There are two different tasks: saving a QR code as a screenshot, and reading a QR code that is already saved. To save it, display the code and use your phone’s normal screenshot controls. To open the destination from that image, open the screenshot in a photo app and use an image-recognition tool such as Google Lens. If the code is printed or displayed on another screen, scan it live with your camera instead; a camera cannot inspect the phone’s own display through itself.
First decide which QR-code problem you have
- You need a copy of the code: display it, take a screenshot with your model’s standard button or gesture, and find the resulting image in Photos or Gallery.
- You need to open a code saved in a screenshot: select that image in an image viewer and invoke QR or image recognition.
- You are looking at a physical code or a code on a second screen: use the regular camera scanner or a built-in Scan QR control.
A screenshot is only an image; saving it does not automatically visit the encoded link. Recognition is a separate step.
How to screenshot the QR code
On any phone
- Show the QR code at a useful size. If it is in an app, web page, message or video, pause it first.
- Use your phone’s normal screenshot shortcut or gesture. The exact buttons differ by manufacturer and model, so use the device’s built-in screenshot help if the shortcut is unfamiliar.
- Open Photos, Gallery or the screenshots folder and confirm that the entire square code is present. Crop surrounding content only if cropping does not remove any part of the code.
- Keep the original image if you may need to prove what page or message displayed it. Make a separate cropped copy for easier scanning.
Why the screenshot may not scan
- The code is partly outside the frame or covered by a notification, cursor or overlay.
- Motion blur, low resolution or heavy compression has destroyed the small square modules.
- Reflections, extreme brightness or a dark-mode inversion make the pattern hard to distinguish.
- The image is too small in the viewer. Zoom in without applying a smoothing filter, then try recognition again.
Scan a QR code that is already in a screenshot
Android phones: Google Photos and Lens
- Open Google Photos and select the screenshot.
- Tap Lens (the Google Lens icon). Google Photos can send the selected photo to Lens for actions such as recognizing a QR code and offering its destination.
- Review the detected address before opening it. A QR code can contain a web URL, text, contact details, Wi‑Fi credentials or a payment request.
Menu placement can vary with the Photos release and phone maker. If Lens is not visible, update Google Photos, open the image in another Google-supported viewer, or use the device’s built-in image-recognition option.
Pixel phones: scan a code shown elsewhere
For a code on paper, a monitor or another phone, open Camera and frame the complete square. Pixel guidance also documents a Scan QR code control in Quick Settings. Keep the phone steady, use good lighting and move closer while keeping all four corners visible. These instructions are for a code presented to the camera, not for a QR image currently displayed on the same Pixel.

iPhone: scan a live code
- Open Camera and select Photo mode.
- Point at the QR code on paper or another screen and keep the complete pattern in view.
- Tap the notification or link that appears at the top of the screen.
You can also open Control Center and choose Scan Code. If that control is missing, add it in the Control Center customization settings. Apple’s documented Camera and Control Center routes concern a code presented to the iPhone camera.
iPhone: recognize a saved screenshot
Open the screenshot in Photos and try the image-recognition or Live Text action offered by your iOS version. The exact button, icon and menu name are version-sensitive, and availability can differ by iPhone model and language. If no QR action appears, enlarge the image, check that the code is complete, and try a current iOS and Photos update. Do not assume that the live Camera workflow will read an image shown on the same iPhone.

Android codes visible on the current screen
On supported Android devices, Circle to Search can analyze content visible on screen, including some QR codes. Availability and the gesture vary by device, Android release and region. If it is not offered, take a screenshot and use Google Photos/Lens instead.
Improve recognition when a saved image fails
- Restore the full code: undo a crop that cuts off a finder square or quiet margin.
- Increase usable size: view the original-resolution screenshot rather than a thumbnail sent through a chat app.
- Remove visual obstruction: retake the screenshot after dismissing popups, video controls and notification banners.
- Try a cleaner frame: if the code is animated, pause on the sharpest frame and capture again.
- Use the live scanner when possible: for a code on another display, Camera or Scan Code usually avoids screenshot compression.
- Check the result safely: read the domain and context before opening. Recognition does not certify that a destination is trustworthy.
What the QR code can contain
Recognition may return a URL, plain text, a phone number, an email address, a contact card, a calendar event, Wi‑Fi setup data or a payment-related request. The same visual process can expose all of these; the action offered after detection depends on the payload and your operating system. Treat unexpected login, payment or app-install prompts cautiously, especially when the screenshot came from an unknown sender.

Troubleshooting checklist
“No QR code found” on a saved image
Verify that all corners and the white margin around the code are visible. Use the original screenshot, not a compressed messenger preview, and try a sharper frame or higher zoom. On Android, select the image in Google Photos and tap Lens again; on iPhone, try the current Photos/Live Text action available on that device.

The live camera does not show a link
Move back or forward while keeping the entire square in frame, hold steady, improve lighting and clean the camera lens. Avoid glare and patterned backgrounds. Pixel guidance specifically recommends these adjustments.

The wrong page opens
Do not continue automatically. Compare the displayed domain with the expected organization, close the page, and ask the code owner for a fresh code. QR recognition can be accurate while the encoded destination is malicious or outdated.
The scanner control is missing
On iPhone, add Scan Code to Control Center if it is absent. On Pixel, look in Quick Settings for Scan QR code. Other Android models may use different labels; Camera and Google Photos/Lens are the broadest built-in alternatives.

No. A screenshot only preserves pixels. You must run a recognition action and then choose whether to open the detected result.
Why does scanning the phone’s own screen with its camera fail?
The camera is viewing the physical world; it cannot directly inspect the display that contains its own camera app. Use the saved-image workflow instead.
