How to Teleport in Minecraft: Commands for Java and Bedrock

Use /tp or /teleport to move yourself, players or entities in Minecraft. This Java and Bedrock guide covers coordinates, selectors, relative offsets, rotation, command blocks and fixes for common errors.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The fastest way to teleport in Minecraft is the /tp command, which is an alias for /teleport. To move yourself to a known location, enter /tp @s 100 64 200. The three numbers are the destination’s X, Y and Z coordinates, in that order. To move another player or entity, put its name or selector before the coordinates, as in /tp Alex 100 64 200.

The command works in both Java Edition and Bedrock Edition, but the available arguments and permission setup differ. The examples below label edition-specific forms and explain selectors, relative coordinates, rotation, command blocks and the errors that most often prevent a teleport.

What the teleport command does

Minecraft’s teleport command moves one or more entities to a specific position in the current dimension. /tp and /teleport are interchangeable aliases; the shorter form is convenient in chat, while the full name can be easier to recognize in command blocks and functions.

A destination is always written in X Y Z order:

  • X moves east or west.
  • Y is vertical height.
  • Z moves north or south.

For example, /tp @s 100 64 200 sends the executing entity to X 100, Y 64, Z 200. Replace those values with the coordinates you want. Java accepts decimal coordinates when you need a more exact position; its command documentation notes that whole-number coordinates can center an entity on a block.

Requirements: cheats, permissions and a safe test area

Teleport is a command, not a survival-game ability that is available automatically. You must have permission to use commands.

Single-player and local Bedrock worlds

In a Bedrock world, enable cheats in the world settings before testing. Microsoft documents the Bedrock /teleport command as requiring cheats and assigns it to the Game Directors permission level. Enabling cheats can affect that world’s achievement eligibility, so use a copy of an achievement-focused world if that matters to you.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Java worlds and servers

Java players need a world with commands enabled or operator-level permission on a server. In a temporary Java single-player session, the “Allow Cheats” option can be enabled when creating the world; an existing world can also temporarily open to LAN with cheats enabled. Multiplayer servers may use a permission system, so ask an administrator if the command is rejected even though the syntax is correct.

Choose a safe destination

Coordinates can place you inside a wall, under a ceiling or high above the ground. For a first test, use an open area and a moderate Y value such as 64, then verify the location before attempting a dangerous jump. Bedrock’s optional block-checking argument can refuse an unsafe destination, but it does not replace checking the height and surroundings yourself.

Java Edition command forms

Modern Java Edition accepts these core patterns. Enter them in chat with the leading slash, or omit the slash when a command block or function field already supplies it.

Purpose Command What it does
Teleport yourself to coordinates /tp <x> <y> <z> Moves the command executor to the specified position.
Teleport a target to coordinates /tp <target> <x> <y> <z> Moves the selected player or entity to the position.
Teleport one target to another target /tp <target> <destination-target> Uses an entity or player as the destination.
Move the nearest player upward /tp @p ~ ~8 ~ Adds eight blocks to the nearest player’s current Y coordinate.

When the command has no explicit target, Java treats the command executor as the target. In chat that is normally you; in a command block it is the block’s execution context, which is why selectors are preferable in automated builds.

Useful Java selectors

  • @s selects the entity executing the command.
  • @p selects the nearest player to the execution point.
  • @a selects every player.
  • @e selects every entity, including players, mobs and items.

A selector can be combined with coordinates, so /tp @a 0 80 0 sends all players to the same location. Be cautious with @e: it can move animals, dropped items and other entities you did not intend to affect.

Bedrock Edition command forms

Bedrock’s documented forms use the same basic coordinate order:

Purpose Command Notes
Teleport the executor /teleport <destination: x y z> Moves the command executor.
Teleport a target to coordinates /teleport <victim: target> <destination: x y z> The victim can be a player or entity selector.
Concrete self-teleport /tp @s 100 64 200 Equivalent to the longer command name.
Send all players to the executor /tp @a @s Uses the destination-target form documented for Bedrock.
Move pigs upward /tp @e[type=pig] ~ ~10 ~ Adds 10 to each selected pig’s current Y position.

Bedrock also documents optional rotation, facing and block-checking arguments. Because parser details can change between game versions, use the in-game suggestions that appear after you type the command and label a command block with the Bedrock version in which it was built.

Coordinates: absolute, relative and precise positions

Absolute coordinates

Plain numbers identify one fixed world position. /tp @s 100 64 200 always names X 100, Y 64, Z 200 in the current dimension. If you are building a hub or rescue point, absolute coordinates are easier to document and reuse than a relative offset.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Relative coordinates with tildes

A tilde (~) means “use the current coordinate.” A number after it adds an offset to that coordinate:

  • /tp @s ~ ~10 ~ moves the executor 10 blocks straight upward.
  • /tp @s ~5 ~ ~-5 moves five blocks in positive X and five blocks in negative Z while leaving Y unchanged.
  • /tp @p ~ ~8 ~ raises the nearest player by eight blocks.

A bare tilde is a zero offset, so ~ ~ ~ preserves the current position. Relative coordinates are useful for lifts, short-range nudges and command-block teleporters because the same command works wherever the executor is located.

Where the reference point comes from

The current position is the command’s execution point, not always the position of the person who typed it. In chat, that is normally the player. In a command block, it is the block. In an execute chain, it can be the entity or position established by that chain. This distinction explains why a command such as /tp @s ~ ~10 ~ in a command block moves the block’s executor upward, while a command run directly by a player moves that player.

Decimals and block centering in Java

Use decimal values when you need a position between block coordinates, for example when aligning an entity with the center of a structure. Java’s command reference notes that whole-number coordinates can center an entity on a block; test the exact placement in your version if a redstone mechanism depends on sub-block precision.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Teleporting to another player or entity

Use a player name as the destination

When the destination-target form is accepted, /tp @s Alex teleports the executor to the player named Alex. The name must match the online player’s name exactly. This is usually easier than asking the other player for coordinates, and it keeps working if that player moves before you run the command.

Send a named player to coordinates

To move Alex to a fixed point, use /tp Alex 100 64 200. Replace Alex with the target player’s name or a selector. This requires permission to affect another player; a command that works for yourself can still be blocked when you target someone else.

Use selectors for groups

/tp @a @s sends every player to the executing entity in Bedrock’s documented example. To move only the nearest player, use /tp @p 100 64 200. To move entities of a particular type, Bedrock supports filters such as @e[type=pig]; the same selector idea can be adapted to Java, but filter syntax and available arguments are edition- and version-dependent. If a selector matches more entities than expected, test it with one target first.

Rotation, facing and block checking in Bedrock

Bedrock’s teleport reference adds optional orientation controls after the destination coordinates. A command such as /teleport @s 100 64 200 0 45 supplies yaw and pitch values so the player arrives facing a chosen direction. Use these arguments when a player must look toward a landmark, a doorway or a minigame start line.

Bedrock can also make the teleported entity face a coordinate or another entity. This is useful for guided tours and scripted scenes: the destination stays fixed while the player’s view is aimed at the next point of interest. Type the command and follow the in-game argument suggestions, because the exact order depends on whether you choose a rotation, a coordinate to face or an entity to face.

The Boolean checkForBlocks argument asks Bedrock to verify that the destination is not occupied. For example, /teleport @s 100 64 200 true requests block checking in the documented form. If the destination fails that check, the teleport can be stopped instead of placing the entity in obstructing blocks. A false value (or omitting the option) does not make a hazardous destination safe; inspect the area and choose an appropriate Y coordinate as well.

Using teleport in command blocks

The same teleport forms can be entered in a command block. This lets you build pressure-plate teleporters, repeating elevators and function-driven travel systems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Obtain and place a command block in a location where you have permission to use it.
  2. Open its interface and enter a tested command, such as tp @s ~ ~10 ~ for a relative lift or tp @p 100 64 200 for a fixed destination.
  3. Choose the activation mode: impulse for a one-time action, repeating for a continuously evaluated action, or chain to run after another block.
  4. Connect the block to the intended trigger, such as a button, pressure plate, redstone circuit or preceding command block.
  5. Test with one player or a narrowly filtered selector before enabling a repeating circuit.

In command blocks, explicitly selecting the intended target prevents accidental self-targeting. Relative coordinates are especially powerful here: a block can move the entity that triggered a system by an offset instead of sending every user to one global location. Repeating teleports can trap players in loops, so include a clear trigger condition or use an impulse block for a single transfer.

Java and Bedrock: what differs

Area Java Edition Bedrock Edition
Basic aliases /tp and /teleport. /tp and /teleport.
Core coordinate order X, Y, Z. X, Y, Z.
Relative coordinates Tilde offsets are calculated from the command execution position. Tilde offsets are likewise relative to the execution context.
Targeting @s, @p, @a and @e are common selectors. The same selectors are common, with filter and parser details that can vary by version.
Rotation and facing Use the syntax supported by your Java version; do not copy Bedrock-only trailing arguments blindly. Documented optional yaw, pitch, facing and checkForBlocks arguments are available.
Permission setup Commands must be enabled and you need operator or equivalent server permission. Cheats must be enabled and the command requires the documented Game Directors permission level.

The safest practice is to identify the edition before copying a command that has optional arguments. The basic three-coordinate and target-to-target forms are the most portable; rotation, facing and block checking need edition-appropriate syntax.

Why a teleport command fails

“Unknown command” or permission denied

Check that cheats or commands are enabled and that your account has the required server permission. In Bedrock, verify the world has cheats enabled. On a Java server, ask an administrator to grant the appropriate operator or command permission.

Syntax error or incomplete command

Confirm the argument order: target first when you are moving someone else, followed by all three destination coordinates. A self-teleport can be written as /tp @s 100 64 200; omitting one coordinate leaves the command incomplete. If you copied rotation or facing arguments, make sure the command is for your edition and version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The wrong player or entity moved

Inspect the selector. @p means nearest player to the execution point, not necessarily the person who typed the command. @a includes every player, and @e includes non-player entities. Replace a broad selector with a player name or @s while testing.

The command succeeds but the destination is dangerous

Use an open area and a safe Y coordinate. If you arrive inside terrain, issue a second teleport to a known clear location. If you fall after arriving, raise the Y value and test again. Bedrock’s checkForBlocks option can reject an occupied destination, but it cannot predict every hazard such as lava below an otherwise clear block.

Relative movement starts from an unexpected place

Remember that tildes use the execution context. A command block, function or execute chain may establish a different reference point from your player. Run the command directly in chat to compare results, or make the execution entity explicit in the surrounding command logic.

Finding the right coordinates

Use the game’s coordinate display or in-chat tab completion where available. The official Minecraft commands guidance notes that tab completion can fill coordinates for commands that require them. Autocomplete also helps reveal the argument order supported by your installed edition and version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
