To take paid orders online, you need more than a published website: visitors must be able to understand an offer, choose or configure it, provide the required details, and complete a working checkout. Start with a store builder if you are creating a site from scratch; if you already have a website, you can add a buying flow without rebuilding the whole front end.
Choose the route that fits your starting point
The practical choice depends on whether you are building a new site, adding sales to an existing site, or creating a custom front end. No single route is established as cheapest or as producing better sales results; compare the work and features you need, and check payment availability for your business location.

Building a new site and store together
A bundled builder gives you a site and store workflow in one place. For example, Wix outlines a sequence of building the store, adding products, setting store details, configuring payments and shipping, publishing with a domain, and promoting the business. Its documentation also describes products, subscriptions, services, and bookings as possible ways to sell. Check which features are available in your market and plan before choosing a setup: Wix’s online-store setup guide.

Adding sales to an existing website
A Shopify Buy Button can put product purchasing on a webpage or blog while the product is managed in Shopify. Shopify documents three possible actions for the button: add a product to a cart, go directly to checkout, or open product details. The product needs to exist in Shopify Admin and be available to the Buy Button sales channel. See Shopify’s Buy Button documentation.

Using a custom storefront
A custom storefront separates the presentation layer from the commerce backend: your custom front end connects to Shopify, and Shopify Checkout can still handle orders. This approach allows a more tailored front end, but it introduces development and integration work. Shopify describes the model in its headless storefront documentation.
Prepare the offer and store details
Before configuring checkout, make sure a buyer can understand exactly what is being sold and what happens after payment. The details depend on whether you sell physical products, digital products, services, subscriptions, or bookings.
- Offer: Add clear names and descriptions, images where useful, and any options or variants a buyer must select.
- Price and terms: Show the price and explain relevant purchase terms, such as what is included, billing frequency for a subscription, or how a service is delivered.
- Fulfilment: Set shipping or delivery details for physical goods, or explain how customers receive a digital product or access a service.
- Store information: Configure the business and store details your platform requires, along with relevant customer-facing policies.
- Payment: Configure at least one payment method that is available for your business location. Wix says configured methods appear at checkout; provider availability varies by location. See Wix’s payment-method setup instructions.
Decide how buyers should reach checkout
Two separate decisions shape the buying flow: whether checkout is hosted by a provider or embedded in your site, and whether the buyer goes through a cart or directly to checkout. The right arrangement depends on your products, existing site, and implementation needs.

Hosted checkout or embedded form
With a hosted checkout page, a button sends the buyer to a payment page operated by the provider. An embedded payment form keeps the payment interface within your site. Stripe documents both patterns; the distinction affects where the payment step appears and how much custom integration is involved. Review Stripe’s Checkout documentation for the available integration approaches.

Cart first or direct to checkout
A cart-first flow lets customers collect one or more products before paying. A direct-to-checkout flow skips that cart step for the selected offer, which may suit a single product or a focused purchase path. Shopify’s Buy Button supports both add-to-cart and direct-to-checkout actions. Shopify also documents accelerated checkout buttons that can take a buyer from a product page directly to checkout; which option appears depends on payment settings and factors such as the buyer’s browser and device. See Shopify’s accelerated checkout documentation.

Follow the sequence for your platform, but treat checkout as part of the store setup rather than an optional finishing touch. A payment method must be configured before a customer can complete a paid order; also make sure the order can be fulfilled on the terms shown to the buyer.
- Create the site or store. Choose the new-site builder, add-on buying flow, or custom storefront route that matches your setup.
- Add products or services. Enter the offer details, prices, options, and any required customer selections. For a Shopify Buy Button, confirm that the product is available to that channel.
- Set store and fulfilment details. Configure the business information, shipping or delivery rules, and relevant policies.
- Connect a payment method. Select an available provider for your location and complete its required setup. Availability can vary by market.
- Choose the checkout path. Decide whether a buyer adds items to a cart or proceeds directly to checkout, and whether the payment page is hosted or embedded.
- Publish with the intended domain and review the live path. Verify the site visitors will use, not just the editor preview.
Test the buyer journey before launch
Preview the site on desktop and mobile, then click through the product page, cart where applicable, and checkout. Wix recommends this kind of pre-publishing review in its online-store guide. Check each point below using your actual platform and settings:
