How to Take a Full-Page Screenshot in Chrome Using DevTools

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Chrome can capture an entire webpage, including content outside the visible window, with DevTools’ Capture full size screenshot command. It is not a Console command: use the DevTools Command Menu to take the screenshot, and use the Console if you want to inspect the page’s dimensions or state first.

Take a full-page screenshot in Chrome

This workflow is for Chrome on desktop. It uses Chrome’s built-in DevTools; you do not need an extension or a physical screenshot device. Chrome’s DevTools documentation describes the result as a screenshot of the whole page, including content that is not currently visible in the viewport.

  1. Open the webpage you want to capture in Chrome and wait for the parts you need to appear.
  2. Open DevTools. Press F12 or Ctrl+Shift+I on Windows or Linux; on macOS, press Command+Option+I.
  3. Open the DevTools Command Menu with Ctrl+Shift+P on Windows or Linux, or Command+Shift+P on macOS. This is separate from the webpage’s JavaScript Console.
  4. Type Capture full size screenshot in the menu and select that command.
  5. Chrome captures the full page and downloads a PNG. Open the downloaded file and inspect the top, middle, and bottom before using it.

Chrome’s documented action is named Capture full size screenshot. If the menu does not show it, check that the DevTools Command Menu—not the Console prompt or the browser’s address bar—is open, then search the full command name.

What the Console can—and cannot—do

The Console is useful for checking page geometry before taking a screenshot. It can report the visible viewport dimensions and the document’s full scroll dimensions. Open DevTools, choose the Console tab, paste this expression, and press Enter:

({
  viewportWidth: window.innerWidth,
  viewportHeight: window.innerHeight,
  documentWidth: document.documentElement.scrollWidth,
  documentHeight: document.documentElement.scrollHeight
})

The result is an object containing pixel dimensions. If documentWidth is greater than viewportWidth, the page is wider than the visible viewport and may have horizontal overflow. If documentHeight is much larger than viewportHeight, the page extends substantially below the visible area. These measurements help you anticipate what to inspect; they do not create or download an image.

The official Chrome documentation cited for this workflow describes the DevTools screenshot command, not a normal-page Console command that directly exports a screenshot PNG. So, if your goal is to save an image manually, use the Command Menu action. If your goal is to automate captures, use headless Chrome or the DevTools Protocol instead.

Prepare pages with lazy loading or dynamic content

A full-page capture can include the whole document without guaranteeing that every part of the page has finished rendering in the state you expect. Pages may load images as you scroll, reveal content after interaction, or update in response to time or network activity. For a more useful capture, let the page settle and inspect the output rather than assuming that every off-screen element was ready.

  • Lazy-loaded images: Scroll through the page before capturing if important images appear only when their section approaches the viewport. Wait for them to load, return to the top if needed, then take the full-size screenshot.
  • Expandable sections: Open the menus, accordions, or tabs you want included. A screenshot records the rendered page state; it does not decide which hidden interface elements you intended to show.
  • Fixed headers or overlays: Check whether a sticky header, cookie banner, or other fixed element covers content in the resulting image. The official documentation does not promise identical results for every layout.
  • Embedded frames: Inspect areas rendered inside embedded content separately. A full-page capture should not be treated as a guarantee that every frame or external resource rendered as expected.
  • Unusually tall pages: Use the Console dimensions to spot very large documents, then inspect the downloaded PNG at several points. A single long image can be awkward to view or share, even when capture succeeds.

For a repeatable result, capture the same URL only after it reaches the same meaningful state—for example, after a report finishes loading or after the required section has been expanded. The exact wait time depends on the page; Chrome’s manual screenshot steps do not define one universal settling delay.

Automate capture with headless Chrome

For a command-line screenshot, Chrome’s headless mode supports --screenshot. A basic capture looks like this:

chrome --headless --screenshot --window-size=412,892 https://example.com

This saves a file named screenshot.png in the current working directory. The example sets the browser window size to 412 by 892 pixels; choose dimensions suited to the page and the viewport you need to reproduce. A command-line capture is useful in a script or test workflow, but it is not the same interaction as the manual DevTools full-size command.

Chrome’s Headless reference also documents --timeout for waiting before capture and --virtual-time-budget for time-dependent pages. The reference was last updated on 2024-10-21 UTC; check the current Chrome documentation for exact option behavior in the version you run. A fixed wait can help with known delays, but it is not proof that every network request or dynamic element has completed.

Choose headless mode when

  • You need a script or build process to invoke Chrome rather than manually save a screenshot.
  • You can control the Chrome installation and the output file location.
  • You want to specify a window size or wait behavior for a repeatable capture.

For pages with lazy loading or interaction-driven content, account for those behaviors in the script or test setup and inspect the result. The supplied Chrome references do not promise that every site will render identically under headless capture.

Use the DevTools Protocol for programmatic control

For browser automation or a test harness that needs to receive image data, Chrome’s DevTools Protocol provides the Page.captureScreenshot method. Set captureBeyondViewport to true to request capture beyond the visible viewport. The method returns base64-encoded image data, which your automation code must handle and save as an image file.

This is a protocol-level route, not a line to paste into the webpage Console. Your automation needs to communicate with a Chrome session through the DevTools Protocol, call the method in the appropriate page context, and decode the returned base64 data. The workflow is therefore more involved than the Command Menu, but it is suited to scripts that need to decide when to capture and where to store the result.

Do not treat captureBeyondViewport as a promise that the page has finished loading or that lazy content has appeared. Decide how your automation determines readiness, then verify captures for pages with dynamic content, embedded frames, sticky elements, or exceptional height.

Which Chrome capture method should you use?

Method Best fit What it gives you Main consideration
DevTools Command Menu A one-off manual full-page capture A downloaded full-size PNG Run Capture full size screenshot; the Console is not the export action.
Console geometry expression Checking page size or overflow before capture Viewport and document width and height values It reports dimensions; it does not save a screenshot.
Headless Chrome CLI Command-line or scripted capture A screenshot file from --screenshot Set the viewport and plan how to handle waiting and dynamic content.
DevTools Protocol Browser automation and test harnesses Base64 image data from Page.captureScreenshot Connect to Chrome, call the method, and decode the returned data.

Troubleshoot a missing or incomplete screenshot

The command does not appear

Make sure DevTools is open and invoke its Command Menu with the platform shortcut. Search for Capture full size screenshot in that menu. Typing into the Console or the webpage address bar will not run the DevTools screenshot command.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The image is blank or missing sections

Check the page itself before capture. Wait for the relevant content, scroll to trigger lazy-loaded sections, and expand anything that should be visible. Then capture again and inspect the downloaded PNG. For automated captures, review the wait or readiness logic; headless Chrome’s timeout options are available, but a delay alone may not resolve interaction-driven content.

The screenshot is wider than expected

Run the Console expression and compare documentWidth with viewportWidth. A larger document width points to horizontal overflow or wide content. If your automation uses a window-size setting, verify that the chosen dimensions match the intended capture. The geometry check identifies the mismatch; it does not modify the page layout.

The page is very tall or hard to review

Check documentHeight and inspect the saved image in sections. For a very long document, consider whether one full-length image is actually the right deliverable, or whether a PDF or a set of smaller captures would be easier to use. Chrome’s DevTools workflow described here downloads a PNG.

The automated image is not repeatable

Make the page state consistent before capture: wait for expected content, use the same viewport, and trigger the same interactions. If content changes according to elapsed time, Chrome’s headless reference documents virtual-time and timeout options. Those options do not remove the need to verify the page’s actual rendered state.
