scene
Sony has not published a consumer A/B testing procedure. The steps below are a practical way to make the comparison more meaningful, based on the image qualities Sony says QSSR targets.
- Find a scene you can reproduce. Choose a saved location, repeatable camera view, or other scene where you can return to roughly the same position.
- Keep the conditions fixed. Use the same game mode, camera position, display settings, and scene conditions for both views.
- Change only QSSR. Compare the scene with the option enabled and disabled. If the game also changes its mode or resolution behavior, account for that rather than attributing every visible difference to QSSR.
- Inspect fine detail. Look at thin edges, character features, small environmental details, and dense geometry. These are the kinds of details developers cited when describing QSSR.
- Watch the same details in motion. Observe edges and textures as the camera or objects move. Note whether they remain steady or flicker, shimmer, or break up.
- Record what you actually see. If the difference is subtle or absent in that scene, say so; one comparison cannot establish a universal result across every scene or game.
What changes should you look for?
| What to inspect | What a visible improvement may look like |
|---|---|
| Fine detail and edges | Small features or thin edges appear clearer and better resolved. |
| Stability during motion | Fine detail remains more consistent as the camera or objects move, rather than appearing to flicker or shimmer. |
| Busy scenes | Dense environments retain more visible detail without that detail breaking up as the view changes. |
These are comparison cues, not guaranteed outcomes. Sony’s announcement describes QSSR’s image improvements qualitatively; it gives no numerical benchmark, measured percentage, or controlled consumer test result. Sony also does not claim that every artifact disappears in every game.

How to interpret what you see
Sony’s cited developer comments offer useful context but are not independent measurements. Mike Fitzgerald, Head of Technology at Insomniac Games, said QSSR adds “more pixel-level clarity and stability” and extra detail in busy environments in Marvel’s Wolverine. Jasmin Patry, Lead Rendering Engineer at Sucker Punch Productions, said QSSR resolves fine character and environment detail with temporal stability in Ghost of Yōtei. Those comments describe the developers’ experience with their games; they do not establish that every PS5 title will show the same change.

If you see a clearer edge or steadier detail with QSSR enabled under otherwise matched conditions, that is evidence of a visible improvement in that scene. If you do not see a clear difference, it does not prove QSSR has no effect elsewhere: the result may depend on the game, scene, and movement being compared. Keep any conclusion scoped to the title and conditions you tested.
