It opens Snipping Tool’s overlay, where you can capture a rectangle, freeform area, window, or the entire screen. For an automatic full-screen file, press Windows logo key + PrtScn; Windows saves it under PicturesScreenshots. Pressing PrtSc (also labeled PrtScn or PrntScrn) copies the whole display to the clipboard, while Alt + PrtSc copies only the active window.
All of these built-in methods are free and need no extra screenshot application. Choose based on whether you need a selected area, one window, or the complete desktop; whether you want a file immediately or only a clipboard image; and whether you need to annotate before sharing.
Choose the right Windows 11 screenshot method
| Method | What it captures | Where the result goes | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows + Shift + S | Rectangle, freeform shape, one window, or full screen | Clipboard first; open the Snipping Tool notification to edit and save | A precise selection or quick annotation |
| Windows + PrtScn | Every visible display area | Image file in PicturesScreenshots | Saving a full-desktop image without opening another app |
| PrtSc | Entire screen | Clipboard | Pasting into Paint, Word, email, chat, or another image-capable app |
| Alt + PrtSc | Only the currently active window | Clipboard | Sharing one application without showing the rest of the desktop |
| Snipping Tool app | Rectangle, freeform, window, or full screen | Editor, then a location you choose (and normally the Screenshots folder for automatic saves) | Markup, cropping, delayed captures, and repeatable work |
On a keyboard with a function layer, you may need to hold Fn as well as PrtScn. The key can be labeled PrtSc, PrtScn, or PrntScrn.
Capture part of the desktop with Windows + Shift + S
- Arrange the windows and content exactly as you want them. Anything covered by another window cannot be selected from the screen.
- Press Windows logo key + Shift + S. The screen dims and the Snipping Tool capture bar appears.
- Choose a mode: Rectangle, Freeform, Window, or Full screen.
- For Rectangle or Freeform, drag around the area. For Window, point to and select the window. Full screen captures immediately after you choose it.
- Windows copies the result to the clipboard. Select the notification that appears to open the capture in Snipping Tool, where you can edit and save it.
Rectangle mode
Drag from one corner to the opposite corner. This is the most predictable choice for a dialog box, a section of a webpage, or a region of an application.

Freeform mode
Draw an outline around an irregular object. The area outside your outline is excluded, which is useful when the subject is not rectangular.
Window mode
Select a single visible window. This avoids manually trimming the taskbar or neighboring windows and is usually cleaner than a full-desktop capture.
Full-screen mode
Select the full-screen option when you want the same coverage as a desktop capture but still want the Snipping Tool notification and editor workflow.
Save the entire desktop directly with Windows + PrtScn
- Press Windows logo key + PrtScn. If your keyboard combines the key with another function, use the required Fn combination.
- Open File Explorer.
- Go to Pictures > Screenshots. Windows stores the captured image in the Screenshots subfolder of Pictures.
This shortcut is the simplest option when you need an image file immediately and do not need to mark it up first. It captures the full screen rather than just the window you are currently using. If you have more than one display, check the resulting image to confirm which desktop area your Windows configuration included.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Copy a full screen with PrtSc, then paste it
- Press PrtSc, PrtScn, or PrntScrn. Windows copies the complete screen to the clipboard.
- Open Paint, Word, an email composer, a chat app, or another application that accepts images.
- Press Ctrl + V to paste.
- Use that application’s Save or Export command if you need a file rather than a pasted image.
A clipboard capture is temporary: copying another item can replace it. Paste it into the destination before doing more clipboard work. This method is useful when the final destination is already open and you do not want to manage a separate screenshot file.

- Memory: 32GB DDR4 Ram

Capture only the active window with Alt + PrtSc
- Click the window you want so it is active and in the foreground.
- Press Alt + PrtSc (or the keyboard’s equivalent Fn combination).
- Switch to Paint, Word, email, chat, or another image-capable app and press Ctrl + V.
- Save from that app if a permanent image is required.
Alt + PrtSc excludes unrelated windows and most of the desktop. It captures the active window as Windows presents it, so menus or pop-ups that are not open at the moment of capture will not appear.
Use the Snipping Tool app for editing and delayed captures
- Open Start, type Snipping Tool, and select the app.
- Open Snipping mode and choose Rectangle, Window, Full screen, or Freeform.
- Select New, then make the selection when the screen dims.
- Use the editor’s pen, highlighter, shapes, eraser, crop, text actions, undo, and redo controls as needed.
- Save or share the finished capture.
Keep a menu open with Delay
Menus often close when you move to select them. In Snipping Tool, open the Delay setting and choose a delay from 1 to 5 seconds. Start the new snip, open the menu during the countdown, and make the selection when the screen dims. Use the shortest delay that gives you enough time to open the menu.
Automatic saving and changing the destination
Current Snipping Tool guidance says captures are automatically saved to the Screenshots folder unless you change the save behavior or folder in Settings. If a capture is not where expected, open Snipping Tool’s Settings and review its automatic-save and folder choices, then check the folder shown by that configuration. A capture opened from the notification can still be saved manually to any location you select.
Where Windows 11 screenshots are saved
- Windows + PrtScn: open File Explorer and choose Pictures > Screenshots.
- PrtSc: there is no file until you paste the clipboard image into an app and save it.
- Alt + PrtSc: the active-window image is on the clipboard; paste and save it from another app.
- Windows + Shift + S: the selected capture is copied to the clipboard and appears in a notification. Open that notification to edit and save it; automatic saving may also place it in the Screenshots folder according to Snipping Tool Settings.
If you are unsure whether a clipboard capture worked, open Paint and press Ctrl + V. If that produces an image, the capture is still available to paste and save.
Make a screenshot readable and safe to share
Prepare the desktop first
Close unrelated windows, move private notifications out of view, and enlarge the application content if text is too small. For a one-window result, use Window mode or Alt + PrtSc instead of cropping a busy desktop later.

Annotate before sending
Open the capture in Snipping Tool and use the pen, highlighter, shapes, or text actions to point out the relevant control. Crop away account names, message previews, tokens, addresses, or other information that the recipient does not need. Annotation changes the image you save or share, so retain the untouched capture separately if it may be needed as evidence.
Choose a useful destination
Use a saved file for documentation, tickets, and archives. Use the clipboard for a quick paste into a conversation or document. If another program needs a specific format, save or export from that program rather than assuming the clipboard format is suitable.
Common problems and fixes
Nothing happens when I press Print Screen
Look for a key labeled PrtSc, PrtScn, or PrntScrn, usually near the upper-right of a desktop keyboard. On some keyboards, hold Fn while pressing it. If the key is absent or inconvenient, Windows + Shift + S and the Snipping Tool app do not require a Print Screen key.
I cannot find the screenshot file
First determine which shortcut you used. Windows + PrtScn saves under PicturesScreenshots; PrtSc, Alt + PrtSc, and Windows + Shift + S initially use the clipboard. For the latter, open Paint and press Ctrl + V, or open the Snipping Tool notification and save the image. Also review Snipping Tool Settings if automatic saving or the folder was changed.
The capture is the wrong window
For Alt + PrtSc, click the target window immediately before pressing the shortcut. For Windows + Shift + S, choose Window mode and then select the correct window. If a dialog or menu is missing, reopen it and use Snipping Tool’s Delay.

I pressed Windows + Shift + R
That shortcut selects a region for a video recording in Snipping Tool, not a still screenshot. Use Windows + Shift + S for a still image.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe screenshot is blank or incomplete
Retry after the page or application finishes rendering. For a web page, scroll to the content you need and capture the visible region; a desktop screenshot only records what is currently displayed. If the issue affects one application repeatedly, use its own export or print function when available, then capture the result with Snipping Tool if necessary.
I captured sensitive information
Do not rely on a crop that merely hides data outside the visible crop if you will distribute the original file. Save a redacted copy with opaque markup or remove the sensitive content before sharing, and verify the final image at full size.
When a desktop shortcut is not the right tool
Windows shortcuts capture pixels currently displayed on your monitor. They do not create a fresh, server-side rendering of a URL, wait for a page’s network activity, remove consent dialogs, or produce a PDF of an entire webpage. For those website-automation tasks, a screenshot API is more appropriate than a local desktop shortcut.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. Give it a URL with one GET request and it returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Before capture it accepts the cookie or consent banner like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and each response reports the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. This is for capturing a webpage URL, not for photographing your local Windows desktop.
