Listen before offering advice. Then talk about how online images are often selected, posed, filtered, or edited, and agree on practical phone habits together. Keep the conversation open and revisit it as your child grows.
Start by asking about their experience
Choose a calm moment rather than beginning with a confrontation about screen time or a particular post. Short, recurring conversations make it easier for a child to bring up something difficult later. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) encourages parents to ask about a young person’s experience and make decisions together.

Try one question at a time, and give your child room to answer:
- “What do you like doing on your phone?”
- “Who do you usually talk to or follow?”
- “How do you feel after you’ve been on that app?”
- “Have you seen anything that made you uncomfortable?”
- “Does anything you see make you feel pressured about how you look?”
- “What would help you feel rested?”
Listen without immediately correcting, checking, or taking the phone away. If your child shares something embarrassing or worrying, make clear that you want to understand and help—not blame them.

Talk about images without making their body the problem
Explain that a social media post is not necessarily an unfiltered record of ordinary life. People may choose a flattering angle, pose, lighting, or filter; images can also be edited. Ask questions that help your child examine what they see: “Do you think this image shows the whole story?” or “What might have been carefully chosen or changed?”
The American Psychological Association’s 2023 advisory says research links appearance-based comparison and intense attention to one’s own photos and feedback with poorer body image, disordered eating, and depressive symptoms, particularly among girls. That is a reason to talk about your child’s experience and help them assess content—not proof that every child is harmed or that social media alone causes a particular outcome.

Agree on practical details such as:
- When phones are put away, especially around bedtime and sleep.
- Which parts of the day or activities need uninterrupted attention.
- How to handle privacy settings, unwanted content, ads, and influencer marketing.
- When parental controls are appropriate and how you will explain their use.
- Which offline activities and relationships the family wants to protect.
Invite your child to help shape the rules, explain the reasons for them, and revisit the agreement when circumstances change. Make the plan apply to adults too: parents can model putting phones away during shared time and acknowledge that they also get pulled into scrolling. The AAP’s 5 Cs of Media Use offers additional guidance for thinking about a child’s media habits in context.

If your child reports harassment or inappropriate contact from an adult, respond calmly and without blame. Listen, offer support, and discuss the platform’s reporting options. Preserve relevant information if appropriate, and involve healthcare or safeguarding support when needed. The U.S. Surgeon General’s advisory recommends a supportive, nonjudgmental response and discussing reporting options.
Put social media statistics in perspective
An AAP summary of research reported that, in 2022, 38% of children ages 8–12 used social media. It also reported that 35% of teens ages 13–17 used selected services “almost constantly”; the examples named were YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, and Snapchat. These are reported population figures from 2022, not current 2026 estimates, and they do not predict an individual child’s risk or show that social media caused a particular effect.
