To sync handwritten notes from an E Ink notebook, turn on the notebook’s own sync feature and use the same account on the devices you want to connect. The exact result depends on the brand: sync may back up notes, let you view them on another compatible device, or show them in a companion app. It does not necessarily let you edit the same native notebook across brands or in every phone or desktop app.
First decide what “sync” needs to do
Before changing settings, identify the content and the destination. A standalone notebook, handwriting added to a book or PDF, and an exported file may each use different sync controls.

- Cloud backup: Keep a copy associated with your account in case you lose or reset the device.
- Second-device access: Open the notebook on another compatible E Ink device.
- Phone or computer access: View notes through a vendor app or website.
- Continued editing: Work on the same native notebook away from the E Ink device. Do not assume that viewing or backup includes this capability.
- Portable copy: Export a PDF, image, text document, or other file for storage or sharing. An export is separate from live notebook sync.

reMarkable: use the account and companion apps
Sign in to the same reMarkable account on the tablet and mobile or desktop apps, then connect the tablet to Wi-Fi. reMarkable says changes made on any platform sync when connected to Wi-Fi, and its cloud pairs tablet files with the apps as a backup. See reMarkable’s pairing and file guidance.

There is a documented inactivity limitation: without Connect, files that have not been opened and synced for more than 50 days stop syncing to mobile and desktop apps. Check reMarkable’s sync troubleshooting guidance and current subscription terms for details. If sync fails, check the tablet’s Cloud setting > Check sync, confirm the file appears in the app, and consider the listed causes: outdated software or a weak, unstable, or incompatible internet connection.

For a separate copy, reMarkable documents exporting from desktop as PDF, PNG, or SVG, and uploading files from the tablet to Google Drive, Dropbox, or OneDrive. These options provide files outside the native synced notebook workflow; an exported copy should not be treated as a second live-editing notebook.
Kindle Scribe: sync is not universal Kindle-app notebook access
Connect the Scribe to the internet and make sure Sync is on. Amazon says notebooks are backed up to the cloud when Sync is enabled. Its documentation scopes access to handwritten annotations across devices to Kindle Scribe devices; highlights and text-based annotations are accessible across Kindle surfaces after syncing. It does not establish that handwritten notebooks can be edited in every Kindle app or opened on every Kindle model. See Amazon’s Kindle sync guidance.

- All-new Kindle Scribe – Features an 11” glare-free display with front light, built-in notebook, AI tools, and support for popular cloud services.
- Get a pen-on-paper feel – The textured surface and responsive display create a smooth, paper-like writing experience. Plus, the included pen never needs charging and has a built-in eraser and shortcut button for tools like the highlighter.
- More room to read, write, and think – At just 5.4mm thin and 400g light, it’s redesigned for comfort, with a larger 11" display and 40% faster writing and page turns.
- Work comfortably in any light – The display automatically adapts brightness to your lighting conditions. Adjust the warmth for greater comfort at night.
- Get more out of your notes – Take notes in the built-in notebook, then use AI to find information, ask questions about what you’ve written, and generate summaries. You can also clean up handwriting or convert it to text.
Amazon also documents sharing a notebook by sending a download link by email; the link is available for seven days. A searchable PDF option is documented for Scribe models released in 2025 or later. Treat either as a shareable or exported copy, not as evidence of continuous two-way editing in a phone or desktop app. Details are in Amazon’s notebook sharing guidance.

Kobo: enable notebook sync on compatible eReaders
Kobo notebook sync is for notebooks accessed on several eReaders signed in to the same account. The receiving eReader needs stylus support to view notebook files. On the eReader, open Home > More > Syncing and updates and enable Sync My Notebooks. Automatic sync is a separate option, and Kobo lets you select a time of day. See Kobo’s notebook backup instructions.

Kobo says notebooks are saved on the eReader and Kobo.com by default, but warns that signing out or resetting the eReader can lose notebooks and annotations. Sync regularly and verify that backup is enabled before signing out or resetting.
For files outside the Kobo notebook sync system, Kobo supports export to Dropbox or a computer. Advanced notebooks can export as Word (.docx), text, HTML, or ZIP; Basic notebooks can export as PNG, JPEG, PDF, or ZIP. Kobo also documents USB transfer of .nebo files between certain Kobo eReaders. These are export or transfer options, not evidence of general live notebook editing in a phone app. See Kobo’s export and transfer instructions.

Handwriting or annotations attached to reading documents use separate reading-data sync. BOOX’s guidance calls for the same account and server, plus the same files in the same directory on each device. Firmware V4.1 documentation adds an option to upload the source document with its reading data, with a 200 MB per-document limit. That instruction is firmware-specific, so check your device’s current firmware and menus rather than assuming the option is present. See BOOX’s reading-data sync guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshoot missing notes without risking the original
- Identify the content type. Check whether the missing item is a standalone notebook, an annotation on a book or PDF, or an exported file. These may have separate sync settings.
- Check connection and account. Confirm internet access and sign in to the same account on each intended device. For BOOX, verify the server selection as well.
- Check the relevant sync control. Turn on Kindle Sync, Kobo’s Sync My Notebooks, BOOX note or reading-data sync, or reMarkable cloud sync as appropriate.
- Trigger or allow a sync. Use a manual sync option if available, then give the upload and download time to finish. Check the companion app, website, or second device for the notebook.
- Check software and vendor guidance. Update device software where appropriate and follow the brand’s troubleshooting steps. For BOOX reading annotations, confirm that the same document is in the same directory on each device.
- Protect valuable notes before signing out or resetting. Kobo warns that either action can lose notebooks and annotations. Export important notes before taking a step that could remove local content.
Keep an export as well as cloud sync
Cloud sync and a portable export solve different problems. Sync keeps a vendor-managed copy or makes notes available through supported devices and apps; an export gives you a separate file you can store or share. Choose a format that suits the purpose: PDF or images for a readable snapshot, or text or Word when the vendor offers those formats and you need text-based use. Exporting may not preserve the original notebook’s editability or structure.
Feature availability can vary by device generation, firmware, region or server, and subscription. The vendor help pages describe their own supported workflows; they do not establish universal cross-brand notebook transfer or independently verify sync reliability or privacy performance.
