Set the schedule’s timezone explicitly, choose a page-readiness condition that suits the site, and save each capture under a date-based filename so runs do not overwrite one another.
What you need to set up
- Node.js 22.12 or later, as specified by the current Puppeteer system requirements, plus an operating system and browser environment Puppeteer supports. Check the Puppeteer system requirements for supported Chrome for Testing platforms, architectures, and Linux dependencies.
- A Puppeteer script that opens the target URL, waits for the page, captures an image, and closes the browser.
- A scheduler that remains available at the intended time. Choose a timezone and decide whether the filename should use UTC or local dates.
The Puppeteer documentation describes the capture method as Page.screenshot() in its Screenshots guide. Scheduling is a separate responsibility.

Build a daily screenshot script
The following ES module is a runnable starting point. It creates the output directory, uses a date-based UTC filename, sets a stable viewport, waits for navigation, captures the full page, and closes the browser even if navigation or capture fails.

The example is an implementation pattern, not a claim that it has been tested against your site or scheduler. Puppeteer’s screenshot documentation covers Page.screenshot() and its options; its getting-started guide demonstrates viewport setup and navigation.
Choose a readiness condition, not just a timeout
networkidle2 is a documented navigation wait option, but navigation completion does not guarantee that the page has reached the visual state you want. Long polling, delayed images, animations, or client-side updates can change the result. If the important content appears after navigation, wait for a site-specific selector or perform another explicit readiness check before calling screenshot(). Conversely, a page that never becomes network-idle may need a different wait strategy.
Choose the image scope and dimensions
The example uses a 1440 × 900 viewport and fullPage: true. Set the viewport consistently if you plan to compare images over time. Set fullPage: false for a viewport-sized capture; Puppeteer’s fullPage option defaults to false. The documented default image type is PNG. Screenshot options also include clip for a specified region, path for the output file, and type for image format selection. Consult the ScreenshotOptions API reference for the current supported values and constraints.

Make the date convention intentional
toISOString() labels the file with the UTC date. If the job runs near midnight, that may differ from the local calendar date you have in mind. For local-date filenames, format the date in the same IANA timezone used by the schedule. Keep the timezone choice explicit in both the scheduler and your file-naming logic, particularly when daylight-saving time applies.

Schedule the script to run daily
For a one-shot daily run, an operating-system scheduler or hosted workflow is often easier to operate than keeping a Node process alive. Compare options by persistence after restarts, timezone and daylight-saving rules, start-time guarantees, logs and retry support, and whether the machine supports Puppeteer’s browser and operating-system dependencies.

These are operating-model distinctions, not a hands-on reliability or punctuality comparison. Do not assume a scheduled job starts at an exact second unless the platform documents that guarantee. Record run times and failures so you can see when a capture actually occurred.
Example: GitHub Actions workflow
Create .github/workflows/daily-screenshot.yml and add a workflow that installs Node.js and Puppeteer, then runs the script. This example schedules 09:00 UTC each day; replace the URL secret and adjust the cron expression and timezone for your requirement.

GitHub’s schedule documentation describes timezone configuration, the five-minute minimum interval, and behavior when a scheduled time falls in a skipped daylight-saving hour: scheduled workflows. A workflow run does not itself ensure that the generated screenshot is retained indefinitely; configure an appropriate destination or artifact-retention policy for your use.

Example: system cron
On a Linux host with cron, first confirm the absolute paths for Node and the script, then edit the crontab with crontab -e. This example runs daily at 09:00 according to the host’s cron timezone:

Cron’s timezone and daylight-saving behavior are host-specific; verify them rather than assuming they match your workstation.
Choose where screenshots go and how failures are handled
The script writes locally to screenshots/YYYY-MM-DD.png by default. A local directory is simple, but it is not durable storage if the runner is temporary or the machine is lost. For scheduled workflows, copy the output to a persistent storage location or configure workflow artifacts with a retention period that meets your needs.

- Avoid accidental overwrites: a date-only filename is suitable for one intended capture per calendar day. Include a time or run identifier if retries or multiple runs per day should produce separate files.
- Preserve useful diagnostics: keep the scheduler’s logs and print the destination filename. Redirect cron output to a log or configure the hosted workflow to retain relevant artifacts.
- Plan for transient failures: a timeout, DNS issue, browser crash, or target-site change can interrupt a run. Use scheduler-supported retries or alerting if missing a capture matters, and decide whether a retry should overwrite the original date’s file or create a second record.
- Protect secrets: store credentials or private target URLs in the scheduler’s secret mechanism rather than committing them to the script or workflow. The example uses a GitHub Actions secret for the URL.
- Check resource costs: full-page screenshots of very long pages can take more time and memory than viewport captures. Use the smallest page scope and dimensions that meet the comparison need, and set realistic navigation timeouts.
Troubleshooting
The job never runs
For Node Schedule, verify that the Node process stays alive. For cron, check that the crontab entry is installed for the expected account, that paths are absolute, and that cron is running. For GitHub Actions, confirm that the workflow file is on the repository’s default branch and that the schedule is expressed in the expected timezone.

The screenshot is blank or missing page content
Check that navigation succeeded and that the page’s meaningful content is present before capture. A generic network-idle condition may occur before a client-side update or may never occur on a page with persistent network activity. Wait for a known selector or other page-specific readiness signal, and inspect the scheduler logs for navigation errors.
The screenshot is clipped or unexpectedly tall
Check the viewport dimensions and whether you set fullPage to true. Use clip when only a particular region is required. Extremely long pages may consume substantial resources during full-page capture.
It works locally but fails on the scheduled host
Compare the host’s Node version and supported browser platform with Puppeteer’s system requirements. On Linux, install the required system packages; also verify that the scheduler can access the browser executable and write to the output directory.
The image is saved under the “wrong” date
The example uses a UTC filename. If the schedule uses another timezone, format the filename in that same IANA timezone or deliberately keep UTC and label it as such. A run close to midnight can otherwise create an apparent off-by-one-day mismatch.
