For most WooCommerce stores, start with product images at least 800 × 800 pixels. That is WooCommerce’s practical baseline for single-product pages, catalog grids and thumbnails. If your theme displays products larger than that, upload a correspondingly larger original. For stores that also submit products to Google Merchant Center, an image around 1500 × 1500 pixels or larger is a useful target, subject to Google’s current limits.
There is no single WordPress-wide “best” size. Your theme controls the largest rendered image, crop behavior and responsive layout, so the right source file is the largest use you actually need—not an arbitrary number chosen in isolation.
The short answer: use 800 × 800 pixels as your WooCommerce baseline
WooCommerce recommends uploading product images that are at least 800 × 800 pixels. At that size, one source image can normally serve the main product image, catalog image and smaller thumbnail versions. Images with fine detail—such as jewelry, fabric texture, electronics ports or printed labels—may benefit from a larger source.
Think of 800 × 800 as a floor, not a universal maximum or a promise that every theme will display the image at exactly 800 pixels. A theme may render the main image at a different width, create its own crops, or use a block template instead of the classic Customizer.

Why the theme matters more than a universal number
Find the largest rendered product image
Inspect the product page at the widest desktop breakpoint, then check the shop or category grid, related products, cart and gallery on a phone. The largest displayed version determines whether your source has enough pixels. If a theme displays a 1,200-pixel-wide product image but the uploaded original is only 800 pixels wide, the browser must enlarge it and fine detail can look soft.
Check whether images are cropped
Two images with the same pixel dimensions can look very different when one is cropped to a square and the other preserves its original framing. WooCommerce supports thumbnail-cropping choices, while themes may apply additional CSS or template rules. A tall bottle, wide sofa or clothing photograph may lose important edges when forced into a square catalog crop.
Keep the source large enough for every use
WordPress creates derivative sizes for different contexts. Uploading one appropriately large original is safer than uploading separate tiny files for the catalog and product page. The system can reduce a sufficiently large source; it cannot restore detail that was never present.
Recommended sizes by storefront use

These are platform recommendations, not results from an independent performance study. WordPress’s guidance is to balance resolution, layout and file weight; the official material does not establish one universal byte-size cap or compression percentage for every store.
Square, portrait or landscape: which aspect ratio is best?
Square images are convenient for uniform grids, but they are not mandatory for every product. Use an aspect ratio that shows the complete product without excessive empty space, then confirm how your theme crops it.

- Square: useful when a catalog grid must align products consistently.
- Portrait: often better for apparel, bottles and tall packaging.
- Landscape: can preserve the shape of furniture, appliances and wide artwork.
If your catalog requires a uniform square, compose the source with enough padding that the theme’s crop does not cut off the product. Do not enlarge a small original merely to reach a square pixel count; that creates a larger blurry file.
How to configure image dimensions in classic WordPress themes
- Open Appearance → Customize → WooCommerce → Product Images.
- Review the single-product, catalog and thumbnail dimensions exposed by your theme.
- Compare those values with the largest image actually rendered on your product page.
- Adjust dimensions or crop settings if the theme’s layout requires it.
- Save the changes, then regenerate thumbnails before judging the result.
Controls vary by theme. WooCommerce’s Storefront examples include an 800 × 800 single-product display dimension, but that example is not a universal requirement for all themes.
Block themes use a different editing path
Some block themes hide the Customizer controls. In that case, open Appearance → Editor and inspect the relevant product template or template part. Look for the Product Image block and its sizing, aspect-ratio and crop settings. The exact labels depend on the active theme and WooCommerce version, so verify the rendered result rather than assuming a setting applies everywhere.

A WooCommerce image can look correct on your site and still fail a shopping-feed rule. Google Merchant Center recommends submitting the largest full-size image available and says images around 1500 × 1500 pixels or above can perform well across listing formats. Its current guidance also lists a maximum of 64 megapixels and 16 MB.
Google has announced a new 500 × 500 pixel minimum across product categories and marketing methods. Warnings began April 14, 2026, and enforcement is scheduled for January 31, 2027. This is a Merchant Center feed rule, not a WordPress media-library setting. Check Google’s live specification before relying on the date or limits because feed policies can change.

Fixing blurry WooCommerce product images
1. Check the uploaded original
Open the media item and confirm its intrinsic dimensions. Replacing an 800-pixel original with a larger, sharp source is necessary when the theme renders a larger image. Upscaling the existing file will not recreate missing detail.
2. Compare source and display dimensions
Use your browser’s inspection tools or the image’s displayed size to identify the largest rendered version. A source should not routinely be stretched beyond its native dimensions.
3. Inspect crop settings
Blur can be mistaken for a crop problem. Check whether the theme is using a hard crop, a different aspect ratio or a low-resolution derivative. Preserve the product’s useful framing where the design allows it.
4. Regenerate thumbnails
After replacing source files, changing image dimensions or activating a new theme, regenerate WooCommerce shop thumbnails. Old derivatives can remain in use until they are rebuilt.
5. Test every important layout
- Single-product page and zoom/gallery view
- Shop and category loops
- Related and upsell products
- Cart and mini-cart
- Desktop, tablet and mobile breakpoints
Resolution versus file weight
Larger dimensions preserve detail but increase storage, transfer and decoding work. Start from the largest rendered use, then export an efficient image in a format your theme and browser support. The official WordPress guidance does not define one universal compression level or kilobyte target, so judge the result using both visual inspection and your page-performance measurements.

Do not delete the high-resolution original merely to reduce the first upload. Keep a master source, create appropriately sized derivatives, and make sure the image URL used by the storefront is not an unnecessarily huge file.
Practical decision checklist
- Begin with an original of at least 800 × 800 pixels for a typical WooCommerce catalog.
- Choose a larger source when the theme’s main image is larger or the product contains fine detail.
- Match the aspect ratio to the product and verify the theme’s crop behavior.
- Inspect the product page, catalog, gallery, cart and mobile layouts.
- Regenerate thumbnails after dimension, crop or theme changes.
- If using Google Merchant Center, target about 1500 × 1500 pixels or more where practical and check the separate 64-megapixel and 16 MB limits.
- Recheck Google’s policy before January 31, 2027, when the announced 500 × 500 minimum is scheduled for enforcement.

The image is sharp in the media library but blurry on the product page
The theme is probably rendering a larger size or loading an old derivative. Compare intrinsic and rendered dimensions, upload a larger original if needed, and regenerate thumbnails.

A hard crop or forced aspect ratio is removing the edges. Change the crop setting, add suitable padding to the source, or use a product-specific ratio that the theme supports.

Only some products are blurry
Those originals may be smaller than the rest, or their derivatives may not have been rebuilt. Compare the affected files and regenerate thumbnails after correcting the source.
The Customizer has no product-image controls
You may be using a block theme. Open Appearance → Editor and inspect the product template or template part instead.
Google rejects an image that works in WooCommerce
Review the Merchant Center image-link rules independently. Confirm dimensions, the 64-megapixel maximum, the 16 MB maximum and any current policy changes; storefront settings do not override feed requirements.

Is 1200 × 1200 better than 800 × 800 for WooCommerce?
It can be useful when your theme renders images larger than 800 pixels or when the product needs extra detail, but it is not a universal WooCommerce requirement. Check the largest rendered use first.
Can I use different image sizes for different products?
Yes, provided each source is large enough for the largest context in which that product appears and the resulting crops remain intentional. Consistent aspect ratios may still be preferable for a tidy catalog.
Does WooCommerce automatically make thumbnails?
WooCommerce creates image uses and derivatives, but after changing dimensions, crop settings or themes you should regenerate thumbnails so existing products receive the new versions.
Should every product image be a square?
No. Square files simplify uniform grids, but portrait or landscape framing may show a product more accurately. Your theme’s crop behavior is the deciding factor.
