In Java Edition, press F2 during gameplay. Press F1 first if you want to hide the HUD, and press F5 to change between first- and third-person views. Java screenshots are saved in the .minecraft/screenshots folder. Bedrock Edition uses the capture controls built into your device: Windows Game Bar on PC, the system shortcut on Mac, and the capture buttons on Xbox or Nintendo Switch.
Choose the method for your edition and device
Minecraft does not have one screenshot shortcut on every platform. Java Edition has an in-game command; Bedrock capture generally follows Windows, macOS, Xbox, Nintendo Switch or another host device.

Java Edition: take a clean in-game screenshot
Basic capture
- Load your world or join a server and put the camera where you want it.
- Press F2. Minecraft takes a screenshot from your point of view.
- Continue playing; the image is written to Java’s screenshots folder.
If you changed keyboard bindings, the screenshot key may no longer be F2. Check the controls configuration and use the key assigned to the screenshot action.
#1 Best Overall
- Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
- Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
- Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
Hide the HUD
Press F1 before pressing F2. F1 hides the heads-up display, including the crosshair and other on-screen interface elements. Press F1 again when you want the interface back.
Change the camera perspective
Press F5 to cycle through the available perspectives. Position the character in first person for a normal point-of-view image, or use a third-person view when you want the player avatar visible. Once the view is right, press F2.
Where Java screenshots are saved
Java creates a screenshots directory inside the Minecraft data folder. The location depends on your operating system:
- Windows:
%AppData%.minecraftscreenshots - macOS:
~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/screenshots - Linux:
~/.minecraft/screenshots
On Windows, paste the path into File Explorer’s address bar. On macOS or Linux, open your home folder and navigate to the listed Minecraft directory. If you use a launcher or installation arrangement that changes the game directory, look for the active instance’s .minecraft data folder rather than a different installation.
If the folder appears empty
- Take a new screenshot and wait for the capture to finish before closing the game.
- Confirm that you are checking the Java data directory, not a Bedrock or launcher-specific folder.
- Search for the newest image file after pressing F2; the filename is generated by Minecraft and may not match your world name.
Windows Bedrock: use Xbox Game Bar
- Start Minecraft Bedrock and display the scene you want to capture.
- Press Windows+G to open Xbox Game Bar.
- In the Capture widget, select the camera icon.
- Open the Windows capture gallery afterward to view or share the image.
The Minecraft screenshotting guide also lists Windows+Alt+PrtScn as a direct capture shortcut. This is a Windows capture, not Java’s F2 function, so it follows Windows’ storage and sharing behavior.

Improve the composition first
Before opening Game Bar, move the player to the desired location and adjust Minecraft’s visible interface using the controls available in your Bedrock version. The Windows capture records whatever is on screen; it does not automatically remove the HUD, chat or other overlays.
Mac: capture the screen or use Java’s in-game key
The platform guide lists Shift+Command+4 for a full-screen screenshot saved on the desktop. Start Minecraft, arrange the view, then use that shortcut and check the desktop for the image.
If you are playing Java Edition on a Mac, the in-game workflow remains preferable when you want Minecraft’s own screenshot file and viewpoint controls: press F1 to hide the HUD, F5 to select a perspective, and F2 to capture.

Xbox, Nintendo Switch and Realms
Xbox
Double-tap the Xbox button, then press Y. The resulting image is managed through the Xbox capture gallery, where you can review or share it.
Nintendo Switch
Press the dedicated screenshot button on the left Joy-Con. Open the Switch album to view the capture and send or edit it using the console’s sharing options.

Bedrock Realms
Bedrock Realms includes built-in screenshot support and sharing with friends on the Realm club. This is separate from Java’s F2 file workflow and is intended for captures made within the Realm experience.
PlayStation and mobile
The platform instructions available for this guide do not give a PlayStation or mobile key combination. Use the capture command supplied by your console or phone’s operating system, and check that device’s gallery after the capture. Do not expect F2 to work unless you are specifically running Java Edition with a keyboard.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsMake screenshots easier to use
Plan the shot
- Move away from menus and chat before capturing.
- Choose first person or third person with F5 in Java.
- Hide the HUD with F1 when you want an image without interface elements.
- Wait until a scene has finished loading so terrain and entities are visible.
Keep originals and share copies
Keep the original file in the Java screenshots folder or your platform gallery. Make resized or compressed copies for messaging and social sites so the original resolution remains available.
Remember the edition distinction
Java’s F2, F1 and F5 controls are in-game Java controls. Bedrock on Windows, Xbox, Switch and other devices generally relies on the host platform’s capture mechanism, with Realms adding its own sharing support.
Troubleshooting
F2 does nothing in Java
Verify that Minecraft has focus and that you are in gameplay rather than a separate launcher window. If controls were remapped, inspect the key-binding menu for the screenshot action. On a keyboard where function keys are shared with hardware controls, make sure the keystroke being sent is the F2 key Minecraft receives.
Rank #4
The screenshot contains the HUD
Press F1 before F2. F1 is the Java HUD toggle; changing perspective with F5 does not hide interface elements.

Use the operating-system paths above for Java. Windows Bedrock and console captures go to their platform galleries rather than Java’s .minecraft/screenshots directory. Mac system captures are saved on the desktop according to the platform guide.
Game Bar will not open
Make sure you are using the Windows Bedrock workflow and that Windows Game Bar is available on the PC. If the overlay does not appear, use the listed Windows+Alt+PrtScn shortcut or the screenshot function provided by Windows.
The result is a black, incomplete or mistimed image
Return to the game, wait for the scene to render, and capture again. A system screenshot records the current display; it cannot recover content that had not loaded or was covered by another window.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API, not a replacement for an in-game Java or Bedrock capture. It is useful when you need a rendered Minecraft-related web page—such as a public map, documentation page or server site—captured by one request. Before capture, it can accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers.

Best Value
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://minecraft.net -o shot.webp
Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://minecraft.net"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://minecraft.net' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo also provides an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients. Every plan includes its features; the Free plan provides 1,000 screenshots per month without a card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Sign up for the free ScreenshotNeo plan.
