How to Take a Responsive Website Screenshot at iPhone SE Screen Size

Use a 375 × 667 CSS-pixel viewport for the 2nd/3rd-generation iPhone SE, or 320 × 568 for the original. Here’s how to capture it in Chrome or Safari and when to verify on a real iPhone.

For the iPhone SE (2nd or 3rd generation), set a portrait browser viewport to 375 × 667 CSS pixels. For the 1st-generation iPhone SE, use 320 × 568 CSS pixels. In Chrome DevTools, choose Responsive in the Device Toolbar, enter the dimensions, then use the toolbar’s screenshot command. These settings test page layout; desktop emulation is not identical to viewing the site on an actual iPhone.

Choose the right iPhone SE dimensions

The name “iPhone SE” covers two materially different screen sizes. Apple lists the 4.7-inch 2nd- and 3rd-generation models at 375 × 667 points, or 750 × 1334 physical pixels at 2×. The 1st-generation 4-inch model is 320 × 568 points, or 640 × 1136 pixels at 2×. Apple’s Human Interface Guidelines and App Store screenshot specifications distinguish these sizes.

For website layout testing, enter the point dimensions as the CSS viewport size: 375 × 667 for the newer SE size or 320 × 568 for the original. Set device pixel ratio (DPR) to 2 when you want a raster image at the corresponding 2× pixel dimensions. CSS viewport size controls responsive layout; DPR affects pixel density and output dimensions. If the requested deliverable is for a particular SE generation, confirm which one rather than assuming.

Capture the viewport in Chrome DevTools

  1. Open the page in Chrome, then open DevTools.
  2. Turn on the Device Toolbar and select Responsive.
  3. Enter 375 for width and 667 for height for the 2nd/3rd-generation SE size, or 320 and 568 for the 1st-generation size.
  4. Set the device pixel ratio to 2 if you need the corresponding 2× raster dimensions.
  5. Open the Device Toolbar’s More options menu and choose Capture screenshot. This saves the visible viewport.

Chrome’s Device Mode documentation explains custom viewport simulation and screenshot capture. Device Mode simulates a mobile experience on a desktop; it does not run the page on an actual iPhone.

Use Safari Responsive Design Mode on a Mac

  1. Enable Safari’s web developer features if they are not already enabled, then focus the page you want to test.
  2. Choose Develop > Enter Responsive Design Mode, or press Control-Command-R.
  3. Edit the viewport width and height to 375 × 667 or 320 × 568, depending on the SE generation you are targeting. Adjust pixel ratio if needed.
  4. Capture the displayed viewport using the Mac screenshot method appropriate for your deliverable.

Apple’s Responsive Design Mode documentation describes editable dimensions and pixel ratio. The mode’s device presets approximate screen sizes and do not reproduce every real-device condition; browser controls, keyboards and device-specific form behavior can change what a page looks like.

What emulation can—and cannot—tell you

A correctly sized emulated viewport is useful for checking breakpoints, content flow and many CSS layout issues. It is not proof that the page behaves exactly the same on an iPhone: both Apple and Google describe desktop-based device modes as simulations, and Apple recommends Simulator when device-specific rendering needs closer inspection. For important release checks, open the site in iOS Simulator or on the target phone.

If you need a screenshot from the actual iPhone rather than a desktop emulation, capture it on the device. Apple’s iPhone screenshot instructions also cover Full Page capture for an entire Safari webpage. That is a different deliverable from a fixed-size viewport screenshot.

Check the viewport if the page looks scaled or unusually narrow

When a page does not lay out as expected on iOS, inspect its viewport declaration. Apple’s archived Safari guidance recommends width=device-width for iOS web applications and explains its relationship to initial scale and viewport sizing. Because that guidance is archived, check current browser behavior rather than treating it as a guarantee for every site or iOS version: Configuring the Viewport.

Common problems and fixes

  • The screenshot is the wrong size. Confirm whether the target is the 1st-generation 320 × 568 viewport or the 2nd/3rd-generation 375 × 667 viewport. Also distinguish CSS dimensions from 2× raster dimensions: 375 × 667 at DPR 2 corresponds to 750 × 1334 pixels.
  • The page looks desktop-sized or scaled down. Check that the Device Toolbar is enabled and the custom viewport dimensions were entered in CSS pixels. On an iOS page, inspect its viewport declaration as well.
  • The image includes browser or simulator controls. Capture mode can affect whether browser or simulator chrome appears. Check the saved image’s dimensions and crop only if the deliverable requires a specific format.
  • The emulated result differs from an iPhone. Treat desktop device mode as a layout simulation. Recheck in iOS Simulator or on the target phone when the difference matters, especially for device-specific rendering or form behavior.
  • You need the entire page, not just what is visible. Chrome’s described command captures the visible viewport. For a full webpage, use an appropriate full-page capture workflow; on iPhone, Apple documents Full Page screenshots in Safari.
