To capture a WordPress page with wkhtmltoimage, run the command-line tool from a computer or server that can reach the page, choose an output format and viewport width, and save the result to an image file. WordPress does not provide a special screenshot mode for it: the renderer loads the page like a web document and creates the image. A basic PNG command is:
wkhtmltoimage --format png --width 1280 https://example.com/ page.pngReplace the example URL and adjust the width for the layout you need. Then inspect the resulting image: older Qt WebKit rendering can differ from a current browser, and a command completing successfully does not guarantee that every image or script has loaded.

What wkhtmltoimage does—and what “full website screenshot” means
wkhtmltoimage is a command-line renderer from the wkhtmltopdf project. The project describes it as a headless tool using Qt WebKit, so it can render without a desktop display service. It can take a URL or HTML input and produce an image; it is not a WordPress plugin or a setting inside the WordPress dashboard. See the upstream project and its usage documentation.
In this guide, a full-page capture means an image of the page’s document rather than just the initially visible viewport. The output is still a rendering at a chosen viewport width, not a pixel-for-pixel guarantee of what every visitor’s browser will show. The reviewed documentation does not establish one universally correct full-page command or width for WordPress sites.

Install and check the command-line tool
Install a wkhtmltoimage build suitable for the operating system where you will run it. The project documents downloading a precompiled binary or building from source. Since packaged builds can differ, confirm the installed binary and its available options before relying on a command in automation.

Read the options shown by the actual installed build; do not assume every package exposes identical behavior.
The upstream GitHub repository is archived, so check compatibility of the binary available for your platform before adopting it for a new production workflow. Do not assume a package is the latest or actively maintained merely because it is available from a distribution.
Capture a WordPress page as a PNG
Run the command on a machine that can access the page and its linked resources. For a public page, substitute its full URL and choose a width that suits the intended output:

wkhtmltoimage --format png --width 1280 https://example.com/ page.pngHere, --format png selects PNG output, --width 1280 sets the rendering viewport width, the URL is the page to load, and page.png is the output filename. The width of 1280 is an example, not a recommended universal setting. Use the width that matches the page layout or downstream use, then check whether the screenshot is clipped or rendered differently than expected.
The command-line documentation also describes an input HTML file as an option. If you use local HTML rather than a URL, the page’s linked files and local-file permissions matter; see the local-file guidance below.
Choose format, viewport and rendering options
Image format
The example explicitly requests PNG. The tool supports image output formats, but the exact formats available can depend on the build. Check the installed tool’s help and use an output extension that matches the selected format. The reviewed material does not establish a universal best format or quality setting for every use.
Viewport width
The viewport width can affect responsive layouts: a WordPress theme may rearrange navigation, columns, and images at different widths. Select a width deliberately and inspect the output instead of treating the command’s example value as a site standard.
JavaScript delay
The documented CLI enables JavaScript by default and sets its JavaScript delay to 200 milliseconds. If the page fills in content after scripts run, test a longer delay, such as:
wkhtmltoimage --format png --width 1280 --javascript-delay 1500 https://example.com/ page.pngA longer delay only makes the renderer wait; it does not prove that a particular application has finished rendering. Compare the image with the page in a browser and adjust only when the page’s behavior warrants it. The project’s release history says version 0.12.2.1 fixed an earlier issue where wkhtmltoimage ignored the JavaScript-delay and window-status options; that historical note does not establish identical behavior for every packaged binary. Local HTML and local files
If the input is an HTML file that references local stylesheets, fonts, or images, those files must be accessible to the renderer. The CLI documentation says local-file access is restricted unless allowed. Enable access only when necessary, and avoid broadly allowing local-file access for untrusted HTML. Consult the installed build’s help and the documented local-file controls for the exact option syntax.
Check access, authentication and page completeness
The renderer must be able to reach the URL from the machine running the command. A page available in your own browser may not be available from a server because of network restrictions, access controls, or login requirements. The official CLI documentation describes URL and file inputs and loading controls, but the reviewed sources do not establish a WordPress-specific authentication recipe. Do not place passwords or other credentials in a command that may be saved in shell history, logs, or scripts.

Content that appears only after JavaScript has had more time to run.
Compatibility limits to consider
wkhtmltoimage uses Qt WebKit, so its output should not be assumed to match current desktop or mobile browsers, particularly on themes relying on modern CSS. An archived issue opened in 2021 reports that display: flex did not affect output in a wkhtmltoimage 0.12.6 environment. That is a version-specific user report, not a universal compatibility test or a guaranteed workaround. Treat it as a reason to test your actual theme and page rather than as a complete browser-support matrix. See the upstream issue tracker.
If visual fidelity to a modern browser is essential, compare the rendered image against that browser and evaluate whether an older Qt WebKit renderer is appropriate for your page. The reviewed sources provide no current head-to-head benchmark against browser automation tools, so no general speed or fidelity ranking is established here.

The command is not found
The binary may not be installed or may not be on the current shell’s executable path. Confirm the installation location and run the binary by its full path, or correct the path configuration for the environment running the job.

The URL cannot be opened
Check that the URL is reachable from the capture machine, including any network access controls. Verify the URL is correct and that the page does not require a login or other access the command has not been given.
The image is blank or content is missing
Check the output at full size, then verify that linked resources are reachable and scripts have enough time to render the page. Test a longer --javascript-delay for pages with delayed content; waiting is not a guarantee of completion.

The layout differs from a current browser
Test the same URL at the intended width and compare the result with a current browser. Qt WebKit may not reproduce modern CSS behavior; the 2021 report about flex layout in a 0.12.6 environment is illustrative, not a universal diagnosis. If the theme depends on features that render incorrectly, this tool may not suit that capture.
Local images or stylesheets do not load
Confirm the paths are valid from the HTML file’s location and that the installed tool’s local-file access rules permit the required resources. Do not enable broad local-file access for untrusted input.

Check the installed binary’s version and help output, then test a capture with a longer delay. The release history documents a fix in 0.12.2.1 for a historical option-handling issue, but behavior still depends on the actual build and page.

No. It is a separate command-line renderer that loads a WordPress page by URL or HTML input.
Does the sample command guarantee a full-page image?
No. The width is an example, and you should inspect the output to verify the content and layout you need.
