Better drone photos start with a deliberate viewpoint, not simply flying higher. Choose a clear subject and background, compose around the ground’s shapes and lines, then set exposure for the motion you want. Check your drone’s camera features and plan the flight so photography never compromises safe piloting.
Choose a viewpoint that suits the subject
Before changing altitude, decide what the photograph should show. A straight-down view can make patterns, boundaries, and symmetry the subject; a lower or oblique angle can reveal depth and layers. If you include the horizon, consider how foreground, middle distance, and background work together. These are useful composition options, not fixed rules for every scene.

Look for a clean background and check the frame edges for distracting objects. Roads, rivers, shorelines, fences, and field boundaries can lead the viewer’s eye toward the subject. A small change in position or height may separate the subject from its background or make a shape easier to read. Capture a few considered viewpoints rather than climbing without a visual reason. DJI’s aerial composition guide discusses symmetry, leading lines, and layered framing in a videography context; these principles can also inform still photographs.

Set exposure for the motion you want
There is no single best shutter speed or ISO for every drone, scene, and subject. Start with the way you want motion to appear, then balance exposure using the controls your camera actually provides.

Shutter speed
A faster shutter can help render a moving subject sharply, but it lets in less light. A slower shutter brightens the image and can intentionally blur motion, but movement by the subject or aircraft may soften details. For long exposures in daylight, consider whether the aircraft can remain sufficiently steady and whether blur is part of the intended effect.
ISO and aperture
Keep ISO as low as the scene allows: raising it amplifies exposure but can make image noise more visible. Some drone cameras have fixed apertures; others allow adjustment. Do not assume that a setting or exposure strategy for one model applies to another. DJI’s Air 3S specifications list different apertures for its wide and medium-tele cameras, while the Mavic 3 Pro specifications describe three cameras with different focal lengths and aperture capabilities.

Check exposure in the camera view
Review the live view and, when practical, the captured image for blown highlights and lost shadow detail. Bright sky or dark ground can mislead automatic exposure; use exposure compensation or manual controls if your drone offers them. Exposure lock and metering options also vary by model. DJI’s camera documentation describes metering, exposure compensation, and exposure lock, but your aircraft’s manual is the guide to its specific controls and interface.

Use RAW/DNG when you plan to edit and your drone supports it. RAW gives more scope for later adjustments than a camera-processed JPEG, but it is not automatically a better-looking photo: it needs compatible editing software and uses storage. Confirm the supported formats for the particular camera you select. DJI lists JPEG and DNG RAW options for the Air 3S and photo-format options by camera for the Mavic 3 Pro on their respective specifications pages.

Exposure bracketing, often labelled AEB, makes a series of frames at different exposure values. It can help when a scene has a large brightness range and one exposure may not retain the detail you want. You will need to inspect the results and decide whether blending is worthwhile; multiple frames use more storage, and a moving subject may shift between exposures. AEB is not available on every drone or camera. DJI lists AEB modes for the Air 3S and bracketing information by camera for the Mavic 3 Pro on their specifications pages.
Use an ND filter only when its effect helps
A neutral-density (ND) filter reduces the light reaching the lens. In bright conditions, it can let you use a slower shutter for a deliberate motion effect, such as smoothing moving water. The needed strength depends on the available light, camera, shutter goal, and aperture range; DJI explains this exposure use in its ND filter guidance.

An ND filter is not required for ordinary sharp daytime stills. If you want to freeze a moving subject, a faster shutter may be more appropriate. Check that any filter fits the exact drone model and camera before buying or fitting it.

Plan the flight around safe piloting
Framing a photograph can draw attention away from the aircraft and its surroundings. Check the location and applicable rules before takeoff, keep the aircraft within visual line of sight where required, and do not let screen use or a desired composition compromise awareness or a safe flight path. DJI’s FlySafe guidance advises following local rules, using open areas, keeping the aircraft in visual line of sight, avoiding flight over people, animals, and moving vehicles, and checking the aircraft before flight.

Rules depend on where and how you fly. In the United States, the FAA distinguishes recreational flying from operations under Part 107; the applicable framework depends on the operation, not simply on having a camera. Review the FAA’s Part 107 overview and recreational flyer guidance for current requirements, including visual-line-of-sight rules, yielding to manned aircraft, controlled-airspace authorization when required, and restrictions on flight over people. Check current local rules and airspace resources for your planned location. If getting the shot would interfere with safe piloting, skip it.
