On an HP Envy running Windows 11, press Windows + Shift + S to open Snipping Tool, choose a capture mode, and drag over what you want. The image is copied to the clipboard and appears in a notification; select that notification to annotate and save it. For a full-screen file saved automatically, press Windows + PrtScn instead.
The best all-purpose method: Windows + Shift + S
This shortcut works across current Windows 11 HP Envy models, regardless of whether the keyboard has a dedicated Print Screen key.
- Press and hold the Windows logo key and Shift, then press S.
- The desktop dims and the Snipping Tool overlay appears at the top of the screen.
- Choose a mode: Rectangular, Freeform, Window, or Full screen.
- Make the capture. For Rectangular, drag around the area; for Freeform, draw the outline; for Window, select a window; for Full screen, Windows captures the display immediately.
- A notification appears. Select it to open the capture in Snipping Tool, where you can annotate, crop, save, or share it.
Microsoft says a captured snip is automatically copied to the Snipping Tool window. It is also available on the clipboard, so you can paste it immediately with Ctrl + V into Paint, Word, an email, or another app.

HP Envy Print Screen shortcuts
HP Envy is a product family, not one keyboard layout. Look near the upper-right of your keyboard for a key labeled PrtSc, PrtScn, or PrntScrn. On some models the label is printed as a secondary function, so hold Fn while pressing the key.

Windows + PrtScn: an automatically saved file
Press Windows + PrtScn to capture the complete display and save it without opening an editor. Open File Explorer, choose Pictures, then open Screenshots. Each capture is stored as an image file there.
PrtScn, Alt + PrtScn, and Windows + Shift + S: clipboard captures
These methods do not necessarily create a file in Pictures. Open the destination app and press Ctrl + V. Paint is useful when you want to crop or save the pasted image: paste it, make your edits, choose File, then Save as, and select an image format and folder.
Saving from the Snipping Tool notification
After a Snipping Tool capture, select the notification in the lower-right corner. In the editor, use the Save button, choose a folder and filename, and confirm the format. The editor also provides pen, highlighter, and crop tools.
Capturing one window instead of the whole desktop
For a clean image of one app, first click its title bar so it is active. Then either press Alt + PrtScn and paste the result, or press Windows + Shift + S, choose Window, and select the app. The Snipping Tool approach lets you open the editor and save directly; Alt + PrtScn is faster when you only need to paste the image elsewhere.
Capturing menus that disappear
A menu may close as soon as you click another control. Open Start, type Snipping Tool, and launch it directly instead of using the instant shortcut. In Snipping Tool, open the delay menu and choose between 1 and 5 seconds, as documented by Microsoft. Start the delay, open the menu, and wait for the capture. This gives you time to compose a menu, tooltip, or context menu before it is captured.

Troubleshooting HP Envy screenshots
Windows + Shift + S does nothing
Open Start, type Snipping Tool, and launch the app directly. If it opens, use its capture button and then check whether the shortcut works again after Windows finishes pending updates or a restart.

PrtScn copies an image but no file appears
That is expected for the plain PrtScn and Alt + PrtScn shortcuts. Paste with Ctrl + V, or use Windows + PrtScn when you want automatic saving to PicturesScreenshots. You can also open the Snipping Tool notification and use Save.
PrtScn opens Snipping Tool instead
Windows has a setting named Use the Print Screen button to open screen snipping. When enabled, pressing PrtScn launches the snipping overlay rather than making a traditional clipboard-only capture. Microsoft documents that this behavior can be changed in Windows Settings; search Settings for that exact phrase and switch it to your preferred state.
The Print Screen key is missing
Check the top-right area for a smaller secondary label such as PrtSc or PrtScn and hold Fn when pressing it. If there is no label, try Fn + Windows + Space Bar; Microsoft identifies that combination as a hardware-dependent alternative. The exact arrangement varies by HP Envy model, so Windows + Shift + S is the most consistent choice.
The capture contains the wrong monitor or window
For a single app, activate the window before using Alt + PrtScn, or choose Window mode in Snipping Tool. For a specific region, use Rectangular mode and drag only around the desired content. Full-screen methods intentionally include everything visible on the selected display.
