To make Selenium screenshots more comparable across operating systems, keep the browser and test environment controlled, set an explicit window size, verify the resulting viewport, and capture only after the page is visually stable. These steps improve repeatability; they do not guarantee pixel-identical rendering on Windows, macOS, and Linux.
Why screenshots differ between machines
A screenshot baseline can fail even when the page appears functionally correct. Screen resolution can affect rendering, and hosts may differ in browser or driver versions, fonts, locale, color settings, device scale factor, and application state. These are variables to control and record, not causes with a universally measured impact.
Selenium provides browser-control and screenshot APIs, but a consistent WebDriver command does not make operating-system rendering identical. The WebDriver overview describes WebDriver as a W3C Recommendation (Selenium WebDriver). A separate W3C WebDriver document dated 2026-07-02 is a Working Draft, explicitly work in progress (W3C WebDriver).
Standardize the browser session and viewport
Choose and record the browser setup
Use the browser family and version your test is meant to cover. Keep browser and driver versions consistent between baseline creation and later runs, and save those versions with the screenshot artifacts. If you test multiple supported operating systems, treat each OS/browser combination as its own target rather than assuming one baseline represents them all.

Set a fixed window size, then check the viewport
Do not maximize the browser as a substitute for a fixed size: maximize fills the available screen space, which can vary between developer machines and build agents. Selenium documents window sizing and notes that screen resolution can affect rendering (Working with windows and tabs).

Set the desired dimensions explicitly, then inspect the browser’s actual inner viewport. Requested window dimensions and CSS viewport dimensions are not necessarily the same. If using Chrome headless, Chrome’s documented screenshot examples show specifying dimensions with --window-size; confirm the behavior in the exact browser environment you run (Headless Chrome).
Control other test inputs
For repeatable comparisons, keep the OS image, browser and driver, installed fonts, locale, timezone, browser preferences, color profile, device scale factor, and test data fixed where possible. Record their values with each capture. Selenium’s APIs establish browser session and window controls; they do not quantify how much each of these variables affects pixel differences.

Capture a stable, appropriately scoped image
Wait for visual readiness
Capture after the application has reached a meaningful ready state: its relevant data is loaded, fonts and images are ready, animations have settled, and asynchronous content has completed. Prefer an application-specific readiness condition or Selenium wait over relying only on an arbitrary sleep. A delay cannot ensure readiness if network or application timing varies.
Use the right screenshot scope
WebDriver can save a screenshot of the current browsing context, and Selenium also documents element screenshots. A current-window capture is a viewport capture; do not assume it captures a full document identically across drivers. Use an element screenshot when the comparison should cover one target element. The WebDriver screenshot command is defined in the protocol, but that does not promise uniform full-page behavior across implementations (W3C WebDriver screenshot commands).

Python example
This example sets a fixed browser window before navigation and saves the current window as a PNG. Replace the URL and dimensions with your test’s values, then validate the actual viewport in your target environment.
from selenium import webdriver
options = webdriver.ChromeOptions()
# For a headless run, configure the mode supported by your installed Chrome version.
driver = webdriver.Chrome(options=options)
try:
driver.set_window_size(1440, 1000)
driver.get("https://example.com")
# Add an explicit wait for your application's real ready condition here.
driver.save_screenshot("capture.png")
finally:
driver.quit()
Selenium’s Python API documents saving the current window as a PNG and its window-management controls (Selenium window and tab interactions).

Validate baselines across supported platforms
- Create the baseline using the pinned browser setup and fixed window size for a specific OS/browser target.
- Record capture metadata, including OS image, browser and driver versions, requested window dimensions, actual viewport dimensions, device scale factor, locale, timezone, fonts, and relevant application state.
- Run the same test on every OS/browser combination your product supports, with the same controlled inputs wherever possible.
- Compare with an explicit tolerance appropriate to the test. If exact pixel parity is a requirement, define and test that requirement; Selenium itself does not enforce it.
- Retain the artifacts and metadata for failures so that a mismatch can be reproduced on the same environment.
Troubleshooting inconsistent captures
- Image dimensions differ: confirm the requested window size and inspect the actual inner viewport on each host. Do not infer viewport size from the outer window dimensions.
- Layout differs despite matching dimensions: compare browser and driver versions, OS image, fonts, locale, timezone, color settings, device scale factor, and application data. Change one variable at a time to isolate the difference.
- Content is missing or still moving: wait for the application’s ready state and for relevant images, fonts, animations, and asynchronous content before capturing.
- A full-page baseline behaves differently: establish whether the test is using a viewport screenshot or a driver-specific full-page capture. The standard current-window screenshot is not a cross-driver promise of identical whole-document capture.
- Local and CI results disagree: compare the recorded browser, driver, OS image, viewport, and session settings, then reproduce on the same OS/browser target before updating a baseline.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a clean website capture without managing a Selenium browser session, ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request can return an image or PDF. For example, using the documented cURL pattern (ScreenshotNeo documentation):
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides screenshot tools for AI agents, including Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does setting the same Selenium window size guarantee identical screenshots on Windows, macOS, and Linux?
No. It improves repeatability, but operating-system and browser rendering differences can remain. Validate each supported OS/browser combination.
Should I maximize the browser before taking a baseline?
No. The available screen space can differ by host. Set a deliberate size and verify the actual viewport instead.
