For a fast, full-page website screenshot, use Firefox’s built-in Take Screenshot → Save full page. In Chrome, open DevTools Device Mode and choose Capture a full size screenshot. Use a visible-viewport or area capture when your portfolio needs to show one interaction or design detail rather than the entire page.

Choose the capture scope before you save
The screenshot should support the story your portfolio entry is telling. Decide what a reviewer needs to see:
- Full page: Shows hierarchy, page flow, responsive sections and how the design works from header to footer. Use it for a case study or redesign overview.
- Visible viewport: Shows the first screen at a specific desktop or mobile size. Use it when the hero, navigation or above-the-fold composition is the subject.
- Selected area: Focuses attention on a component, interaction, card grid or detail that would be hard to read in a long page.
- Individual element: Useful for documenting a button, form, navigation pattern or other isolated component.
Label what the image represents: a live site, an archived design, a prototype or your own redesign. A screenshot alone does not prove that the site owner approved your work or that the displayed design is current.

Prepare the page for a portfolio-quality capture
- Open the exact URL and wait for fonts, images and interactive content to finish loading.
- Set the browser window or device emulation to the viewport you want to show. Record the width and height if responsive behavior is part of the case study.
- Dismiss cookie notices, newsletter prompts and chat bubbles when you are allowed to do so. If a banner is part of the design you are documenting, leave it visible and explain why.
- Check that no personal data, private account information, unpublished work or confidential URLs appear in the frame.
- For lazy-loaded pages, scroll through the page once before a full-page capture so images have a chance to load. Inspect the saved file afterward; browser capture tools can differ on pages with sticky headers, animations or embedded content.
Use the original image when possible. Resize a copy for a portfolio card, and keep the unedited capture as an archive. Avoid edits that make a live site look like a client-approved mockup.
Firefox: save a visible or full-page screenshot
Firefox includes a built-in Screenshots tool for the current viewport, a selected region, an automatically detected page part and the entire page. Mozilla documents the workflow in its Firefox screenshot support guide.
Full-page workflow
- Open the page in Firefox.
- Right-click an empty part of the page. On macOS, Control-click.
- Select Take Screenshot. You can also use Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows or Linux, or Command+Shift+S on macOS.
- Choose Save full page.
- Download the image, then open it outside the browser and inspect the top, middle and bottom sections for missing images, duplicated sticky elements or clipped content.
Viewport, region or detected element
From the same Screenshots overlay, choose Save visible for the current viewport. Drag over a region for a custom crop, or click an automatically highlighted page part when Firefox identifies one. These options are preferable when a long page would make a portfolio image unreadably small.
Firefox Developer Tools capture
Firefox Developer Tools can capture the entire page or an individual element. If the full-page screenshot icon is not shown, open Developer Tools settings and enable the screenshot control; captures are saved to your Downloads folder. Chrome: capture the full page in Device Mode
Chrome’s full-size capture is in DevTools rather than the normal page context menu. The labels can move between Chrome releases, so use DevTools’ command search if a menu item is missing.
Full-size page image
- Open the page in Chrome and press F12 or Ctrl+Shift+I on Windows/Linux (Command+Option+I on macOS) to open DevTools.
- Toggle Device Mode with the phone/tablet icon, or press Ctrl+Shift+M (Windows/Linux) or Command+Shift+M (macOS).
- Choose the desired device preset, or enter a custom width and height. Confirm that the page has reflowed to that viewport.
- Open the Device Mode More options menu (the three-dot menu in the device toolbar).
- Select Capture a full size screenshot. Chrome saves the resulting image through the normal download flow.
Chrome also offers Capture screenshot for only the visible viewport. If a device frame is displayed in Device Mode and you want it included, enable the frame before capturing; otherwise the output is the page image without the surrounding hardware illustration. Chrome’s Device Mode documentation covers these capture options.
Capture a selected area
- Open DevTools’ Command Menu with Ctrl+Shift+P on Windows/Linux or Command+Shift+P on macOS.
- Type screenshot.
- Choose Capture area screenshot.
- Drag across the page region you want and release to save it.
Chrome’s documentation notes that area capture does not work when DevTools is undocked. Dock DevTools to the browser window first, then repeat the command. See the Chrome DevTools Command Menu guide for the command-search workflow.
Make the screenshot honest and readable in your portfolio
Show context without overwhelming the reader
Pair a full-page image with one or two close-ups when important typography or interaction states become too small in the long capture. Add a short caption with the URL, capture date and viewport, such as “Homepage redesign, captured at 1440 × 900 on 29 September 2026.” If the page has changed since the work was done, say that it is an archive or historical snapshot.

Handle responsive work deliberately
Capture desktop and mobile separately rather than stretching one image. In Chrome Device Mode, select the relevant preset or enter exact dimensions. In Firefox, resize the browser before using Save visible, or use a full-page capture at the width that best demonstrates the layout. Keep the viewport information with each file so readers do not mistake a mobile composition for a desktop design.
Check privacy, ownership and endorsement language
Remove account details, email addresses, internal links and analytics overlays before publishing. Permission and copyright rules vary by site and jurisdiction. The W3C’s Intellectual Rights page says: “As long as the screenshot is not used in any manner that implies W3C sponsorship or endorsement of your product, service, or Internet site, no permission is required to use a screenshot.” That statement concerns screenshots of the W3C website; it is not a universal rule for every site. Check the site’s terms or ask the owner when rights are uncertain, and never imply sponsorship or endorsement that does not exist.

The full-page image is cut off
Confirm that you used Firefox Save full page or Chrome Capture a full size screenshot, not the visible-viewport command. Scroll through the page first to trigger lazy images. If a sticky header appears repeatedly, try hiding it with custom CSS in an automated capture or use a selected region for the section you need.
Images or fonts are missing
Wait for network activity to settle, reload without an ad blocker that may be removing required assets, and capture again. For repeatable jobs, wait for a specific selector or network idle rather than relying on a fixed short delay.

The automated response is not a usable image
Inspect the HTTP status and X-Page-Verdict/X-Billed headers. A bot check, blank page, timeout or failed load is identified as such and is not billed; correct authentication, headers, cookies, URL access or wait conditions before retrying.
Final pre-publication check
- The image scope matches the portfolio point you are making.
- Viewport, URL and capture date are recorded.
- No private data or misleading browser chrome remains.
- Long pages have been checked for missing, duplicated or clipped content.
- Captions distinguish live, archived, prototype and personal redesign work.
