Use a regular WebDriver screenshot for the current browser context, an element screenshot for a cropped SVG or its container, and a browser-specific full-page method if you need the entire scrollable document.
Choose the screenshot scope
- Current browser context: use
driver.save_screenshot()to capture what the browser currently displays. Selenium saves this screenshot as PNG. Selenium’s Python WebDriver API documents the screenshot methods. - One SVG or its container: locate the relevant element and call its
screenshot()method. This saves a cropped element image; see the Selenium browser-window guide for element screenshot examples. - Whole scrollable document: do not assume an ordinary screenshot includes content beyond the current browser view. Selenium’s Firefox Python API documents full-page methods such as
save_full_page_screenshot(); confirm that the method is supported by your browser and language binding. Firefox WebDriver API documentation.
The exact crop and dimensions depend on the capture method and page. Inspect the resulting PNG rather than assuming every browser handles every SVG layout identically.

Capture an SVG and the page with Python
This example saves the first inline SVG as svg.png, followed by a screenshot of the current browser context as page.png. Replace the URL and selector with the ones for your page.

Selenium’s get() waits for the page’s onload event, but an application can still insert or draw a chart afterward. The Python WebDriver API describes navigation behavior; wait for the page-specific condition that means your SVG is actually ready.

Save a screenshot of only the SVG
Use svg.screenshot("svg.png") when the SVG itself is the desired output. If the graphic is nested inside a chart panel or another element and you want that surrounding context too, locate and screenshot the container instead. Selenium’s element screenshot support is shown in its browser-window guide.
Save the current browser context
Use driver.save_screenshot("page.png") when you want the browser’s current screenshot rather than a single cropped element. For another file API, driver.get_screenshot_as_file(path) also writes PNG and returns False if an I/O error occurs, according to the Python WebDriver API.

Capture the full document
Full-document capture is distinct from capturing the current browser context. The cited full-page method is documented for Selenium’s Firefox Python binding; check support for the particular browser and binding you use before relying on it. Firefox WebDriver API documentation.

A chart may be created or updated asynchronously after the browser fires onload. If Selenium searches too early, the SVG may not exist yet; if it captures too early, it may be blank or incomplete. Replace the example’s immediate lookup with an explicit wait for an application-specific signal—for example, the chart container becoming visible or a page attribute changing to a ready state. The exact condition depends on the site; a generic delay cannot guarantee that a chart has finished drawing.

Troubleshoot blank, clipped, or unexpected SVG output
- No SVG element found: confirm the selector matches the page’s actual markup, then wait for the application to create the graphic before locating it.
- SVG screenshot is blank or incomplete: check whether the chart is still rendering when capture begins. Wait for a page-specific ready condition and inspect the image again. The documented sources do not establish one universal SVG-specific repair.
- Screenshot is cropped unexpectedly: confirm whether you used an element screenshot or a browser-context screenshot. An element capture targets that element, while full-document capture requires a separate supported method.
- File is missing or empty: check the output path and whether the process can write there. If using
get_screenshot_as_file(), check its Boolean return value for an I/O failure. - Only part of a long page appears: use a full-page capture method supported by your browser and binding rather than treating an ordinary current-context screenshot as a full-document image.
