How to Target Intune Assignments by Operating System Version

Target Intune assignments by OS version using the current operatingSystemVersion filter property, the right managed-device or managed-app filter, and a supported comparison operator.

To target an Intune app, policy, or profile by operating system version, create an assignment filter for managed devices or managed apps, build a rule with operatingSystemVersion, then apply that filter to the assignment in include or exclude mode. Use this current property rather than the deprecated osVersion, and confirm that filters are supported for the specific workload and assignment type.

What an OS version assignment filter does

An assignment filter narrows an existing group assignment using properties reported by devices or managed apps. It does not assign an app or policy by itself, and it does not change a device’s OS. Create the filter, then attach it to the relevant assignment and choose whether matching items are included or excluded. Microsoft explains the workflow in its assignment filter documentation.

Choose the right filter type and check support

Intune distinguishes between managed-device and managed-app filters. Choose the type that matches the target scenario: app protection policy targeting, for example, uses managed-app filters. Filter availability also varies by workload and assignment type, so check Microsoft’s supported workloads matrix before relying on a filter. The matrix documents, among other limits, a restriction for Available app assignments to Android Enterprise personally owned work-profile devices.

Device platform restrictions can also use filters, but enrollment restrictions are a separate feature from filtering an ordinary app, compliance policy, or configuration profile assignment. See Microsoft’s device platform restrictions guide for that enrollment-specific workflow.

Create the version rule

  1. In the Microsoft Intune admin center, open the assignment-filter creation workflow and choose the appropriate filter type and platform. Microsoft documents the workflow in Create assignment filters in Microsoft Intune. Navigation labels can change, so follow the current admin-center interface if it differs.

  2. Enter a descriptive name and, if useful, a description. A name such as iOS major version 18 makes the platform and intended cohort visible to other administrators.

  3. Under Rules, use the rule builder or syntax editor. Select operatingSystemVersion, choose a comparison operator, and enter the version value. The builder can combine conditions with and or or; use combined logic only when each condition is needed.

  4. Review the rule and create the filter. Where preview is available, use it to check the matching cohort before applying the filter broadly.

  5. Open the app, policy, or profile assignment, select the filter, and choose include or exclude mode according to your rollout plan. Keep the group assignment and filter logic aligned.

Choose an operator that matches your boundary

Microsoft’s assignment filter properties and operators reference lists these comparison operators for operatingSystemVersion: -eq, -ne, -gt, -ge, -lt, and -le.

  • Use -eq for an exact version, as in (device.operatingSystemVersion -eq 14.2.1).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Use -gt or -ge for versions above or at least a threshold. Microsoft’s syntax example for a build above a threshold is (device.operatingSystemVersion -gt 10.0.22000.1000).

  • Use -lt or -le for versions below or at most a boundary. Microsoft’s example is (device.operatingSystemVersion -le 10.0.22631.3235).

  • Use -ne when the intended cohort is every version except the exact value specified.

These examples illustrate rule syntax; they are not current recommended OS baselines. Match the value to the version reported for the platform. Do not assume a partial version string or an informal range expression behaves like an ordered version comparison; use the documented syntax and platform behavior.

Account for platform-specific version formatting

For Apple devices, Microsoft’s property reference says operatingSystemVersion does not include the Security Patch Version suffix letter. Leave that suffix out of the filter expression. More generally, validate the version format reported for the platform rather than copying a display label that may contain extra text.

Use managed-app filters for app protection policy cohorts

Microsoft documents a scenario in which administrators target different app protection policies to different major OS-version cohorts. Create a managed-app filter for each cohort, create the app protection policy with its conditional-launch minimum-version requirement, then apply the matching filter on the policy’s Assignments page. In Microsoft’s example, a filter selects a major release such as iOS 18 while the conditional-launch setting sets a more specific minimum such as 18.2.1.

The filter selects which cohort receives the policy; the conditional-launch setting defines the policy’s minimum-version requirement. This example does not establish identical filter behavior for every app protection assignment, so check the supported-workloads matrix for the platform and assignment type you use.

Use operatingSystemVersion for new filters

Microsoft marks osVersion as deprecated and directs administrators to use operatingSystemVersion for new rules. Existing filters that use osVersion continue to work, but Microsoft says the deprecated property cannot be used to create new filters. The current property’s general-availability status is noted in Microsoft’s Intune release information.
