How to Take a Long Screenshot Online (Full-Page Capture Guide)

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To take a long screenshot of an entire webpage, use your browser’s built-in full-page capture: in Edge, open Screenshot and choose a full-page capture; in Firefox, choose Take Screenshot and then Save full page. These options capture content below the visible screen instead of only the current viewport. If the page is unusually long, interactive, authenticated, or loads content while scrolling, inspect the saved image and recapture after allowing the page to finish loading.

What a long screenshot captures

A normal screenshot records the pixels currently visible in a browser window. A long screenshot—also called a full-page, scrolling, or whole-page screenshot—stitches the page content that extends below the viewport into one image. It is useful for documenting an article, saving a receipt, reviewing a design, or sharing a page without sending several separate images.

Browser full-page tools are designed for webpage content. They are not guaranteed to capture an entire desktop application, a video frame, or a nested scrolling panel inside a webpage. If the content you need scrolls inside a box rather than with the document, you may need that application’s own export feature or several screenshots.

Microsoft Edge: capture the entire page

Fastest method

  1. Open the webpage in Edge and wait for the visible content to finish loading.
  2. Press Ctrl+Shift+S, or right-click an empty part of the page and choose Screenshot. You can also open Screenshot from Edge Settings.
  3. In the capture overlay, choose the option for a full-page capture rather than a selected area.
  4. Review the result, then choose Save to download it or Copy to place it on the clipboard.

Microsoft describes Edge Screenshot as able to capture a full webpage, including sections that require scrolling. The exact menu, shortcut, and availability can vary by device type, market, and Edge version. If the shortcut does nothing, use the right-click menu or Settings entry and check that Edge is up to date.

When Edge output needs checking

  • Scroll through pages that load images or text only when they approach the viewport, then run the capture again.
  • Look for duplicated, missing, or overlapping sections at the joins.
  • For a very long page, open the saved file separately before deleting the original or sharing it.

Firefox: use Save full page

Context-menu workflow

  1. Open the page in Firefox.
  2. Right-click an empty area and select Take Screenshot.
  3. Choose Save full page. Do not choose Save visible, which captures only the current viewport.
  4. Download the image or copy it to the clipboard from the screenshot controls.

Firefox supports Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows and Linux and Command+Shift+S on macOS as another way to open its screenshot tool. Labels can change slightly between Firefox releases, so look for the full-page choice if the shortcut opens a different panel.

Developer Tools alternative

  1. Open Firefox Developer Tools.
  2. Find the full-page screenshot camera icon. If it is missing, open Developer Tools settings and enable Take a screenshot of the entire page under Available Toolbox Buttons.
  3. Use the camera button to save the complete page.

Firefox’s Web Console also provides a :screenshot helper. The --fullpage option requests the complete page. The helper can additionally specify a delay, device-pixel ratio, filename, or CSS selector, which is useful when you need to wait for a component or capture one element rather than the document.

:screenshot --fullpage

Firefox documents that its Screenshots feature records interaction events such as using Copy or Save full page, but not the URL or details of the captured image. Its settings include controls for disabling that data collection. This statement applies to Firefox Screenshots and should not be generalized to unrelated extensions.

Chrome: extension route

The available documentation for this guide does not establish a current built-in Chrome user-interface workflow for full-page screenshots. Chrome users can install a dedicated extension instead. GoFullPage is listed in the Chrome Web Store; its listing includes version 8.7 dated August 11, 2026, along with earlier capture fixes and improvements. Treat it as an optional add-on, not a requirement, and review its current permissions and privacy details before installing.

  1. Install the extension from the Chrome Web Store.
  2. Open the target page and wait for it to load.
  3. Activate the extension from Chrome’s toolbar (use the puzzle-piece menu if its icon is hidden).
  4. Let the extension scroll and assemble the page, then inspect and export the resulting image or PDF using the controls it provides.

Extension interfaces and version numbers change. If a capture stops early, first test the page in a private window without other extensions, then check whether the page uses a login, infinite scrolling, a cookie wall, or a nested scroll container.

Pages that commonly produce imperfect captures

Lazy-loaded images and text

Some pages request media only as it comes near the viewport. A full-page command may not trigger every request in the same way a human scroll does. Scroll through the page once, wait for images to appear, and capture again. Open the final file at full size to verify that charts, photos, and code blocks are present.

Virtualized or infinite lists

News feeds, dashboards, and product grids may replace off-screen rows instead of keeping the complete document in the page. A browser screenshot can therefore capture only the currently rendered portion or stop at a practical limit. Export data from the application, use its print view, or capture several sections when a single image cannot represent the whole list.

Authentication and permission walls

Capture while signed in only if you are allowed to record and share the material. A login redirect, bot check, CAPTCHA, or expired session can result in a screenshot of the sign-in page rather than the content you expected.

  • Ultra-thin bezels: Maximize your viewing experience with thin bezels.

Sticky headers, animations, and popups

Fixed navigation bars may appear repeatedly, while animations can produce inconsistent frames. Dismiss consent dialogs and popups, pause moving content where possible, and recapture after the page is stable.

Extremely long documents

Very tall images can be difficult to open, edit, or send. Consider saving a PDF, using a print layout, or dividing the page into logical sections. If you need one image, verify dimensions and file size before uploading it to another service.

Choosing the right method

Method Best for Output and access Important caveat
Edge Screenshot Edge users who want a built-in tool Full-page or selected capture; copy or save Availability and behavior vary by device, market, and version
Firefox Save full page Firefox users needing a clear full-page/visible-area choice Download image or copy to clipboard Dynamic and lazy-loaded content still needs inspection
Firefox Developer Tools Users needing delay, selector, or device-pixel controls Full-page screenshot via camera button or :screenshot Requires Developer Tools and command familiarity
Chrome extension Chrome users who accept an add-on Extension-defined image/PDF export Permissions, UI, and capture behavior depend on the extension version

Quality and privacy checklist

  • Confirm that the address bar shows the intended page before capturing.
  • Close personal tabs, notifications, and overlays that should not appear in the image.
  • Scroll once when content is lazy-loaded, then wait for images and fonts.
  • Open the saved result and inspect the top, middle, bottom, and any important interactive section.
  • Check for private information, session identifiers, order numbers, or internal comments before sharing.
  • Use a descriptive filename with the page name and capture date.
  • Keep the original page available until the image has been backed up or delivered.

Troubleshooting

The full-page option is missing

Use the browser’s documented shortcut or right-click menu instead of the toolbar icon. In Firefox Developer Tools, enable Take a screenshot of the entire page under Available Toolbox Buttons. In Edge, try Settings if the context-menu entry is unavailable. Feature availability can differ by release and device.

The result contains only the visible screen

You selected a visible-area or selected-region mode. Reopen the tool and choose Save full page in Firefox or the full-page option in Edge. In Chrome, confirm that the extension completed its scrolling process rather than exporting an initial frame.

Images are blank or sections are missing

Reload without an obstructing popup, wait for network activity to finish, and scroll through the page before capturing. Disable content-blocking extensions temporarily if they prevent required resources from loading. For protected content, verify that your session has not expired.

The page repeats a header or overlaps sections

Sticky elements and animated layouts can confuse stitching. Hide or dismiss the element if the browser or extension allows it, stop animations, resize the window, and try again. If the layout remains unstable, capture smaller sections or use a print/PDF view.

The file is too large to open or send

Export a PDF when available, reduce image dimensions in an editor, or divide the page into chapters. Keep a full-resolution original and share a resized copy only when the detail remains readable.

ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Before capture it can accept the cookie or consent banner and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be disabled. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I capture a long screenshot of a page I do not own?

You can capture pages your browser can lawfully access, but check copyright, privacy, terms of use, and permission before redistributing the image.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I save a long webpage as an image or PDF?

Use an image when visual layout matters and a PDF when text selection, printing, or a smaller multi-page document is more useful.

Why does a nested panel not appear in my full-page screenshot?

Browser full-page tools capture the document, while an inner panel may have its own scrolling context. Use the panel’s export feature or capture that panel separately.
