Chrome has no single key that instantly saves an entire webpage. The reliable built-in workflow is: open DevTools, press Ctrl+Shift+P on Windows, Linux, or ChromeOS (or Command+Shift+P on macOS), type screenshot, and choose a capture command. Select Capture a full size screenshot when you need content below the fold; use viewport or area capture for smaller jobs.

The Command Menu shortcut is not itself a screenshot shortcut. It opens the menu after DevTools is open; the capture command is the next step. Chrome documents these commands in its DevTools Command Menu guide.
How to take a full-page screenshot in desktop Chrome
- Navigate to the page you want to save. Let important images, charts, and embedded content finish loading.
- Open DevTools with Ctrl+Shift+J or F12 on Windows/Linux/ChromeOS, or Command+Option+I on macOS. Chrome lists these opening shortcuts in its keyboard-shortcuts reference.
- Press Ctrl+Shift+P (Windows/Linux/ChromeOS) or Command+Shift+P (Mac). You can also open DevTools’ three-dot menu and choose Run command.
- Type screenshot in the Command Menu.
- Choose Capture a full size screenshot. Chrome renders the page’s content outside the current viewport and downloads an image, normally as a PNG.
For a very long or highly dynamic page, wait for lazy-loaded sections before step 4. Scrolling through the page once can trigger images that load only when they approach the viewport.
Choose the capture mode that matches the job

Choose the viewport option when the visible browser content is all you need—for example, a bug report showing an error near the top of a page. Browser chrome (tabs, address bar, and extensions) is not included; the capture is the webpage viewport.

Full-size screenshot
This is Chrome’s built-in answer to “screenshot the whole webpage.” It includes content below the fold without requiring you to stitch separate images. Fixed headers, sticky toolbars, animations, and infinite-scroll interfaces can still produce unusual results because the page is rendered as one document rather than as a manual scroll recording.
Area screenshot
Capture area screenshot lets you drag around a specific card, paragraph, or region. The Command Menu documentation notes that area capture does not work when DevTools is undocked; dock DevTools inside the browser window first if the command fails.
Device-mode capture
Open the device toolbar in DevTools, select a device or set a custom width and height, then use the device-mode three-dot menu and choose Capture screenshot or Capture full size screenshot. Chrome’s Device Mode documentation also describes an optional device frame when frame display is enabled. This is useful for checking a responsive layout at a particular viewport, not for reproducing the entire desktop browser window.
What to do when the shortcut does not work
DevTools opens, but the Command Menu does not
- Click inside the DevTools panel before pressing the shortcut; the Command Menu shortcut is scoped to DevTools.
- Use DevTools’ three-dot menu → Run command instead.
- On macOS, verify you are using Command+Shift+P, not the Windows/Linux combination.
- On managed computers, a system utility or browser extension may reserve the keys. The menu path avoids that conflict.
No screenshot command appears
Type only screenshot in the Command Menu and scroll the results. If DevTools is in an unusual layout, reset its dock position or reopen it. Updating Chrome can also restore commands that are missing in an old installation.

The full-page image is clipped or blank
- Reload the page and wait for network activity and fonts to finish.
- Scroll through the document once to trigger lazy images, then run the command again.
- Disable an extension that changes page content, or test in an Incognito window (extensions are disabled there unless explicitly allowed).
- For a page that requires a login, confirm the session is still valid; DevTools captures what your current tab can access.
Area capture is unavailable
Dock DevTools rather than leaving it as a separate window. Chrome specifically documents this limitation for area screenshots.
Sticky elements appear repeatedly
Full-size rendering can preserve fixed-position headers or chat controls at multiple positions. Hide the offending element temporarily with the Elements panel, or use area/viewport capture when a clean single section matters more than page completeness.
Operating-system shortcuts for a visible screen
If you need the desktop, browser frame, or a selected screen region rather than webpage content, use the operating system’s capture controls. These produce a screen image, so browser tabs, notifications, and other windows may be included. They are different from DevTools’ page capture and do not automatically scroll through a document. macOS shortcut guidance is also discussed in a Chrome Community thread; community posts are not Chrome’s product documentation.

Print to PDF versus an image
Chrome’s print dialog can save a long page as a PDF, which is preferable when selectable text, pagination, or printing is the goal. A PDF is not a pixel-for-pixel screenshot: print styles can hide navigation, change colors, or reflow columns. Use Capture a full size screenshot when visual fidelity as one image is the requirement.
Preparing pages for a dependable capture
Wait for content deliberately
Single-page apps may render their shell first and data later. Keep the tab open until the data, images, and fonts are present. If a page uses infinite scroll, load the sections you need before capturing; “full size” cannot include content that the site has not yet inserted into the DOM.
Control the viewport
Responsive breakpoints can change navigation and card layouts. Device Mode lets you set an exact width and height, while the normal window captures the current viewport. Record the width when a screenshot is being used for a bug report so another person can reproduce it.

DevTools captures the authenticated page exactly as displayed. Check for names, account numbers, internal URLs, and notification banners before sharing the downloaded file. Avoid using a production account when a test account will demonstrate the same issue.
