Fastest method: bring the Internet Explorer window to the front and press Windows+Shift+S. Choose rectangular, window, full-screen, or freeform snip mode, then select what you want. The result opens in Snipping Tool, where you can copy, save, edit, or share it. For only the active Internet Explorer window, press Alt+PrtScn; for a saved full-screen image, press Windows+PrtScn on supported keyboards.
Choose the capture that matches your goal

These are Windows capture features, not Internet Explorer commands. The current Windows shortcut guidance applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11, but the exact response can vary with keyboard hardware, settings, and application context.
Use Windows+Shift+S for a selected area or browser window
- Open the Internet Explorer page and arrange the window exactly as you want it captured. Scroll to the portion that should be visible.
- Press Windows+Shift+S. Windows dims the screen and opens the Snipping Tool capture overlay.
- Choose a mode from the overlay:
- Rectangular snip: drag a rectangle around a specific part of the page.
- Window snip: select the Internet Explorer window to capture that window’s visible contents.
- Full-screen snip: capture everything currently displayed on the monitor.
- Freeform snip: draw an irregular outline around the area you need.
- Release the mouse button or select the window. The snip opens in Snipping Tool.
- Use Snipping Tool’s controls to copy the image, save it, edit it, or share it. Saving creates an image file only when you choose a save location; the initial capture can remain on the clipboard or in the editor.
Getting a clean browser-only image
Window mode is usually the most reliable choice when you want the Internet Explorer frame and page but not other applications. Before selecting the window, close unrelated windows, move the pointer away from important text, and set the browser zoom and scroll position. A screen snip records what is visible, including browser toolbars, banners, cursor artifacts, and any notification that happens to be on top.
Capture only the active Internet Explorer window with Alt+PrtScn
- Click the Internet Explorer title bar or page so it is the active window.
- Press Alt+PrtScn. Windows copies an image of the active window to the clipboard.
- Open Paint or another image-capable application and press Ctrl+V.
- Save the pasted image in the format you need, such as PNG or JPEG, and add annotations if required.
This method does not automatically create a file. If you switch applications or copy something else before pasting, the clipboard image can be replaced, so paste it before continuing with other work.

Save a full-screen screenshot directly
- Press Windows+PrtScn on a keyboard that supports the shortcut.
- Windows saves the captured monitor view automatically.
- Open File Explorer and go to Pictures > Screenshots.
On a device without a dedicated Print Screen key, Microsoft documents Fn+Windows+Space as an alternative on supported hardware. Laptop function layers differ, so look for a key marked PrtScn, Print Screen, or a similar camera/screen symbol. This shortcut captures the complete visible screen, not an entire page that continues below the fold.

Visible screen versus a full scrolling webpage
A full-screen snip contains only the pixels currently displayed. It does not automatically scroll through a long Internet Explorer page and stitch the sections together. The Windows instructions for Snipping Tool and Print Screen document region, window, and monitor captures; they do not establish a built-in Internet Explorer scrolling-page mode.

- Capture several consecutive sections with Windows+Shift+S and label or combine them in an image editor.
- Use a tool that explicitly advertises full-page webpage capture, then verify that it handles lazy-loaded images, cookie dialogs, and pages that require scrolling.
- If you only need a record of the visible state, capture the relevant viewport and include the page URL and scroll position in your notes.
Do not describe a normal screen or window capture as a “full webpage screenshot”; readers may assume content below the visible area is included when it is not.

Windows+Shift+S does nothing
- Search Start for Snipping Tool and open it directly. Choose a capture mode in the app, then select the Internet Explorer area.
- Make sure the Windows key is not disabled by a keyboard utility, remote-desktop policy, or gaming mode.
- Try the shortcut with Internet Explorer focused rather than while another dialog has keyboard focus.
Alt+PrtScn pastes the wrong thing
- Click the Internet Explorer title bar again before pressing the keys; Alt+PrtScn captures the active window.
- Paste immediately into Paint. A later copy operation can replace the clipboard image.
- If your keyboard uses a function layer, try the manufacturer’s Fn modifier with the Print Screen key.
Windows+PrtScn does not create a file
- Confirm that the keyboard actually has a working PrtScn function; use Fn+Windows+Space where supported.
- Check Pictures > Screenshots rather than the Desktop or Downloads folder.
- Use Snipping Tool instead if your Windows edition, keyboard, or settings do not support automatic file saving.
The capture includes an unwanted popup or notification
Screen capture records whatever is visible at the instant you select it. Dismiss notifications, newsletter prompts, chat bubbles, and browser dialogs first, then wait for the page to settle and capture again. Window mode will still include overlays that belong to the browser window.

The page looks blank or partly loaded
Wait for the page to finish rendering, then retry. If the page depends on a login, a script, or content loaded after scrolling, capture after that content is visible. A local screenshot cannot recover content that Internet Explorer never rendered on screen.
Improve quality before you capture
- Set the viewport: maximize or resize Internet Explorer consistently so repeated screenshots have the same dimensions.
- Choose readable scaling: adjust browser zoom before capture rather than enlarging a small image afterward.
- Remove distractions: close unrelated windows and dismiss notifications, menus, and transient tooltips.
- Check sensitive data: screen captures can include account names, addresses, tokens, or private messages visible in the browser.
- Use lossless output for text: save as PNG when sharp UI text matters; use JPEG only when a smaller file is more important.
- Record context: for bug reports, note the URL, time, browser state, and steps that produced the screen so another person can reproduce it.
Automate a webpage capture instead of photographing your monitor
Keyboard shortcuts are ideal for a one-off view of Internet Explorer. They are less suitable when you need the same URL captured on a schedule, from a server, or as a complete scrolling page. An API can render the URL independently and return an image or PDF without opening Internet Explorer on your desktop.
