How to Take a Screenshot After a Page Finishes Loading in Chromium

A reliable Chromium screenshot waits for the content you need—not merely the end of navigation. Use Puppeteer selectors for dynamic pages or the headless CLI for a quick capture.

For a reliable Chromium screenshot, wait for the page’s required content—not just navigation—to be ready. In Puppeteer, combine page.goto() with a network-idle condition and, when needed, a selector for the element the screenshot must show. “Finished loading” depends on the page: network activity can stop before lazy or app-rendered content appears, while some sites keep background requests running indefinitely.

Choose what “finished loading” means for this page

There is no universal signal that proves every page is fully rendered. Match the wait condition to what the capture needs:

Readiness signal What it tells you When to use it Limitation
Navigation event The browser reached a navigation milestone. Simple pages whose important content arrives with the initial document. It does not prove that later JavaScript rendering, images, or application data are ready.
Network idle Network requests have been quiet for a defined interval. In Chrome for Developers’ Puppeteer example, networkidle0 means no requests for 500 ms (Chrome for Developers). Pages that load their main resources shortly after navigation. Persistent polling or analytics can prevent idleness; quiet network activity does not prove the target content is visible.
Required selector A particular DOM element exists. Pages where a known element indicates the content you need is present, including asynchronously rendered pages. The element can exist before its contents, images, or transitions are ready. Choose a meaningful selector.
Fixed timeout A specified amount of time has elapsed. As a bounded fallback when no dependable page signal is available. It is a guess: too short can capture early, and too long wastes time. It does not establish readiness.

A useful default is to wait for network idle and then for the specific content selector. If the site makes ongoing requests, use a selector that represents the needed content rather than relying on network quiet alone. For lazy-loaded sections, the relevant content may not appear until you scroll or otherwise trigger it; a selector wait only helps after the element can be rendered.

Take a readiness-based screenshot with Puppeteer

Puppeteer is a JavaScript browser-automation library whose documented uses include screenshots. Install it in a Node.js project, then save this as an ES module such as capture.mjs:

import puppeteer from 'puppeteer';

const url = process.argv[2];
if (!url) {
  throw new Error('Usage: node capture.mjs https://example.com');
}

const browser = await puppeteer.launch({ headless: true });
try {
  const page = await browser.newPage();
  await page.goto(url, { waitUntil: 'networkidle0' });
  await page.waitForSelector('#content-that-must-appear');
  await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
  await browser.close();
}
  1. Replace https://example.com with the page URL and #content-that-must-appear with a selector for content that must be visible.
  2. Install Puppeteer in the project using your package manager, then run node capture.mjs https://example.com.
  3. On success, the screenshot is written to page.png. The finally block closes Chromium even if navigation, the selector wait, or capture fails.

Puppeteer’s APIs can change between releases. Confirm the launch, navigation, wait, and screenshot options against the API reference for the version installed in your project: Puppeteer Page API.

Adjust the wait to the page

  • Main content arrives with navigation: try a navigation wait condition appropriate to the site, then verify the result visually or with a content selector.
  • Content renders after JavaScript: wait for a selector that appears only when the required content is available.
  • Network activity never settles: avoid making network idle the sole gate; use the content selector and, if necessary, a bounded timeout as a secondary measure.
  • Lazy-loaded content is below the fold: trigger the page behavior that loads it, such as scrolling to the relevant area, before capturing. A full-page screenshot does not by itself guarantee that off-screen lazy content has loaded.
  • Only a portion of the page matters: capture the relevant area or element using the installed Puppeteer version’s documented screenshot options.

Use Chromium’s headless command line for a one-off capture

For a simple shell task, Chrome’s headless command line can save a screenshot without a Puppeteer script. The official reference includes --screenshot and a --window-size example:

chrome --headless --screenshot=page.png --window-size=412,892 https://example.com

Replace chrome with the Chromium or Chrome executable name or path used on your system, and substitute the target URL. The window size sets the capture viewport; use dimensions suited to the page you need to inspect.

You can add --timeout with a value in milliseconds to cap how long the command waits before capturing. Chrome’s documentation says this maximum can expire even if the page is still loading, so a timeout is not evidence that a particular element or app state is ready. See the Chrome Headless command-line reference for the current flags and platform-specific invocation details.

Troubleshoot early, missing, or stalled captures

  • The screenshot misses content rendered by JavaScript: add a wait for a selector that identifies the rendered content; a navigation milestone alone may occur too soon.
  • The selector wait times out: verify the selector in the page’s actual DOM, confirm the content can load without interaction, and check whether the page is blocked or displaying an error instead.
  • Network-idle waiting stalls: the site may keep requests open or poll in the background. Wait for the specific content selector instead, optionally with a timeout so the script fails clearly rather than waiting forever.
  • The capture is blank or incomplete: check that navigation succeeded and the page did not show a bot check, error, or consent overlay. Choose a selector for the visible content and allow any necessary page-specific rendering to finish.
  • Images or sections are missing: they may load lazily. Trigger the relevant scroll or interaction before waiting for their elements and capturing.
  • The CLI captures before the desired state: increasing --timeout only gives the page more time; it does not verify readiness. Use Puppeteer when you need a selector-based condition.
  • The code rejects an option or behaves differently after an upgrade: check the API reference matching the installed Puppeteer version rather than assuming examples for another release remain exact.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request can return an image or PDF; the API options and response details are in the ScreenshotNeo documentation. For a basic screenshot, save this as shot.sh and run it after replacing the URL and API key:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo removes supported cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does network idle mean the page is fully loaded?

No. It indicates a period without network requests, not that every required element is visible or that lazy-loaded content has appeared.

Should I use Puppeteer or the Chromium command line?

Use the command line for a simple, bounded one-off capture; use Puppeteer when readiness depends on a selector or other page-specific logic.
