Wait for the last-synced date and time to update. That one action pulls in new purchases and refreshes your reading position, notes and highlights from Amazon’s servers.
This guide covers the Kindle app only. Apple Books is a separate app with its own library, so its iCloud settings won’t sync Kindle titles.

Sync manually in the Kindle app
- Make sure the iPhone has a working internet connection (Wi-Fi or cellular).
- Open the Kindle app.
- Tap More in the navigation bar.
- Tap Sync now.
- Check that the last-synced date and time have changed.
You don’t need a Kindle e-reader for any of this. Everything happens in the app and your Amazon account.
Check that automatic sync is on
Amazon says sync is on by default for Kindle apps and devices, and it needs an internet connection. To confirm it on your iPhone, go to More > Settings (gear icon) > Sync.

- Light and compact - With adjustable brightness, high contrast ratio, and fast page turns.
- Effortless reading in any light - Read comfortably with a 6“ glare-free display, adjustable front light—now 25% brighter at max setting—and dark mode.

- Read for a while - Get up to 6 weeks of battery life on a single charge.
- Take your library with you – 16 GB storage holds thousands of books.
The account-level switch is on Amazon’s website, under Manage Your Content and Devices > Preferences > Sync Settings. Amazon describes sync as saving your reading position, notes and highlights to its servers. Any Kindle app or device linked to the same account can then use them. If it’s turned off at either level, your position and annotations won’t follow you between devices.
If a book or update is missing

5. Update, remove and re-download
Update the Kindle app, and update the book if an update is offered. If the title still misbehaves, remove its download from the iPhone, sync, and download it again.
Amazon’s library-troubleshooting page also mentions restarting a Kindle device. That applies to e-readers, so you can skip it for the iPhone app.

Ebook sync versus Whispersync for Voice
Ordinary sync covers your library and reading data: position, notes and highlights. Whispersync for Voice is the separate feature that keeps an ebook and its audiobook in step. Amazon Customer Service states: “Whispersync for Voice automatically syncs your audiobooks with eBooks if you own or borrow both versions.”
If switching between the two formats isn’t working, Amazon recommends checking these:
- Wireless connectivity.
- The account-wide Sync Settings.
- The sync option in the app or device.
- That the app, device and book version are up to date.
- As a last step, removing the book download, syncing, and downloading it again.
You must own or borrow both versions, and the title has to support the feature.

| Where purchases live | Your Amazon account | Your Apple Account |
| Where sync is controlled | Kindle app More > Settings > Sync and Amazon’s Sync Settings | iCloud Drive and Books must be enabled in Apple settings |

Apple’s instructions say to use the same Apple Account on each device. Kindle books follow your Amazon account instead.
