There is no single “actual” storage number for a virtual machine. Record three separately labeled figures: what the guest filesystem says is used and free, the virtual disk’s configured capacity and provisioning format, and what the host datastore or storage system reports as consumed. A large virtual disk can contain little guest data, while a thick or fixed disk may consume its full capacity on the host.
Start by identifying which storage number you need
The word used changes meaning depending on where you measure it.

| Measurement layer | What it tells you | What it does not tell you |
|---|---|---|
| Guest filesystem | Files occupying space inside Windows, Linux, or another guest, plus the guest’s reported free space. | How many host datastore blocks are allocated. |
| Virtual disk | The capacity presented to the guest and the disk format, such as thin, thick, fixed, dynamic, or differencing. | By itself, the current physical allocation on the datastore. |
| Host or datastore | Space accounted for by the hypervisor or storage layer, within that report’s scope. | Guest free space, or files stored outside the datastore being viewed. |
When reporting a VM, write the layer beside every number—for example, “guest filesystem: 68 GB used,” “virtual disk: 500 GB configured, thin,” and “datastore: 91 GB consumed.”

VMware vSphere and ESXi
VMware thin disks present a configured maximum to the guest but allocate backing blocks as data is written. The backing file can grow toward that maximum. Deleting guest files does not automatically guarantee that previously allocated blocks are returned, and unchecked growth can eventually fill a datastore.

Thick disks reserve their configured amount. Broadcom documents this as expected behavior in ESXi 8.x: a thick, lazy-zeroed or eager-zeroed disk can make datastore consumption equal the disk’s full configured capacity even while the guest reports substantial free space.
Microsoft Hyper-V
Hyper-V fixed VHD and VHDX files allocate their space when created. Dynamic files allocate on demand, so host consumption can increase while the VM runs; Microsoft recommends monitoring the hosting volume when using dynamic VHDX. Differencing disks store changes relative to a parent, so the VM footprint includes the parent and every active differencing file, not just the child’s nominal capacity.

A reliable workflow for measuring a VM
- Name the platform and view. Record whether each value came from inside the guest, the VM’s virtual-disk settings, a hypervisor summary, a datastore browser, or a storage-array dashboard.
- Record guest usage. Capture the guest filesystem’s used and free values, including the drive or mount point and the time measured.
- Inspect every virtual disk. For VMware, note thin or thick provisioning and configured capacity. For Hyper-V, note fixed, dynamic, or differencing format and identify the parent disk for each differencing file.
- Check the VM’s additional files. Include snapshots, redo or differencing disks, suspend files, and VM swap where applicable. Confirm whether they reside on the datastore you are measuring.
- Read the host or datastore figure with its scope. vSphere’s storage-usage API excludes files located on another datastore and warns that disk growth or VM swap can require additional space. A datastore dashboard may therefore show a different total from a per-VM view.
- Report separate figures. Do not add guest-used space to datastore-used space; they are measurements of different layers. Present capacity, allocation, scope, and provisioning mode together.
Why deleting files may not reduce host usage
Removing files inside the guest changes the guest filesystem’s used/free result first. Host reclamation requires an end-to-end trim or UNMAP path: the guest must issue discard notifications, the virtual disk format and controller must pass them through, the hypervisor must support the operation, and the backing storage must honor it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsMicrosoft documents guest UNMAP support for supported Hyper-V paths beginning with Windows Server 2012 and requires VHDX for the VHD-based virtual-disk scenarios described there. These conditions do not mean every deletion immediately reduces a virtual-disk file’s reported size. Verify the guest, controller, disk format, Hyper-V version, and storage backend before claiming that space was reclaimed.

Common measurement traps
Confusing configured capacity with allocated space
A 1 TB thin or dynamic disk can initially consume far less than 1 TB on the host, while a 1 TB thick or fixed disk can consume approximately its full configured amount at creation.
Looking only at the base disk
Snapshots and differencing disks can hold substantial data outside the base disk. Count all related files in the VM’s footprint.

Comparing different scopes
A per-VM figure, a single datastore figure, and a storage-array figure may cover different files or locations. In vSphere, files on another datastore are excluded from the datastore-specific API result.

Assuming free guest space is available to other VMs
Free blocks inside a guest remain inside its virtual disk allocation unless the reclamation path returns them to the host storage pool. Guest free space is not automatically unallocated datastore space.

How to compare two VMs or two storage reports
- Measurement layer: guest filesystem, virtual disk, datastore, or physical array.
- Logical versus physical amount: configured capacity versus currently allocated backing blocks.
- Provisioning mode: thick/fixed, thin/dynamic, and any differencing or snapshot files.
- Scope: one disk or the whole VM; one datastore or all VM files; snapshots and swap included or excluded.
- Reclamation capability: whether trim or UNMAP works through the complete guest-to-storage path.
- Version and backend: hypervisor release, datastore type, controller, and storage system.
A practical reporting template
Use a record such as:
- Guest filesystem: ___ GB used, ___ GB free, mount/drive ___, measured ___.
- Virtual disk: ___ GB configured, format ___ (thin/thick or fixed/dynamic/differencing), parent/snapshot files ___.
- Host or datastore: ___ GB consumed, source view ___, datastore scope ___, swap and snapshots included? ___.
- Reclamation status: trim/UNMAP supported and verified? ___.
This format prevents a logical capacity, guest usage figure, and physical allocation figure from being mistaken for the same quantity.
