Use headless browsers for unattended automation in CI, containers, servers, and scheduled jobs. Use headful browsers when you are developing tests, inspecting a page, or need to watch a failure happen. A practical setup keeps both options available: run the normal pipeline headless, save enough diagnostics to investigate failures, and rerun a small reproduction headed when seeing the browser will help.
Headless means the browser runs without a visible window; headful (also called headed) means the browser displays its UI. The choice is not simply “fast versus slow” or “real browser versus fake browser”: modern Chrome’s headless mode shares its implementation with headful Chrome, while some tools also offer a separate headless-shell binary.
What changes between headless and headful?
The primary difference is visibility. In headless mode, the browser runs without showing a browser window. In headful mode, the window is visible, so you can watch navigation, clicks, and rendering as they happen.
Both modes can load web pages and run automation. Headless is convenient when no one needs to interact with or observe a desktop. Headful is useful when a person needs to inspect the page or follow an automation step by step. The exact browser binary matters too: “headless” can refer to modern Chrome headless or, in some configurations, a separate shell with a narrower feature set.

Which mode should you choose?

These are defaults, not guarantees that a test will behave identically in every environment. Keep the browser version or channel, viewport, fonts, dependencies, and user context consistent when comparing runs.
Does headless Chrome behave like headful Chrome?
For modern Chrome, Google describes headless and headful as unified modes using the same browser implementation. Since Chrome 132, the older headless implementation is available as a separate chrome-headless-shell binary. That distinction is important: a result from a shell binary should not automatically be treated as evidence about modern Chrome headless.
Playwright documents a similar practical distinction. Its standard Chromium installation uses a separate Chromium headless shell for headless operation; selecting the chromium channel uses the real Chrome browser for its new headless mode. If fidelity to Chrome is the priority, choose the modern Chrome path deliberately rather than assuming every option called “headless” uses the same binary.

Even with a unified implementation, headful and headless test environments can differ in more than the mode flag. Display configuration, graphics, installed fonts, browser channel, permissions, extensions, viewport, and stored session state can all affect what a test sees. When a test passes in one mode and fails in the other, compare those conditions before attributing the cause to visibility alone.
Is headless faster or lighter?
There is no broadly applicable official percentage for how much faster or lower-memory headless execution is than headful execution. Headless avoids managing a visible desktop window, which can simplify operations, but real performance depends on the workload, browser binary, machine, and CI setup. Measure the exact configuration you plan to run.
Puppeteer describes headless: 'shell' as a performance-oriented option when the complete Chrome feature set is unnecessary. That is a narrower choice than modern headless Chrome. Use it only if its feature trade-offs suit your tests and measurements show a useful benefit; do not assume a shell result predicts modern Chrome behavior.

How to switch modes in Playwright
Playwright launches browsers headless by default. Set headless: false when you want a visible browser window. The following Node.js example assumes Playwright is installed in the project and uses its Chromium browser.

Inspect a test while it runs
Playwright’s debugging tools let you slow down actions, open the Inspector, and enable API logging. For example, add a launch slow-motion delay and run the test with the Inspector:

})();Run a Playwright test with DEBUG=pw:api to log API calls. These tools are useful during development; they do not replace running the final suite under the same headless settings and browser channel as CI.
How to switch modes in Puppeteer
Puppeteer also defaults to headless execution. Set headless: false to show Chrome. This standalone Node.js example opens a page, prints its title, and closes the browser:

How to run headed browsers in CI
Headless is generally simpler for unattended CI because it does not require a visible desktop. Playwright’s CI guidance notes that headed Linux execution requires Xvfb, a virtual display server. If you need a visible-mode CI run, make the display setup an explicit part of the runner rather than expecting a desktop to exist.
- Keep the standard job headless. This is the normal path for a repeatable, unattended suite.
- Save diagnostics from failures. Retain traces, screenshots, video, console output, and network logs where your test setup supports them.
- Rerun a small reproducer headed. Use the same browser channel, viewport, dependencies, and user context as the failing run. On Linux, provide Xvfb for headed execution.
- Change one variable at a time. If the reproduction differs, compare browser binary, fonts, graphics, permissions, extensions, viewport, and state before changing the test.
Why a test may pass headed but fail headless
A mode-specific failure is a clue to investigate, not proof that one mode is inherently unreliable. A visible run may have a different display size, installed fonts, graphics configuration, timing, permissions, or persistent profile than the CI run. A test may also depend on an element being visible or clickable in a particular viewport.
- Compare the viewport and rendered layout. Set an explicit viewport and capture a screenshot or trace from the failing run.
- Check fonts and browser channel. Ensure the runner has the expected dependencies and that local and CI runs use the same browser build.
- Inspect timing and network behavior. Use traces and logs to see whether the page, selector, or request was ready when the action ran.
- Check permissions and user state. Reproduce with the same cookies, authentication, permissions, and profile assumptions.
- Use the visible browser as a diagnostic, not as a substitute for CI validation. Once understood, confirm the fix in the actual headless pipeline.

Practical operating pattern
- Develop and inspect tests headed when visibility helps you understand what the browser is doing.
- Run routine CI automation headless, using the browser mode and channel you intend to support.
- On failure, preserve artifacts and rerun the smallest case headed with comparable environment settings.
- Choose modern Chrome headless when Chrome fidelity matters; consider the shell only when its feature limits are acceptable and measured throughput justifies it.
- Benchmark your own workload before making speed or capacity decisions.
