How to Sync Chrome Bookmarks, Passwords, and Settings Across Windows and Android

Use one Google Account in Chrome on Windows and Android, then select the bookmarks, passwords, settings, history, and tabs you want synced.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To see the same Chrome bookmarks, saved passwords, and preferences on a Windows PC and Android phone, sign in to Chrome on both with the same Google Account and select the information you want saved. Signing in to a Google website alone is not the same as signing in to Chrome, and history and open tabs are separate sync choices.

1. Set up Chrome sync on Windows

  1. Open Chrome and sign in with the Google Account you plan to use on your Android phone. You can sign in when you first use Chrome or later through Chrome settings. Google explains what becomes available across devices in its Chrome sync guide.

  2. Open More > Settings > You and Google, select the account, and choose what to save in your Google Account. Check the selected data types rather than assuming everything is included. History and tabs have a separate control.

  3. If you created bookmarks or other information while signed out, open the Chrome profile menu and use Save items in account to choose what to add.

3. Check that the right data is syncing

On each device, confirm that Chrome shows the intended Google Account and that the data types you want are selected. Bookmarks, passwords, and preferences can be available across signed-in devices, but history and open tabs depend on their own sync setting. If a particular item does not appear, check that item’s sync selection on both devices before changing or deleting data.

4. Fix common sync problems

Chrome says sync is paused

If Chrome asks you to verify your identity after you sign out of a Google service, complete the verification and sign in again. Google recommends this as the first step for paused sync; see Google’s Chrome sync troubleshooting guide.

Sync turns off when desktop Chrome closes

For this specific symptom, Google recommends checking whether on-device site data is allowed: open Settings > Privacy and security > Site Settings > Additional content settings > On-device site data, then allow sites to save data. This setting is not a universal fix for every sync error.

The problem continues

Use Google’s troubleshooting guidance for the error you see. Avoid deleting Chrome sync data as an initial troubleshooting step: the documentation does not establish one recovery procedure that applies to every sync failure.

5. Understand the passphrase and privacy choices

A custom sync passphrase is optional. Google says it encrypts Chrome data in your Google Account so Google cannot read that data. You must enter it on new devices and on devices already signed in. Payment methods and addresses from Google Wallet are not encrypted by this passphrase. With a custom passphrase, saved passwords cannot be checked at passwords.google.com, and history sync has limitations. Google also states that information sent to it is encrypted in transit; that statement is not a substitute for your account security choices. See Google’s sync and passphrase guidance.

Take particular care before changing or resetting a passphrase: Google warns that doing so deletes the data encrypted by it from its servers and signs you out of devices. If you need to keep saved passwords, export them before resetting the passphrase, following Google’s password and passphrase instructions.

Google says Chrome history saved in your Google Account may be used to personalize other Google services when Web & App Activity includes Chrome history. You can review or manage that activity in your Google Account; Google describes the setting in its Web & App Activity help.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Keep a separate bookmark backup

Sync makes selected information available through your account; an exported bookmark file is a separate backup or migration option. In Chrome on your computer, export bookmarks as an HTML file, then use Chrome’s import instructions to select that file on the browser where you want them. Google’s help page states a limit of 100,000 bookmarks per account (Google Chrome Help, year not stated; accessed 2026). See Chrome bookmark import and export instructions and the Chrome sync guide.

Labels and account differences

Google’s current help pages do not specify a Chrome release number or publication date, and menu labels may shift as Chrome updates. Managed accounts and regional settings may also differ. If your account is managed by work or school, available settings may not match a personal account.
