How to Take a Full-Page Screenshot in Firefox

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Firefox’s built-in Screenshot tool: open the page, right-click an empty area and choose Take Screenshot (or press Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows/Linux or Command+Shift+S on macOS). Select Save full page, then choose Download or Copy. You do not need an extension for this basic workflow.

Take a full-page screenshot in Firefox

  1. Open the webpage you want to capture in Firefox and wait for the content you need to appear.
  2. Right-click an empty part of the page and select Take Screenshot. If the context menu is inconvenient, use Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows or Linux, or Command+Shift+S on macOS.
  3. In the screenshot controls, select Save full page. Firefox will prepare an image of the page beyond the currently visible viewport.
  4. Choose Download to save a PNG in Firefox’s normal download location, or choose Copy to place the image on your clipboard.
  5. Press Esc, or use the close control, if you opened the tool but no longer want to capture anything.

Firefox also offers Ctrl+S or Command+S for downloading and Ctrl+C or Command+C for copying while the screenshot interface is active. The labels and placement can change slightly between Firefox releases; Mozilla’s current support guide, updated June 15, 2026, is the reference for the documented interface.

Choose the capture area you actually need

A full-page image is only one of Firefox’s capture modes. Select the scope before saving so you do not end up with a needlessly tall file or a cropped result.

Option What it captures When to use it
Save full page The page from top to bottom, including content outside the current viewport. Long articles, documentation, landing pages and complete records.
Save visible Only the portion currently visible in the browser window. A quick view, a dialog, or a short section that fits on screen.
Select a region A rectangle you draw yourself. One chart, paragraph, card or other small area.
Select an element An automatically highlighted page element. A specific component when drawing a rectangle would include unwanted content.

“Save full page” is different from a normal operating-system screenshot: it is designed to include the page’s scrollable length rather than just the pixels visible at one moment.

Download the image or copy it directly

Download a file

Choose Download in the screenshot interface. Firefox saves the image as a PNG in the folder configured under Settings → General → Files and Applications → Downloads (the exact settings wording can vary by release). If you cannot find it, open Firefox’s downloads list and use its folder or show-in-folder control.

Copy to the clipboard

Choose Copy when you want to paste the capture into an email, document, image editor or chat without creating a file first. Switch to the destination application and paste normally. Clipboard contents can be replaced by the next copy operation, so download the image if you need a durable copy.

Cancel safely

Press Esc or select the close control to leave the screenshot UI. Canceling before Download or Copy does not create an image file.

Add a Screenshot button to Firefox’s toolbar

If you capture pages regularly, add a toolbar button instead of opening the context menu each time:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the Firefox menu.
  2. Choose More Tools → Customize Toolbar.
  3. Find the Screenshot item and drag it to the toolbar.
  4. Select Done.

Selecting the new button opens the same capture choices, including Save full page, Save visible, a custom region and an automatically highlighted element.

When a full-page capture does not look right

The built-in tool is straightforward, but the page itself can make a result appear incomplete or different from what you see while scrolling. Use these checks before assuming Firefox is broken.

The Take Screenshot command is missing

  • Click a normal webpage area rather than a browser control, an embedded frame with its own menu, or a form control, then right-click again.
  • Try the platform shortcut: Ctrl+Shift+S for Windows/Linux or Command+Shift+S for macOS.
  • Open More Tools → Customize Toolbar and add the Screenshot item if you prefer a visible button.
  • Update Firefox if the command and shortcut are both absent. Menu labels can differ in older or organization-managed builds.

The result contains only the viewport

  • Confirm that you selected Save full page, not Save visible.
  • Run the capture again after the page has finished loading. A page that is still changing can produce a different image from the one you expected.
  • Check that you are not capturing an embedded document separately from the main page. Right-clicking inside an embedded frame may expose a different context menu.

Images or sections appear blank

  • Wait for the page’s own loading indicators, then reopen the screenshot tool.
  • Scroll through the page once before capturing if its images appear only after scrolling. This can trigger a site’s own lazy-loading behavior, but Firefox’s screenshot controls do not provide a guarantee for every script-driven page.
  • For content that requires a login, permission, a network connection or a user action, verify those conditions in the page before you capture.

The shortcut does nothing

  • Use the menu command or toolbar button to determine whether the issue is limited to the keyboard shortcut.
  • Check for another application or an enterprise keyboard policy intercepting the key combination.
  • On macOS, use Command+Shift+S; on Windows and Linux, use Ctrl+Shift+S.

The image is difficult to use

  • A very long page naturally creates a tall image. Consider Save visible, a region, or an element when a complete page is not required.
  • Use an image editor after downloading if you need to crop, annotate or resize the result. Firefox’s documented screenshot workflow focuses on capture, download and clipboard copy.
  • If you need a repeatable file name or automated delivery, use an API workflow instead of manual downloads.

Privacy and reliability considerations

A screenshot records whatever is rendered in the page, including account names, private messages, order details and tokens displayed on screen. Review the image before sharing it, especially when using Copy and pasting into a public channel. A screenshot is also a static rendering: links, menus and forms in the saved PNG are not interactive.

For an audit trail, keep the original URL and capture date with the image. If the page can change, save a fresh capture rather than assuming an old image still represents the current content. Firefox’s support documentation describes the capture controls but does not promise a universal rendering result for every site, script or embedded frame.

Or skip the browser setup: ScreenshotNeo API

For scheduled jobs, many URLs or server-side workflows, ScreenshotNeo returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF from one GET request. Before capture it accepts the cookie or consent banner like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing, and every response reports the page verdict and billing status in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.

See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for authentication, options and response details. This cURL example captures Stripe and writes the returned image to shot.webp:

Firefox or an API?

Need Best fit Reason
One page immediately from your desktop Firefox Screenshot No setup beyond Firefox; choose Save full page and Download or Copy.
Repeatable captures in code or CI ScreenshotNeo A single HTTP request, explicit response headers and automation options.
Many URLs at once ScreenshotNeo Bulk capture supports up to 100 URLs per call.
AI-agent workflow ScreenshotNeo MCP server Dedicated screenshot, page-info and PDF tools for MCP clients.
Ad hoc selection of a visible region Firefox Screenshot Built-in region and element selection are immediately available.

For a single manual capture, Firefox is the shortest path. For recurring, server-side or high-volume work, the API avoids maintaining browser automation and exposes controls that the built-in tool does not.

What Mozilla’s documentation confirms

Mozilla Support says Firefox can capture visible parts of webpages or full webpages and copy or save those images. Its documented controls are the source for the Save full page, Save visible, region, element, Download, Copy, shortcut and toolbar-customization steps above. A Mozilla Support forum question from October 24, 2024 uses “scrolling screenshot” language, but it is reader context rather than evidence that an add-on is required; Firefox’s built-in feature covers the basic full-page task.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where does Firefox put a downloaded full-page screenshot?

It uses the download folder configured in Firefox’s Settings under General, Files and Applications. Open the downloads list if you need to reveal the exact file location.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I capture only one part of a long page instead of the entire page?

Yes. Open Take Screenshot and choose Save visible, draw a custom region, or select an automatically highlighted page element.

Do I need a scrolling-screenshot extension for this?

No extension is required for Firefox’s documented full-page workflow. The built-in Take Screenshot tool includes Save full page.
