Windows 11 users no longer need to rely on iTunes for everyday iPhone management. Apple’s newer Apple Devices app is designed for modern Windows PCs, giving you a dedicated place to sync content, back up your iPhone, update software, restore the device, and manage trusted connections.

Syncing with the Apple Devices app works through a USB connection and lets you choose what to copy between your PC and iPhone, including music, movies, TV shows, photos, files, and other supported content. Before you begin, it helps to know the setup requirements, how to approve the connection, and where each sync option appears in the app.

This guide walks through the full process on Windows 11, from installing the Apple Devices app and connecting your iPhone to selecting sync categories, starting a sync, disconnecting safely, and resolving common issues when the app does not detect your device or syncing fails.

What You Need Before Syncing Your iPhone

Before you connect your iPhone to a Windows 11 PC, make sure your setup matches how Apple now handles device management on Windows. On modern Windows PCs, the Apple Devices app is used for syncing, backups, restores, and software updates for iPhone and iPad. It replaces the device-management parts of iTunes, while music, TV, and podcast playback are handled separately through Apple Music, Apple TV, and other apps where available.

  • [What You Get] : 2Pack 3FT newly USB C to Lightning Cables (White). A Cable for Life, lifetime warranty and 24*7 friendly customer support service ensures that you have a pleasant shopping experience.

You will need a PC running Windows 11, an iPhone with a working Lightning or USB-C port, and a reliable cable that supports data transfer. Some charging-only cables can power the phone but will not let Windows detect it properly, so use the cable that came with your iPhone or a certified replacement. If your PC has only USB-A ports and your iPhone cable is USB-C, use a quality adapter or a different compatible cable.

Basic requirements

  • Windows 11: Install the latest system updates from Settings > Windows Update to reduce driver and connection issues.
  • Apple Devices app: Download it from the Microsoft Store. This is the main app used to manage iPhone syncing on Windows 11.
  • Apple account: Use the Apple account connected to your iPhone if you plan to access purchased media, iCloud-related settings, or protected content.
  • Unlocked iPhone: Your phone must be unlocked the first time you connect it so you can approve the computer.
  • Data-capable USB cable: Use a cable that can transfer files, not just charge the device.
  • Enough storage: Check available space on both the iPhone and the PC, especially if you plan to sync large photo, video, or music libraries.

If you previously used iTunes on the same Windows PC, be aware that Apple Devices changes the workflow. Once Apple Devices is installed, iTunes is no longer used for iPhone sync and device backups on supported Windows setups. You may still see separate Apple apps for media, but iPhone management should happen inside Apple Devices. Keeping old and new Apple apps installed side by side can sometimes create confusion, so open Apple Devices directly when you want to manage the phone.

It also helps to decide what kind of sync you want before you begin. You can use the app to sync selected content from the PC to the iPhone, create local backups, restore a backup, update iOS, or manage general device settings. If you already use iCloud Photos, iCloud Drive, Apple Music, or other cloud-based services, some content may already sync automatically through your Apple account. In that case, avoid selecting duplicate local sync options unless you specifically want copies from the Windows PC transferred onto the iPhone.

Item to check What to do
Windows updates Install pending updates and restart the PC before connecting the iPhone.
iPhone passcode Unlock the iPhone and keep it awake during the first connection.
Trust prompt Tap Trust This Computer when prompted on the iPhone.
USB cable Use a known data cable and connect directly to the PC when possible.

How to Install and Set Up the Apple Devices App

The Apple Devices app is Microsoft Store software for managing an iPhone, iPad, or iPod on Windows 11. On modern Windows PCs, it replaces the device management parts of iTunes, including local backups, restores, updates, and USB syncing. After you install it, iTunes is no longer used for iPhone syncing on that PC, though Apple Music and Apple TV are separate apps for media playback and purchases.

To install it, open the Microsoft Store from the Start menu, search for Apple Devices, and select the app published by Apple Inc.. Choose Get or Install, then wait for Windows to download and install it. You can also install it from the Store listing in a web browser, but the Microsoft Store app still handles the actual installation. If the install button is missing or fails, check that Windows 11 is fully updated and that you are signed in with a Microsoft account allowed to install Store apps.

Once installed, launch Apple Devices from the Start menu. The first time it opens, the app may ask you to accept Apple’s software terms. Read the prompt and select Agree to continue. Windows may also install or activate Apple support components needed for device communication, such as drivers used when an iPhone is connected over USB. Let this complete before plugging in your phone if the app is still setting itself up.

Apple USB-C to Lightning Cable (1 m): Fast and Convenient Charging, Lightning to USB-C or Thunderbolt 3
  • DESIGNED BY APPLE — Ideal for charging, syncing, and transferring data, this 1-meter cable has a USB-C connector on one end and a Lightning connector on the other.
  • FAST AND CONVENIENT CHARGING — Use this cable with your Apple 18W, 20W, 29W, 30W, 61W, 87W, or 96W USB‑C Power Adapter to charge your iOS device and even take advantage of the fast-charging feature on select iPhone models.
  • WHAT’S IN THE BOX — Apple USB-C to Lightning Cable (1 m) only. Power adapter sold separately.
  • CABLE LENGTH — 1 meter (3 feet).

Initial setup checklist

  • Install from the Microsoft Store: Avoid third-party download sites, since device drivers and updates should come through Apple’s official Store package.
  • Update Windows 11: Go to Settings > Windows Update and install pending updates, especially if the app does not detect your iPhone later.
  • Use compatible Apple apps together: If you also want Apple Music or Apple TV on Windows, install those separately from the Microsoft Store.
  • Close iTunes if it is open: The Apple Devices app handles iPhone management, so having iTunes running can create confusion during setup.

If iTunes is already installed, you may see a message explaining that Apple Devices now manages connected Apple devices. This is expected on newer Windows setups. You do not need to remove iTunes immediately unless you are troubleshooting, but for day-to-day iPhone syncing you should open Apple Devices, not iTunes. If you use iTunes for podcasts, audiobooks, or older media workflows, check what content is still managed there before uninstalling it.

Before connecting your iPhone, make sure the app opens to its main device screen or a waiting state that asks you to connect a device. Keep your iPhone unlocked nearby, because the next step will require you to trust the Windows PC from the phone. If you plan to sync a large music library, photos, or make an encrypted backup, confirm that your PC has enough free storage and that you are using a reliable USB cable rather than a charge-only cable.

How to Connect Your iPhone to Windows 11

After installing the Apple Devices app, connect your iPhone to your Windows 11 PC with a USB cable first. Use a reliable Lightning-to-USB or USB-C cable, depending on your iPhone model and the ports on your computer. If possible, connect directly to the PC rather than through a hub, monitor, dock, or keyboard port, especially for the first setup. A direct wired connection gives Windows and the Apple Devices app the best chance to detect the iPhone correctly.

Unlock your iPhone before or immediately after plugging it in. If a prompt appears on the iPhone asking whether to trust this computer, tap Trust, then enter your iPhone passcode. This trust step is required before Windows can access device information, backups, photos, music, movies, TV shows, or other sync settings through the Apple Devices app. If you tap Don’t Trust by mistake, disconnect the cable, reconnect the iPhone, and watch for the prompt again.

  1. Open the Apple Devices app from the Windows 11 Start menu.
  2. Connect your iPhone to the PC using a compatible USB cable.
  3. Unlock the iPhone and respond to any Trust This Computer? prompt.
  4. Wait for the iPhone to appear in the Apple Devices sidebar or main window.
  5. Select your iPhone to view its management screen, including sync, backup, update, and restore options.

The first connection can take a little longer while Windows loads the required Apple device components. You may see brief activity in Windows notifications, Device Manager, or the Apple Devices app before the iPhone appears. Once detected, the app should show your iPhone name, storage information, software version, battery level, and categories for content syncing. This is the modern replacement for managing an iPhone in iTunes on Windows 11; iTunes is no longer the primary tool for device sync on current Windows PCs when the Apple Devices app is installed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If your iPhone does not show up, keep the phone unlocked and check the cable connection. Try a different USB port, avoid charge-only cables, and restart both the iPhone and the Windows PC if detection fails. You can also unplug the iPhone, close Apple Devices, reopen the app, and connect again. If Windows asks what to do with the device, you do not need to choose an AutoPlay action for syncing; the Apple Devices app handles the connection once the iPhone is trusted and recognized.

How to Choose What Content to Sync

After your iPhone appears in the Apple Devices app, select it from the sidebar to open the device management screen. This is where the app takes over the role that iTunes used to handle on Windows: backups, updates, restores, and local syncing. The main content categories are usually organized into sections such as Music, Movies, TV Shows, Photos, Files, and general device settings. The exact options you see depend on what is stored on your PC, which Apple apps you have installed, and which iCloud features are enabled on your iPhone.

Before turning on a sync category, check whether that same content is already managed through iCloud or another cloud service. For example, if iCloud Photos is enabled on your iPhone, photo syncing from the Apple Devices app may be unavailable or unnecessary. Similarly, if you use Apple Music with Sync Library, local music syncing may conflict with your cloud music library settings. The Apple Devices app is best for content stored directly on your Windows 11 PC that you want copied to your iPhone over USB.

Common sync categories

  • Music: Choose whether to sync your entire music library or selected artists, albums, genres, and playlists. This is useful for MP3s or imported albums stored locally on your PC.
  • Movies and TV Shows: Sync compatible video files from your local library to the iPhone for offline viewing. Large videos can take time to transfer and may use significant iPhone storage.
  • Photos: Select a folder on your Windows 11 PC and sync all photos inside it, or choose specific subfolders if the option is available. This creates a local photo sync relationship between that folder and your iPhone.
  • Files: Copy documents into apps that support file sharing. For example, you may be able to add PDFs, project files, media files, or app-specific documents to compatible iPhone apps.

To configure a category, open its section, enable the sync checkbox, then choose whether to sync everything in that category or only selected items. If you are managing storage carefully, selected syncing is usually the better option. A few playlists, photo folders, or videos are easier to control than a full library, especially on iPhones with limited free space. You can check available storage in the device overview before applying changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Be careful when changing photo or media sync sources. If your iPhone was previously synced with a different computer or folder, the Apple Devices app may remove older synced items before adding the new selection. This does not usually delete photos taken with the iPhone camera, iCloud Photos, or purchased items, but it can remove media that was copied from another PC. Review the selections shown in the app before continuing.

  1. Select your iPhone in the Apple Devices app.
  2. Open a content category such as Music, Photos, or Files.
  3. Enable syncing for that category.
  4. Choose all content or only selected items.
  5. Review the estimated storage impact if shown.
  6. Click Apply or Sync when you are ready to transfer the chosen content.

How to Start, Monitor, and Safely Disconnect a Sync

After you have selected the content you want to sync in the Apple Devices app, start the transfer from the device screen. With your iPhone connected and selected in the app sidebar, review the tabs you changed, such as Music, Movies, TV Shows, Photos, Files, or General. If you see an Apply button, click it first to save your new sync settings. If the settings are already saved, click Sync to begin updating the iPhone with the selected content from your Windows 11 PC.

The Apple Devices app shows sync activity in the main window while the process is running. You may see status text such as preparing to sync, copying items, backing up, or waiting for changes to be applied. Keep the iPhone unlocked if Windows or iOS asks you to confirm trust, enter your passcode, or allow access. For the most reliable transfer, leave the USB cable connected, keep the Apple Devices app open, and avoid restarting either device until the sync finishes.

What happens during the sync

  • Settings are applied: The app saves the sync choices you made for each content category.
  • Existing synced content may be updated: Items removed from your selected folders, playlists, or libraries may also be removed from the iPhone if they were originally synced from this PC.
  • New content is copied: Selected music, videos, photos, or files are transferred to the iPhone.
  • A backup may run: If you have configured local backups, the app may back up the iPhone before or during the sync process.

Do not unplug the iPhone just because the screen appears idle. Large photo libraries, long videos, and first-time syncs can take several minutes or longer, especially over slower USB ports. If Windows 11 dims the display or locks the PC, the sync may continue, but it is safer to keep the computer awake during large transfers. You can temporarily adjust power settings or plug in a laptop to prevent sleep from interrupting the process.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When the sync is complete, the app will stop showing active progress and the Sync button will become available again. Before disconnecting, check that there are no remaining progress messages in the Apple Devices app and that Windows is not still accessing the iPhone. Then click the eject icon next to your iPhone in the Apple Devices sidebar, if shown. Once the device disappears from the app or is marked safe to remove, unplug the USB cable from the iPhone and the PC.

Safe disconnect checklist

  1. Wait for the sync status to finish in the Apple Devices app.
  2. Confirm the Apply or Sync button is no longer showing an active operation.
  3. Use the eject control next to the iPhone when available.
  4. Unplug the cable only after the app has finished communicating with the device.

If you need to stop a sync before it finishes, look for a cancel or stop control in the Apple Devices app and wait for the app to return to an idle state before unplugging. Disconnecting during a transfer can leave some content only partially updated, requiring another sync to clean up missing files, duplicate entries, or incomplete photo and video transfers.

How to Fix Common Apple Devices Sync Problems

If your iPhone is not syncing correctly in the Apple Devices app on Windows 11, start with the basics: unlock your iPhone, keep it on the Home Screen, and check for the Trust This Computer prompt. Tap Trust and enter your iPhone passcode if asked. The Apple Devices app cannot fully access the phone until this trust relationship is approved. If you previously tapped Don’t Trust, reconnect the iPhone and look for the prompt again, or reset it on the iPhone by going to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Location & Privacy.

When the iPhone does not appear in the Apple Devices app, try a different USB port and use a reliable USB-C or Lightning cable that supports data transfer, not just charging. Avoid connecting through a hub or dock during troubleshooting. Close the Apple Devices app, disconnect the iPhone, restart both the PC and the iPhone, then reconnect. Also make sure Windows 11 is up to date and that the Apple Devices app is updated through the Microsoft Store. On modern Windows PCs, Apple Devices replaces iTunes for iPhone backup, restore, update, and sync tasks, so running old iTunes components at the same time can sometimes cause conflicts.

  • Sync button is unavailable: Make sure at least one content category is selected for syncing, such as music, movies, TV shows, photos, or files. Some content may be managed through iCloud instead and will not sync manually from Windows.
  • Music or videos do not copy: Confirm that the files are stored locally on the PC and are in formats supported by the iPhone. Content from streaming subscriptions or protected sources may not transfer through manual sync.
  • Photos are missing after sync: Check the selected photo folder in the Apple Devices app. If iCloud Photos is enabled on the iPhone, manual photo syncing from Windows may be limited or unavailable.
  • Sync stops or freezes: Keep the iPhone unlocked, disable battery saver on the PC temporarily, and do not disconnect the cable while the progress indicator is active.

If backups fail, check available storage on both the iPhone and the Windows PC. A local encrypted backup can be large, especially if the iPhone contains many photos, videos, app documents, and messages. If the app reports that it cannot back up the iPhone, free space on the Windows drive, reconnect the device, and try again. For encrypted backups, keep the password somewhere safe; without it, you cannot restore from that backup later.

For repeated detection or driver-related problems, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps in Windows 11 and repair or reset the Apple Devices app if those options are available. You can also uninstall and reinstall it from the Microsoft Store. After reinstalling, reconnect the iPhone directly to the PC and approve the trust prompt again. If the device still is not recognized, test the same cable and iPhone on another computer if possible. This helps separate a Windows app issue from a cable, port, or iPhone hardware problem.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I still need iTunes to sync my iPhone on Windows 11?

No. On modern Windows 11 PCs, the Apple Devices app handles iPhone syncing, backups, restores, and software updates. If you install Apple Music or Apple TV, iTunes is no longer used for device management, though older PCs may still rely on iTunes if the new apps are not installed.

What can I sync with the Apple Devices app?

You can sync music, movies, TV shows, photos, files, contacts, calendars, and other supported content depending on what is stored on your PC and which Apple apps you use. Some content, such as iCloud Photos, Apple Music library items, or iCloud contacts, may already sync through iCloud instead of a USB sync. In those cases, the Apple Devices app may show fewer manual sync choices.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

My iPhone does not appear in the Apple Devices app. What should I check?

Use a data-capable USB cable, unlock the iPhone, and tap “Trust This Computer” if prompted. Try a different USB port, restart both devices, and make sure the Apple Devices app is updated from the Microsoft Store. If it still does not appear, uninstall and reinstall Apple Devices, then reconnect the iPhone after Windows finishes detecting it.

Can I sync my iPhone over Wi-Fi instead of using a USB cable?

Yes, but you usually need to connect the iPhone by USB first and enable Wi-Fi syncing in the Apple Devices app. After that, the iPhone and PC must be on the same Wi-Fi network, and the Apple Devices app may need to be open for the device to appear. USB is still the more reliable option for large transfers, backups, and software updates.

Will syncing with the Apple Devices app erase anything from my iPhone?

It can remove content if you change sync settings or switch the iPhone from syncing with another computer. The app will usually warn you before replacing synced music, photos, or other media. Before changing sync sources, make a backup and confirm which libraries, folders, or playlists are selected.

Bottom Line

The Apple Devices app is now the main way to manage and sync an iPhone on Windows 11, replacing much of what iTunes used to do for device backups, updates, restores, and local content syncing. Once you install the app, connect your iPhone, trust the computer, and choose your sync settings, the process is straightforward.

If syncing fails, start with the basics: update Windows, iOS, and the Apple Devices app, check your USB cable, restart both devices, and make sure your iPhone is unlocked and trusted. After everything is set up, use the app whenever you want to back up your iPhone, manage media, or keep selected files and content in sync with your PC.
