To sync pictures between an iPhone and iPad, sign in to the same Apple Account on both devices and turn on iCloud Photos on each: Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Photos > Sync this device. Open Photos on the iPad and give the library time to upload and download.
Turn on iCloud Photos on both devices
- On your iPhone: Open Settings, tap your name, then iCloud > Photos. Turn on Sync this iPhone (the label may use the device name).
- On your iPad: Use the same path and turn on Sync this iPad. Both devices must be signed in to the same Apple Account. Apple’s iCloud Photos setup guide provides the current steps.
- Open the Photos app on the iPad. Items already in iCloud Photos should become available there, and new photos upload automatically.
For a large library, keep the devices connected to Wi-Fi and power while the first upload and download runs. Apple says the time depends on library size and internet speed; check Photos’ sync status instead of assuming a delay means setup failed.

Check sync status if pictures are taking a while
In the current Photos interface, open Collections and tap the profile button. The status beneath the account name or photo count can show whether syncing is active, paused, or limited by storage. Older iOS versions may show status from Library or All Photos. Follow the labels shown on your installed version of iOS or iPadOS. See Apple’s iCloud Photos troubleshooting steps.

Choose how originals use iPad storage
iCloud Photos uses both iCloud capacity and device capacity. On a device’s Photos settings, choose the storage option that fits how you use that device:

| Option | What stays on the device | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Optimize Storage | Space-saving versions; full-resolution originals remain in iCloud and can be downloaded when needed. | When you want to reduce local storage use. |
| Download and Keep Originals | Full-size originals are kept on the device. | When you want originals available locally and have enough device storage. |
Apple’s regional setup page states that iCloud includes 5 GB of free storage. If the library exceeds available iCloud space, uploads may stop until you free space or change your storage plan. The allowance and available plans can change; see Apple’s iCloud Photos setup page for current details.
Understand what syncing changes—and what it does not
Edits appear across devices
Edits made in Photos on one device update across the others. Apple says the originals remain stored in iCloud, so edits can be reverted. Apple’s iPhone user guide describes this as: “Changes you make on one device change on your other devices too.”

- The nation's leading retailer of organization products helps you save space and valuable time...and who couldn't use a little more of that?
- 3 ways to shop: visit a store, phone and online.
- Redeem online and in-store.
- No returns and no refunds on gift cards.
Deletions appear across devices too
Deleting a photo or video from one device using iCloud Photos deletes it from the synced library on the others. If you delete something accidentally, you can recover it from Recently Deleted for 30 days; after that, Apple says it is permanently deleted. Do not delete an item expecting to keep it in iCloud while removing it only from one synced device. See Apple’s iCloud Photos deletion guidance.
Sync is not a separate backup
Apple says iCloud Photos items are not duplicated in iCloud Backup. If you need an independent backup copy, keep one separately rather than treating a synced library as a second copy.

Troubleshoot missing or paused pictures
- Verify the account and setting: Check that both devices use the same Apple Account and that Sync this device is on under Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Photos.
- Give the library time: Connect to Wi-Fi and power, then check Photos’ status. Apple suggests leaving devices overnight when a sync is taking a long time.
- Check iCloud storage: A full account can pause uploads. A Shared Library owner’s storage limit can also affect syncing.
- Check the selected library view: An item moved to a Shared Library will not appear in Personal Library. Switch the Photos library view to look for it.
- Look for upload issues: If only some items are missing, check for an Unable to Upload album. Apple lists supported types including HEIF, JPEG, RAW, PNG, GIF, TIFF, HEVC, MP4, and special iPhone and iPad formats.
Apple specifically advises against turning iCloud Photos off as a first attempt to restart a stalled sync. Read the status and address the indicated account, network, storage, or library-view issue first. More detail is available in Apple’s troubleshooting guide.
