To find out whether a game will survive a server shutdown, check the publisher’s latest notice for your exact platform and edition, map each mode and feature to its server dependency, verify launch and save requirements, and—when supported—test the installed copy with the internet disconnected. A shutdown may remove matchmaking or user-created content while leaving a campaign playable, or it may make the entire title inaccessible. There is no reliable industry-wide percentage for either outcome, so the answer has to be title-specific.
What “works offline” actually means
Offline compatibility is not a yes-or-no property of a game. A title can contain several systems with different dependencies:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
| Game component | What to establish | Possible result after shutdown |
|---|---|---|
| Campaign or story mode | Whether it loads and saves without contacting a publisher service | Remains playable, becomes partly limited, or stops at launch |
| Local multiplayer | Whether two or more players can connect on the same console or network without matchmaking | Often remains available, but only if the game can start offline |
| Online multiplayer and matchmaking | Whether sessions require the retired servers | Usually removed when the service ends |
| User-generated content | Whether missions, levels, replays, or sharing use a hosted service | Creation may remain local while browsing or downloading ends |
| Cloud saves and account functions | Where saves are stored and whether an account sign-in is mandatory | Cloud access can disappear even when local saves still work |
| Downloadable content and virtual items | Whether licenses are installed locally and whether content calls a server | Already installed content may work, or online checks may block it |
That is why one game can lose its online features yet retain an offline campaign, while another becomes unplayable. PlayStation’s shutdown notices illustrate both outcomes: the campaigns in inFAMOUS 2 and inFAMOUS Festival of Blood remain playable after their user-created-mission services end, whereas GUNS UP! will not be playable because it requires an online connection. The same notice says portions of Gran Turismo Sport remain available offline.
“Offline” can also mean different things to different owners. One person may need only a story campaign; another may depend on a cloud-backed career, a purchased expansion, local multiplayer or saved replays. Define the features you actually need before judging whether the title survives.

The reliable checking method
1. Find the latest official notice for the exact title
Search the publisher’s support or news site using the game’s full name plus “server sunset,” “service shutdown,” “online service ending,” or “offline.” Use the notice itself rather than a forum summary. Confirm that it covers your platform, edition, storefront and territory. A console version, a PC edition and a remastered release can have different authentication and content rules.
Record the publication date, any “updated” date, the announcement’s effective date and the date on which sales or downloads stop. Shutdown plans can change, so the newest notice controls your decision. A notice may describe several separate deadlines: the last day to buy the game, the last day to download it, the retirement of online modes and the date on which an offline build becomes available.
2. Make a mode-and-feature inventory
Read past the headline and list every function the notice names. At minimum, check campaign, local play, online multiplayer, matchmaking, leaderboards, user-generated content, cloud saves, account functions, downloadable content, virtual currency and in-game stores. Mark each item as retained, removed, or not stated. “Offline modes remain” is not an assurance that every menu, save type or add-on survives.

One-click scans. No signup required.
Also note whether a retained mode loses server-dependent functions. A campaign might load but no longer display online rankings; a local creation tool might work while the sharing browser disappears; and a career mode might open only after a server validates the account. Treat “not stated” as an unanswered question, not as confirmation that the feature works.
Epic Games’ December 14, 2022 announcement used the useful but deliberately qualified wording: “Most titles will be playable offline, while some will no longer be playable.” That sentence applied to the particular games and services in that announcement, not to games in general. Treat broad language the same way: identify the named titles and the specific modes covered.
3. Check how the game starts
Determine whether the first launch needs activation, an account sign-in, a launcher, a periodic authentication check or a currently operating service. Consult both the publisher’s documentation and the platform or storefront’s offline-mode instructions. The shutdown notices do not establish one universal rule for PC digital-rights management, platform account checks or every storefront. Do not infer those requirements from a “single-player” label or from another game made by the same publisher.
For a boxed copy, check whether the disc contains a complete executable or only an installer that downloads required files. For a digital copy, verify that the game is installed and that the platform has recorded the license before going offline. If a launcher has an explicit offline mode, enable it while connected and sign in at least once before testing. A launcher that is merely open without having stored an offline credential is not proof that a later launch will work.
4. Separate local saves from cloud saves
Find out where progress is stored. A local save can remain usable without a network, while a cloud-only save may become inaccessible when the account service retires. If the game offers both, make a local backup using the platform’s supported method before the shutdown date. Do not assume that a save made in an online mode can be opened by an offline mode; the game may store different data or require a server to validate it.
Record which account created the save and whether the platform marks it as synchronized. If a transfer tool is announced, wait for the publisher’s exact instructions rather than copying files blindly. A transfer may cover only selected progress fields, a named edition or a defined date range.
5. Check add-ons, licenses and purchased items
Review each expansion, season pass, soundtrack, cosmetic pack and virtual-currency item separately. Installed content may continue to work if its license is checked locally, but content that depends on a live inventory or account service can disappear. If the publisher promises a conversion or migration, report only the items and save fields explicitly included and the announced schedule.
Bandai Namco’s SYNDUALITY Echo of Ada announcement is a useful example of why this distinction matters. The publisher said an offline-only standalone version was in development after online service ends after May 2027, while some online-dependent functions would be removed. It also said some saved data and designated purchased items were intended to transfer, with details still pending and local-save transfer scheduled for December 2026. Until the final scope and patch are published, do not assume every item or online-earned entitlement will carry over.
6. Test the installed copy safely
When the publisher and platform support it, perform a controlled offline test before the service ends:
- Install the latest available game update and all add-ons while connected.
- Launch once online, sign in if required, and confirm that your local save is visible.
- Close the game completely rather than leaving it suspended.
- Disconnect the console or computer using its supported network setting; do not merely unplug a router if that leaves a cached connection state.
- Start the game, open the campaign or local mode, load the save, and test any installed add-ons you rely on.
- Record the platform, edition, game version, account state and features tested.
If the title has several profiles or editions, repeat the test for the one you actually use. Test a fresh launch after a full shutdown, not only resume-from-suspend, and note any warning that appears. A useful record says exactly which menus opened, which save loaded and which features failed; “it seemed to work” is too vague to guide another owner.
A successful test describes that exact setup at that time. It cannot prove that a future update, license refresh or server-side change will never add an authentication requirement. Conversely, a failed test may reflect an unconfigured launcher or missing update rather than a permanent shutdown dependency, so check the documented offline procedure before drawing a conclusion.
7. Recheck shortly before the cutoff
Look for a final support update before the announced retirement date. Confirm whether downloads, redownloads, account sign-ins, save transfers and offline patches remain available. Keep a copy of important local saves and installation media where the platform permits it. If the title is being removed from sale, download it while the publisher still permits ownership verification, rather than assuming a later redownload will be possible.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow to interpret the language in a shutdown announcement
Publishers use different terms for different events. “Online services ending” can mean matchmaking and leaderboards are removed while a campaign remains. “No longer accessible” or “will not be playable” indicates a stronger dependency. “Development ending” is not the same as a server shutdown: Riot’s 2XKO announcement says active development ends in December 2026, while servers remain online beyond 2026 and offline play is unaffected.
Look for explicit statements about what happens on the effective date, not just what happens to sales. A game can be discontinued for purchase yet remain usable by existing owners, or it can remain listed while a required service is retired. EA notes that offline availability depends on the type of game and the services being retired, so a publisher’s title-by-title explanation is more reliable than a general policy.
Dates can describe different events. NBA 2K Support’s notice for NBA 2K25, published September 3 and updated October 2, 2026, says the game is scheduled to leave sale on October 30, 2026 and be discontinued on December 31, 2026. From January 1, 2027, multiplayer and online modes, including MyCAREER and MyTEAM, are unavailable, while Play Now, MyNBA, The W and MyWNBA remain with server-dependent functions removed. The sale date, service date and mode list therefore need to be read together.
What the documented examples show
| Title or group | Announcement and timing | Offline outcome stated by the publisher |
|---|---|---|
| inFAMOUS 2 and inFAMOUS Festival of Blood | PlayStation service notice about user-created-mission services | Campaigns remain playable; the hosted user-created content service ends |
| GUNS UP! | PlayStation service notice | Will not be playable because the game requires players to be online |
| Gran Turismo Sport | PlayStation service notice | Offline portions remain after online services end |
| Titles covered by Epic’s December 14, 2022 notice | Epic announcement concerning specific listed services and games | Some retain single-player or local-multiplayer play offline; others are shut down and no longer accessible |
| NBA 2K25 | NBA 2K Support notice published September 3 and updated October 2, 2026 | Owners can redownload and play offline modes. From January 1, 2027, multiplayer and online modes, including MyCAREER and MyTEAM, are unavailable. Play Now, MyNBA, The W and MyWNBA remain, with server-dependent functions removed. The game is scheduled to leave sale on October 30, 2026 and be discontinued on December 31, 2026. |
| SYNDUALITY Echo of Ada | Bandai Namco announcement dated September 26, 2026; online service ends after May 2027 | An offline-only standalone version is in development. Some online-dependent functions will be removed; some saved data and designated purchased items are intended to transfer. Transfer details were still pending, with local-save transfer scheduled for December 2026. |
| 2XKO | Riot announcement about development ending in December 2026 | Servers remain online beyond 2026 and offline play is unaffected; this is a development wind-down, not a service retirement. |
These cases are examples, not a prediction rate. Official notices do not provide a representative statistic for how often games remain playable after shutdowns. They do show why a title-by-title answer is necessary: the same publisher ecosystem can contain games that retain campaigns, games that retain only selected portions and games that cannot launch at all.

Console games
Check whether the console has a supported offline mode and whether the game license is tied to the account that purchased it. A disc edition may behave differently from a download because the disc can provide ownership verification, but it still may require a first-run update or server activation. Install and launch the game while the service is live, then follow the console maker’s documented offline procedure.

Do not assume local multiplayer is automatically safe. It may remain available only after the title passes its initial license check, and a local mode can still share menus or profiles with retired online services. Test the exact controller setup and profile you intend to use.
PC games
Identify every component that starts before the game: storefront client, publisher launcher, anti-cheat service and digital-rights check. Confirm whether the game can be launched after the client switches to offline mode and whether the title requires periodic revalidation. The available shutdown notices do not establish a universal rule for any particular PC launcher, so the exact edition’s documentation is necessary.
Check whether the game’s offline mode must be enabled while connected and whether an update can reset that setting. Keep installation files and permitted updates together, but do not assume that an archived installer bypasses a license check.
Remasters, bundles and regional editions
Do not transfer an answer from one release to another. A remaster can replace an online backend, a bundle can contain a different executable, and regional editions can have different licenses or content. Use the product identifier shown in your library or on the disc case when comparing the notice with your copy.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A decision framework for buying or keeping a game
| Evidence you have | Practical risk assessment | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Publisher explicitly lists retained offline modes; launch and local saves work in a disconnected test | Lower risk for those named modes | Archive the installer or disc, updates and local saves; keep the notice and date with your records |
| Offline modes are mentioned, but launch authentication, saves or add-ons are not explained | Moderate uncertainty | Ask support for a title-and-platform-specific answer and test before the cutoff |
| The game is described as requiring online access or becoming inaccessible | High risk; offline play is not expected | Do not buy it solely for future offline use |
| An offline conversion or migration is announced but details are pending | Outcome and retained content are not yet settled | Wait for the transfer scope, patch availability and final instructions |
| Only third-party reports exist and no current official notice is available | Unverified | Treat the game as unknown rather than assuming it will work |
When comparing two games or editions, use the same six axes: exact platform and storefront; whether the base game launches offline; which modes survive; whether saves and add-ons remain accessible; whether an account or recurring check is required; and whether an offline patch, conversion or save migration has been announced. A single “offline compatible” label hides important differences. If one title has explicit retained modes and a tested local save while the other has only a vague promise of offline support, the first has stronger evidence even if both are marketed as single-player.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Confusing “single-player” with “offline.” A single-player mode can still require account validation, cloud data or a live backend.
- Reading only the shutdown date. The date may describe online features, sales, downloads or the entire title. Find the sentence that defines each one.
- Assuming installed DLC is permanent. Verify whether the add-on’s license and content are local or server-controlled.
- Testing while still connected. Cached credentials can hide a required check. Use a clean, documented disconnect test.
- Relying on an old notice. Recheck for revised dates, patches, transfer instructions and territory changes.
- Generalizing from another game. Two titles from the same publisher can use entirely different backends and launch requirements.
- Waiting until after the shutdown to prepare. Install updates, launch once, export or back up local saves, and download permitted content beforehand.
- Confusing development closure with service closure. A team can stop active development while servers and offline play continue, as Riot stated for 2XKO.
- Treating a planned conversion as complete. An announced offline build may still be in development, with transfer scope and dates subject to later instructions.
What to document for a dependable answer
If you are advising someone else—or deciding whether to buy—write down the exact title, platform, edition, storefront, region, game version, account used, date of the test and modes tested. Quote the publisher’s current wording and distinguish confirmed behavior from items marked “not stated.” This record prevents a valid result for one edition or date from being mistaken for a permanent guarantee.
For a comparison, preserve the product identifier, notice URL, publication and update dates, shutdown milestones, screenshots of relevant settings and the result of each offline test. If support replies privately, retain the case number and the exact question asked. Clear records matter because a later patch or revised schedule can change what an earlier test proved.

Does a single-player game always work after servers shut down?
No. A single-player mode may still require launch authentication, cloud data or a live backend. The publisher must identify the retained mode and its requirements.
Can local multiplayer survive when online multiplayer does not?
Often, but not automatically. Local play remains usable only if the title can launch without the retired service and does not route its profiles or session setup through matchmaking.
Will installed DLC remain available?
It may, if the license and content are checked locally. Items tied to an online inventory or account service can be lost or limited, so check each add-on separately.
Is an offline test a permanent guarantee?
No. It documents one platform, edition, account and game version at one time. A later update, license refresh or server-side change can alter the result.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What if the publisher announces an offline conversion?
Wait for the final patch, transfer scope and instructions. The SYNDUALITY Echo of Ada announcement, for example, described a planned standalone version while some functions and transfer details remained unsettled.
Should I buy a physical copy for better offline prospects?
Not as a guarantee. A disc can provide ownership verification, but it may still require an update or online activation. Check the exact edition’s launch requirements before buying.
Bottom line
The dependable answer comes from combining an up-to-date, title-specific shutdown notice with a mode-by-mode dependency check. Confirm launch authentication, local saves, add-ons and storefront requirements, then test the installed copy offline while the service still operates. If the publisher says the game requires online access, or has not explained an announced conversion, treat offline play as unavailable or uncertain rather than relying on its genre or “single-player” label.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a single-player game always work after servers shut down?
No. It may still require launch authentication, cloud data or a live backend. Check the publisher’s statement for the exact title and platform.
Can local multiplayer survive when online multiplayer does not?
Often, but only if the game launches offline and local sessions do not depend on matchmaking or another retired service.
Will installed DLC remain available?
Possibly. Locally licensed content may work, while items tied to an online inventory or account service may be limited or lost.
Is an offline test a permanent guarantee?
No. It records behavior for one edition, account, platform and version at one time; later updates or license changes can alter it.
What should I do when an offline conversion is announced?
Wait for the final patch, transfer scope and instructions. A planned conversion is not proof that every feature or purchase will transfer.
