A log entry claiming to be from GPTBot, ClaudeBot or another AI crawler is not proof of identity: a client can copy any user-agent string. Treat that name as a clue, then verify the source IP against the crawler operator’s published IP ranges or use the DNS check the operator documents. Keep the bot’s purpose—such as search, training-related crawling or a user-requested fetch—separate from whether its identity checks out.
Why a user-agent does not authenticate a crawler
The user-agent is text supplied with an HTTP request. It can help you find relevant log entries and choose the right verification instructions, but it does not establish who sent the request. Google Search Central warns that the HTTP user-agent used by Googlebot is often spoofed by other crawlers: Google’s Googlebot documentation.

So label a user-agent match as a claim, not a verified bot. Keep the source IP and request context in your logs. If the claimed crawler’s address does not match the operator’s documented verification method, do not treat that request as verified.

A practical workflow for checking crawler claims
- Filter by the claimed name. Search access logs for tokens such as
GPTBot,OAI-SearchBot,ChatGPT-User,ClaudeBot,Claude-SearchBot,Claude-UserorPerplexityBot. Cloudflare’s bot reference maps several names to their operators and categories. A match identifies requests to investigate, not authenticated traffic. - Preserve the source IP and request details. Keep the IP address alongside the user-agent and other useful access-log context. Use the claimed name to find the operator’s instructions, then compare the logged IP with the method that operator documents.
- Check an operator-published IP list when available. Cloudflare describes validating a bot against a public list supplied by the bot owner. Its guidance calls for a fixed, limited, publicly accessible list of addresses dedicated to that owner, used with a matching user-agent pattern: Cloudflare’s verified-bot validation guidance. OpenAI publishes separate IP-list links for GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User in its crawler documentation.
- Use DNS verification only where the operator documents it. Google’s manual check requires a reverse lookup of the logged IP, validation of the returned hostname’s domain, and a forward lookup to confirm it resolves back to the original IP. The accepted suffixes are
googlebot.com,google.comandgoogleusercontent.com. See Google’s verification instructions. - Record identity and purpose separately. A verified request can still represent different activities, and a bot name alone does not establish purpose. Keep distinct classifications for search, training-related crawling and user-directed retrieval where the operator documents them.
- Refresh the verification data before relying on it. Operator IP lists and crawler documentation can change. A stale list can cause you to misclassify legitimate requests; allowing every request with a familiar user-agent can admit spoofed ones.
What the major crawler labels mean
Bot identity and bot function answer different questions. The following distinctions come from the operators’ documentation; they are useful for reports and access policies, but each request still needs to pass the relevant identity check.

How to verify claims from specific operators
When a request claims to be Google and you need to verify it, follow Google’s documented sequence: reverse-resolve the IP, check that the resulting hostname ends with an accepted Google domain suffix, then resolve that hostname forward and confirm the result is the original IP. Google also publishes crawler and fetcher IP ranges for automated matching. The DNS procedure and range links are in Google’s verification guidance.
OpenAI
OpenAI documents separate IP lists for GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User. Use the list associated with the claimed name rather than treating the three as one class of traffic. Their documented purposes also differ: potential training use, ChatGPT search, and a fetch following a user action, respectively. See OpenAI’s crawler overview.

Anthropic
Anthropic distinguishes ClaudeBot, Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User by purpose and says its bots honor robots.txt directives. It cautions that blocking crawler IPs may not reliably or persistently implement an opt-out, because doing so can prevent a crawler from reading robots.txt. For preferences about crawling, consult Anthropic’s site-owner guidance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsChoosing a verification method
- Authority: Prefer an IP list hosted or documented by the crawler operator over a third-party list. Cloudflare’s validation method specifically relies on a list provided by the bot owner.
- Specificity: Check that the list is dedicated to that owner and that the user-agent match is appropriately specific, as described in Cloudflare’s validation guidance.
- Verifiability: For Google’s DNS method, require both the reverse lookup to an accepted hostname suffix and the forward lookup back to the logged IP.
- Purpose: Preserve distinctions among search, training-related crawling and user-directed fetching when the operator documents them. Identity verification does not make these activities interchangeable.
- Freshness: Revisit the operator’s current documentation before applying or keeping an allow/block rule based on its IP data.
Verified identity is not a behavior guarantee
Cloudflare treats identity validation and behavior categories—including search, agent and training—as separate dimensions. Its guidance also says verified bots should behave non-abusively, respect robots.txt and crawl directives, and maintain reasonable request rates. Verification establishes that a request matches an operator’s documented identity method; it does not by itself show that every request is appropriate for your site. Cloudflare’s framework is described in its verified-bot documentation and bot reference.
