Selenium can save a viewport or element screenshot as a PNG, but a PNG screenshot is not automatically transparent. Selenium’s documented methods explain how to capture the image; they do not promise that the output preserves transparent pixels. If you need real transparency, inspect the PNG’s alpha channel in the browser and capture setup you plan to use before relying on it.
What Selenium does—and does not—guarantee
There are three separate questions: whether Selenium captures the area you want, whether the file is a PNG, and whether the PNG contains transparent pixels where you need them. Selenium documents viewport and element captures, and WebDriver specifies screenshots as lossless PNG images returned as Base64. Neither PNG format nor a transparent CSS background proves that the exported pixels have alpha transparency. The sources do not establish a browser-independent Selenium procedure that reliably produces transparent pixels. Treat transparency as something to verify for your particular browser, driver, and capture route—not as a result guaranteed by the screenshot method.
Capture a viewport or element with Selenium

To capture one located element instead of the viewport, use the element’s screenshot method:

Headless Chrome command-line capture
Chrome also documents a headless screenshot flag that can be paired with a window size:
chrome --headless --window-size=1280,800 --screenshot=shot.png https://example.comThis captures through Chrome’s command-line interface rather than Selenium. Chrome’s cited headless command-line reference documents --screenshot and --window-size, but does not promise alpha transparency.
How to verify actual transparency
If a downstream workflow requires a transparent asset, test the resulting file itself. Inspect its PNG color type or alpha channel with an image viewer or image-processing tool that exposes channel information, and check pixels in the areas that must be transparent. An image that merely appears to have a transparent-looking page background may instead contain an opaque background color.

- Set the page’s CSS background to transparent only if that is appropriate for the rendering. This affects page styling; it does not prove that the screenshot export retained alpha.
- Test the exact browser, driver, headless or headed mode, and screenshot method you intend to use.
- Check the PNG’s alpha values in the required areas and open it over more than one background color to catch opaque fills.
- If the capture is not transparent, do not treat changing the file extension or relying on CSS alone as a fix. Choose a capture path with an explicit alpha-preservation guarantee or use a workflow that creates transparency and verify its output.
Common problems and fixes
The PNG has a solid background
A PNG can be fully opaque. Confirm alpha-channel contents rather than inferring transparency from the extension or CSS. The cited Selenium and WebDriver documentation does not specify an alpha-preserving workflow.
The page looks transparent in the browser but not in the file
Browser rendering and exported image pixels are different requirements. Inspect the saved file; a CSS background setting alone is not evidence of transparent output.
The screenshot is blank or the page is incomplete
First verify that Selenium navigated to the intended page and that the element selector matches a visible element. A successful screenshot save only establishes that an image was written, not that the desired content or alpha channel is present.

The headless CLI command does not produce transparency
The Chrome headless screenshot documentation explains capture flags and dimensions, not transparent output. Use it for ordinary headless capture, but verify any alpha requirement independently.
