Try soft light from a window or open shade, and compare a few camera heights rather than assuming one angle suits everyone. You can test all of this with the phone you already own.
Why moving the phone back can change how your face looks
A very close camera makes nearer features appear larger relative to features farther away. In a selfie, that can make the nose seem more prominent or shift the apparent proportions of the middle of the face. This is a perspective effect caused by the camera’s position; it is not evidence that your face looks that way in person.

A 2024 study in The Laryngoscope photographed 12 subjects at six distances using smartphone and full-frame cameras. Against its full-frame reference taken at 60 inches, the researchers reported 12%–19% increased vertical stretching of the midface in selected 24, 35, and 50 mm captures made at 8 inches. Smartphone captures showed an 18% increase at 8 inches and a 12% increase at 12 inches. These are results from that study’s sample and comparison setup, not a prediction for every phone, face, or selfie. Washington University’s study record provides the publication details.

A separate result concerns the nose specifically. A 2018 Rutgers University report described a Rutgers-Stanford mathematical model: compared with a photo taken from 5 feet, a selfie taken about 12 inches away made the modeled nasal base appear approximately 30% wider and the nasal tip 7% wider. Those figures come from the model, not from the 2024 study’s smartphone measurements. Rutgers assistant professor Boris Paskhover put the effect this way: “I want them to realize that when they take a selfie they are in essence looking into a portable funhouse mirror.” Rutgers’ report explains the model and its context.

How to adjust distance and framing
- Move the phone away from your face. Hold it farther out, use a selfie stick, or rest the phone on a stable support. The aim is to change the camera’s viewpoint, not to hit one magic distance.
- Restore your preferred composition. Crop the image afterward or, if your phone offers it, use a telephoto camera while standing farther back. A longer lens or zoom by itself does not undo perspective distortion if the camera stays in the same place; stepping back is the key change.
- Compare framing options. Take one picture with the front camera and another from farther away with the rear camera or telephoto option, keeping the light and camera height similar. Phone cameras differ, so there is no single zoom setting or focal length that works as a universal equivalent.
A photography course at CUNY New York City College of Technology gives the practical advice to step back and zoom in when using a cameraphone. Its portrait lesson also lists a tripod among the equipment for self-portraits. A selfie stick or phone tripod for a timer shot can make the farther position easier, but neither is required.
How to find an angle that suits you
There is no established universally best selfie angle. Camera height and framing affect how head and body proportions read; a wide-angle face near the edge of the frame can also appear more distorted. Start at eye level, then try slightly above and slightly below. Keep distance and light consistent so you can tell what the height change actually does.

Try a few images rather than judging from a single frame. Adobe recommends testing different angles and distances, including a position just above eye level. For a relaxed pose, you can angle your body slightly while keeping your face toward the camera, then gently move your chin forward and down. Treat that as an optional experiment, not a rule: facial structure, expression, intended style, and personal preference all matter. Adobe’s beginner portrait guide offers further suggestions.
How to use light for a softer-looking selfie
Try facing a window indoors or standing in open shade outside. Both are accessible ways to get softer light on your face. By contrast, harsh overhead sun can cast deep shadows under the eyes, nose, and chin. If you are outdoors in direct sun, find shade or turn so your face is oriented toward softer light. Golden-hour light is another option to test, not a guarantee of a particular look.

- Face a window and take a frame.
- Turn slightly or move back a step, then take another with the camera distance and height otherwise similar.
- Outdoors, compare open shade with direct overhead sun before deciding which result you prefer.
Adobe also suggests light reflected from nearby surfaces. Its advice is practical guidance rather than proof that one setup flatters everyone; the available sources do not establish a required ring light, flash, or color-temperature setting. If you edit, keep changes restrained: small adjustments to exposure, contrast, warmth, or sharpness can refine a photo without making it look overworked.

Change one thing at a time so the comparison is useful. Begin with two distances, keeping camera height and light similar. Then choose the distance you prefer and compare eye level with a slightly higher or lower position. Finally, keep that setup and test window light or open shade. Review the pictures side by side and choose the proportions, expression, and overall style you like—not a supposed universal standard.
