On Windows, press Windows logo key + Shift + S. The Snipping Tool overlay appears; choose rectangular, window, full-screen, or freeform capture, then select what you need. Windows copies the result to the clipboard, ready to paste into a message, document, or image editor. You do not need a dedicated Print Screen (PrtSc) key.
Windows: the fastest method without PrtSc
- Press Windows logo key + Shift + S. Microsoft describes this as opening “the snipping tool overlay to capture an image snapshot.”
- Choose a mode from the overlay: Rectangular snip, Window snip, Full-screen snip, or Freeform snip.
- For a rectangular or freeform snip, drag around the area. For a window snip, select the window. Full-screen snip captures the display without a selection.
- Paste the image with Ctrl + V into an email, chat, document, Paint, or another image editor.
This shortcut is a capture-and-copy workflow, not necessarily an instant file save. After the capture, a notification normally lets you open it in Snipping Tool, where you can annotate, edit, and save it. If you need a file immediately, open Snipping Tool from the Start menu and use its capture controls, then choose the save command in the app.
Choose the right Windows snip mode
| Mode | What it captures | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Rectangular | A rectangle you draw | A panel, error message, or part of a webpage |
| Window | One application window | Sharing an app without exposing the rest of the desktop |
| Full screen | The entire display | A complete desktop or an app shown full screen |
| Freeform | An outline you draw | Irregular shapes where a rectangle includes unwanted content |
If the overlay is hidden before you can choose, open Snipping Tool from Start, select the capture type, and begin a new snip. This route is also useful when you want to review, mark up, and save several captures rather than merely paste one.
If your keyboard has no Print Screen button
Microsoft lists Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar as an alternative for devices without a PrtSc button. Treat it as a documented option rather than a guarantee: laptop manufacturers and external-keyboard layouts can assign the Fn layer differently. Try the Snipping Tool shortcut first; it does not depend on a Print Screen key.

Where the screenshot goes
Clipboard capture
Windows logo key + Shift + S places the image on the clipboard. Click the destination app and press Ctrl + V. In a browser-based form, messaging app, or office document, the pasted image may appear inline; in an image editor, you can crop or export it.
Saving a file
Open the captured image in Snipping Tool from the notification or from the app’s capture history. Use the save control to choose a folder and image filename. If you only need to attach the image once, pasting from the clipboard avoids creating a separate file.

When the clipboard is replaced
A new copy operation can replace the screenshot. Paste it before copying other content, or save it from Snipping Tool if you need to keep it. For a long webpage, take multiple captures or use the page’s own export feature; the basic snipping overlay captures what is visible on screen.
Mac alternatives
On a Mac, the equivalent built-in shortcuts do not use a Print Screen key:
- Shift-Command-3 captures the screen.
- Shift-Command-4 lets you select an area.
macOS also provides screenshot options through its screenshot interface. Some applications, including certain protected-content apps, may prevent screenshots of their windows. If a shortcut appears to do nothing in one app, test it on the desktop or another ordinary window to distinguish an app restriction from a keyboard problem.

Chromebook alternatives
Chromebooks use Google’s built-in screenshot controls rather than the Windows Print Screen convention. Follow the Screenshot command in the Chromebook keyboard controls to capture the full screen or a selected area. If an external keyboard lacks the Chromebook’s Show windows key, Google lists Ctrl + Shift + F5 as a fallback.
On a Chromebook tablet, open Screen capture from the power-button or status-area controls. The exact buttons depend on whether you are using the tablet interface or a physical keyboard.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWindows troubleshooting
The overlay does not appear
- Press all three keys together: Windows logo key, Shift, and S.
- Try the Windows key by itself to confirm that it opens the Start menu. If it does not, the key may be locked by a keyboard gaming mode or hardware switch.
- Open Snipping Tool from Start. This bypasses shortcut conflicts and confirms whether the app is available.
- If a remote-desktop or virtual-machine session is active, the host may intercept the shortcut. Run Snipping Tool inside the remote session or capture the host separately.
The image is not where expected
The shortcut copies the capture to the clipboard. Click the target application and press Ctrl + V; do not look only for a newly created file. To retain a file, open the capture in Snipping Tool and save it.

The wrong monitor or window was captured
Use Window snip and click the precise window, or use Rectangular snip to draw the area manually. For several monitors, move the pointer to the display you intend to capture before selecting a mode.
The screenshot is blank or incomplete
Some protected-content applications deliberately block screenshots. A blank result can also occur if a window closes between opening the overlay and selecting it; reopen the window and repeat the capture. For moving content, pause the video or page first so the selected frame is stable.
The Fn shortcut does not work
Fn behavior is manufacturer-specific. Check whether your keyboard has an Fn-lock indicator, try toggling that mode, and use Windows logo key + Shift + S instead. The Snipping Tool method is the dependable software alternative when no PrtSc key exists.

If what you need is a screenshot of a website rather than your desktop, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. It is useful for repeatable captures, CI jobs, documentation, and AI-agent workflows; it is not a replacement for the Windows overlay when you need to capture an arbitrary desktop window.
Start with the API documentation at https://screenshotneo.com/docs/. The following calls use the supplied endpoint and can be run as written after replacing the key.
cURL
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo accepts options for full-page captures with lazy images loaded, a single element selected by CSS selector, dark mode, 12 device presets or a custom viewport, retina scale, PDF paper size, margins, landscape orientation and page ranges. You can also provide custom CSS or JavaScript, click an element before capture, hide selectors, wait for a selector, delay, or network idle, and block ads, trackers, requests, or resource types. Headers, cookies, user agents, Authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, image resizing, cache TTLs, signed public-image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, and an OpenAPI specification are available. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, which can simplify a migration.
Quick Recap
Why the API output is different from a casual desktop snip
- Before capture, it accepts the cookie or consent banner like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets. Each cleanup step can be turned off.
- Only clean shots are billed. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and every response identifies the result with
X-Page-VerdictandX-Billedheaders. - An MCP server provides
take_screenshot,get_page_info, andcapture_pdftools to Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
Plans
| Plan | Allowance | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Free | 1,000 shots per month | $0, no card |
| Starter | 3,000 shots | $5 |
| Growth | 15,000 shots | $15 |
| Pro | 60,000 shots | $39 |
| Scale | 250,000 shots | $99 |

Yearly billing gives two months free, and every feature is included on every plan. Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed; AI agents can capture through MCP; and the free tier includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card.
