Taking a screenshot on a Google Pixel is usually quick and consistent, but the exact method depends on your Pixel model, Android version, and which features are enabled.
This guide covers every mainstream way to capture the screen (including scrolling screenshots), plus where to find the file and what to try when the shortcut stops working.

What you can screenshot on a Google Pixel
You can capture almost anything currently visible on your display—home screen, apps, error messages, chats, receipts, and web pages. For long content, use scrolling screenshots to extend the capture beyond the initial view.
Depending on your model and settings, you may also be able to capture with gestures (like Quick Tap) and add basic edits immediately after the capture.

Prerequisites and what to check first
Before you start troubleshooting, confirm these basics:
- Button hardware works: Try unlocking your phone, adjusting volume, and pressing Power to ensure buttons respond.
- Screen capture isn’t blocked: Some apps (banking, streaming) may restrict screenshots.
- Android version: Pixel runs “stock” Android with Google features. Android 13/14 behavior is similar, but some options may be worded differently.
- Gestures enabled (optional): If you want Quick Tap-style captures, confirm the feature is turned on in Settings.
Method 1: Use the hardware buttons (fastest)
This is the most reliable way on any Pixel running Android. Use it when you need a guaranteed capture.
- Open the screen you want to capture.
- Press Power and Volume Down at the same time.
- Hold for about 1 second and release.
- Look for a screenshot preview banner or thumbnail in the corner (varies by Android version).
If you’ve got an on-screen accessibility overlay or you’re using a case with button covers, the timing may be slightly off—try again more firmly.

Some Pixel models support Quick Tap actions (a double-tap on the back). If enabled, you can use it to trigger a screenshot.
- Open Settings on your Pixel.
- Tap System > Gestures (or Gesture depending on version).
- Tap Quick Tap.
- Enable Quick Tap.
- Choose the action labeled something like Take screenshot (wording may vary).
- Go back to your screen, then double-tap the back of your phone.
If the capture doesn’t trigger, confirm you’re tapping the back firmly and consistently (right behind the camera module) and that the phone isn’t inside a thick case.
Method 3: Use the Power menu
Some Pixel configurations include screenshot options in the Power menu. This is handy if you’re trying to avoid button timing.

On many Pixel setups, you can ask Google Assistant to take a screenshot. Availability can depend on your region, Assistant setup, and Android version.
- Open the screen you want to capture.
- Say a command like Hey Google, take a screenshot.
- Or open Assistant and use a voice prompt for the same request.
- Confirm the screenshot preview appears in the corner.
If Assistant doesn’t respond, verify that Assistant is enabled on your Pixel and that your microphone permissions are allowed for Assistant.
Scrolling screenshots (capture an entire page)
To capture an entire web page, long email, or extended list, use the scrolling screenshot feature. After your initial screenshot, Pixel offers controls to keep capturing the rest.
- Take a normal screenshot using Power + Volume Down.
- When the screenshot preview appears, look for an option such as Capture more, Scroll, or Scrolling (label varies).
- Tap the option, then follow the prompt to extend the capture.
- Stop when you’ve captured everything you need.
Scrolling screenshots may not work in every app (some apps block them or render content in a way that prevents continuous capture).

Where screenshots are saved and how to find them
By default, screenshots go into your device storage in a standard location. The fastest way to locate them is through Photos or the device’s screenshot album.
- Open Photos (or Google Photos, depending on your setup).
- Look for Library and then Photos on device.
- Find the Screenshots folder/album.
You can also use the search bar in Photos and type screenshot or the date you captured it.
Screen recording vs screenshots (what’s the difference)
A screenshot captures one still image. A screen recording captures a video of what’s happening on the display—useful for tutorials, bug reports, and showing steps.
To record screen on many Pixel/Android versions:
- Swipe down twice to open Quick Settings.
- Look for Screen record.
- Tap Screen record and choose options like microphone audio (if prompted).
- Tap Start.
- Tap Stop when finished.
If you don’t see Screen record in Quick Settings, edit your quick tiles to add it.

1) Try a different button timing
Press Power + Volume Down at the same time, then release together. If you release too early, the phone may treat it like a volume press.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
2) Check for accessibility or remapped buttons
Some accessibility tools or custom controls can interfere with button gestures.
- Open Settings > Accessibility.
- Look for anything related to hardware buttons, gestures, or system controls.
- Temporarily disable the suspect feature and test again.
3) Remove the case and test
Thick cases can prevent a full press on the Volume Down button. Test without the case to rule out mechanical issues.
4) Restart the phone
A quick reboot often fixes stuck UI states or background permission glitches.
5) Confirm the app isn’t blocking screenshots
Some apps intentionally prevent screenshotting (for DRM, privacy, or security). If you only fail in one app, that’s usually the reason.
- Try the same method on the home screen or Settings.
- If those work, the issue is likely app-level.
6) Check storage and permissions
If storage is full, the phone may fail to save new screenshots.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Pressing Power alone: Power triggers the lock/power menu, not a screenshot.
- Pressing Volume Down slightly after Power: The phone may only register one button press.
- Expecting scrolling screenshots everywhere: Some apps don’t support extended capture.
- Missing the preview: The preview card disappears; if it’s gone, edit later from Photos.
- Assuming Assistant always works: Assistant screenshot commands can vary by setup and region.
FAQ
Do all Google Pixel phones support scrolling screenshots?
Most modern Pixels support scrolling screenshots when the app permits it, but not every app or content type allows it. If you don’t see Capture more after the initial screenshot, the app may be blocking the feature.
Why do my screenshots look cut off or incomplete?
That can happen if you try scrolling screenshots on content that doesn’t fully load or if the app blocks continuous capture. Try again and give the page time to finish loading.
Where can I find screenshots I took yesterday?
Open Photos or Google Photos, then check the Screenshots album or search for screenshots by date.
Can I take screenshots during streaming or banking apps?
Some streaming and banking apps intentionally block screenshots and screen recording. If the capture doesn’t appear or is blank, that’s usually app security.
How do I delete a screenshot I don’t need?
Open the screenshot in Photos and choose Delete. For Google Photos, it may go to Trash first—check the app’s trash/bin if it’s not disappearing right away.
Bottom Line
If you need a dependable method, use Power + Volume Down—it works on essentially every Google Pixel in normal conditions. From there, you can use the preview tools for quick edits or switch to scrolling screenshots for long pages.
