To capture a dynamic website accurately, first bring it to the state you want to show, wait for that state to appear, and then take a viewport, full-page, or element screenshot. A full-page setting captures the scrollable page; it does not guarantee that content triggered by scrolling, clicks, or other interactions has loaded.
Choose what the screenshot needs to show
Decide whether you need the current viewport, the entire scrollable page, or one element such as a chart or header. If the content depends on a tab, accordion, menu, hover, or click, reproduce that state before capturing.

- Viewport: captures what is visible now.
- Full page: captures the document’s full scrollable extent. Playwright describes this as a full scrollable page, as if it fit on a very tall screen.
- Element: captures a selected part of the page, useful when the rest of the document is irrelevant.
For a one-off image, a browser’s built-in screenshot or developer tools may be enough. Menu names and availability vary by browser and version, so check the browser’s current instructions rather than relying on a remembered shortcut.
Use Playwright for repeatable screenshots
In a JavaScript project already using Playwright, navigate to the page, wait for a meaningful readiness condition, and then capture it. Install and configure Playwright according to its official screenshots guide.
#1 Best Overall
await page.goto('https://example.com');
await page.locator('main').waitFor();
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });
Replace main with a selector or condition that actually indicates the content you need is ready. The example only waits for that locator; it does not prove that every script, image, or later client-side update has finished.
Capture only an element
await page.locator('.header').screenshot({ path: 'header.png' });
Use a selector that matches the intended element on the target page. Playwright also supports full-page screenshots with fullPage: true.

Make changing pages easier to compare
Playwright’s screenshot API accepts a stylesheet through its style option. You can use it to hide or alter elements such as a live clock or animation when the goal is a stable visual comparison. This changes the captured appearance, so avoid it when the screenshot must represent the page exactly as a visitor sees it. See the Playwright Page API for the current option details.
Use Puppeteer for repeatable screenshots
Puppeteer offers page and element screenshots. Its documented example waits for networkidle2 before capturing:
Rank #3
await page.goto('https://news.ycombinator.com', {
waitUntil: 'networkidle2',
});
await page.screenshot({ path: 'hn.png' });
networkidle2 is an example wait condition, not a universal signal that a dynamic page is finished. Sites with ongoing requests or later client-side changes may still need a targeted selector wait or a deliberate interaction before capture. Refer to the Puppeteer screenshots guide.
Capture an element or region
Puppeteer supports element screenshots; its documentation notes that a hidden element is scrolled into view before the screenshot. Screenshot options also include full-page capture, clipping, image type, quality, and omitting the background. Check the current ScreenshotOptions API for supported details and types.

Load content that appears only after scrolling or interaction
Lazy images and scroll-triggered sections may not be ready just because a screenshot requests the full page. Scroll through the relevant parts of the document, pause for expected content to appear, and inspect the output. This is a practical workflow, not a guarantee that every site loads content in response to scrolling.

- Navigate to the page and wait for an initial, page-specific readiness condition.
- Perform the required interaction: click the relevant tab, open the accordion, hover a menu, or scroll through the page in steps.
- After each action, wait for the expected content or state, rather than assuming the action completed instantly.
- Capture the viewport, full page, or target element only after the desired state is visible.
- Inspect the image for missing sections, unloaded images, overlays, or unexpected layout changes.

Troubleshoot missing or inconsistent output
- Content appears only after scrolling: scroll through the relevant page area in steps, allow time for the content to load, and verify the resulting image.
- A tab, menu, or accordion is missing: perform the interaction that reveals it, then wait for the intended content before capturing.
- The page seems unfinished after a network-idle wait: use a page-specific condition. A network-idle signal does not necessarily account for continuing requests or client-side changes.
- Images or sections are missing from a full-page image: do not assume full-page capture forced every lazy-loaded asset to load; scroll through the page and check again.
- Repeated images differ because of animations or timestamps: consider a Playwright screenshot stylesheet to stabilize those elements, while noting that this alters the captured page.
- The screenshot is larger than needed: capture a specific element or use Puppeteer’s documented clipping option.
- The expected selector never appears: confirm that the selector matches the page and that the relevant interaction or navigation actually occurred before waiting for it.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A GET request takes a URL and returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. It can accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of these steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
For example, save a WebP screenshot of Stripe with cURL:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Replace YOUR_API_KEY with your key. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for setup and supported parameters. ScreenshotNeo offers 1,000 shots per month free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Sign up for free and try 1,000 screenshots a month with no card.
