Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSync the entire Obsidian vault with one sync method, and keep Atlas VTT’s atlas-vtt folder and your attachments in their expected locations. On the second device, wait for syncing to finish, then check a scene and a few important links before editing. Obsidian’s own links and Atlas’s scene links have different rules, so use the right move method for the change you’re making.
What needs to sync
An Obsidian vault is a folder containing your notes and an .obsidian configuration folder. Atlas stores its data in an atlas-vtt folder inside that vault, with collection folders beneath atlas-vtt/collections. Sync the vault as a whole rather than selecting only Markdown notes; otherwise, Atlas data or files linked from notes may be left behind. See Obsidian’s vault and sync model and Atlas’s file and collection guide.

Attachments are files too. Obsidian can save them at the vault root, in a chosen folder, or in a location relative to the current note. Keep the configured attachment location within the synced vault so images and other embedded files travel with the notes that use them. See Obsidian’s attachment guidance.
Choose one sync method
Obsidian documents two broad approaches: its app-managed Obsidian Sync remote vault, or a file-based service that monitors a folder and copies files between local vaults. Choose one for a given vault. Obsidian warns that syncing the same vault through multiple services can cause conflicts or corruption; in particular, do not put a local vault connected to Obsidian Sync inside a third-party sync folder. Compare the approaches in Obsidian’s vault types guide and sync options overview.

| Approach | How it works | Practical consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Obsidian Sync | Connect local vault copies to an Obsidian remote vault. | Obsidian documents conflict handling for this service. Do not also manage that same vault with a file-based sync service. |
| File-based sync service | The service monitors folders and copies files between local vaults. | Keep each vault in the service’s monitored folder. The reviewed documentation does not certify every provider, device pair, or configuration for Atlas behavior, so verify your own copy. |
| Git | Obsidian describes Git as a sync approach. | Push and pull are manual, according to Obsidian’s sync overview; it is not automatic background syncing. |
Whichever method you select, syncing is not a substitute for an independent backup. Make a backup before changing sync providers or vault locations, or before a large batch of file moves. Obsidian also warns that symlinks may not work well with sync tools and can put data at risk; see its symlink guidance. Avoid using symlinks as a shortcut for sharing vault contents.
Set up the vault on your devices
- Confirm the complete local vault. Check that the campaign is one folder and that
atlas-vttis inside it. Also locate the attachment folder configured in Obsidian so you know it will be included. - Pick one sync mechanism. For Obsidian Sync, connect each local vault copy to the remote vault. For a file-based service, place each local vault in its monitored folder. Do not run both against the same vault.
- Let the first device finish syncing. Wait before opening or editing the campaign on another device. Obsidian identifies changes to the same file on multiple devices before they sync—particularly after offline work—as a cause of conflicts. Its conflict guidance explains the issue.
- Check the second copy before relying on it. Once syncing has completed, confirm that
atlas-vttand representative collection files arrived. Open a representative scene and follow a few important Obsidian links. This is a practical verification step based on the documented file layout, not a guarantee that every sync provider and platform combination has been tested.
Move files without confusing the two link systems
Renaming or moving a file within the vault
For an ordinary rename or move using Obsidian’s file explorer, keep Obsidian’s automatic internal-link updating enabled. Obsidian can update its own internal links when a file is renamed. Atlas separately says it follows files renamed or moved in Obsidian’s file explorer and keeps scenes working. Its guide states: “You can rename and move these files in Obsidian’s file explorer. Atlas follows the change and keeps your scenes working.” See Obsidian’s internal-link help and Atlas’s move and copy guide.

These are separate behaviors: Obsidian’s internal links and Atlas’s scene links are not one shared link system. The Atlas documentation reviewed does not require changing your Obsidian link format. Obsidian supports both wikilinks and Markdown links; its help notes that Markdown links may be useful when interoperability matters, but switching formats is not established as a fix for Atlas links.

Moving content between Atlas collections
Use Atlas’s Asset Manager to move or copy content to another collection. Atlas scene links are limited to a single collection. In the Asset Manager, choose whether linked scenes should move or copy along with the item; choosing the option without linked scenes removes those links. Moving a file in Obsidian’s file explorer is not a substitute for this collection-aware operation. The available controls and behavior are described in the Atlas guide.

Handle sync conflicts
A conflict occurs when the same file changes on two or more devices before they sync. Obsidian Sync merges Markdown using Google’s diff-match-patch algorithm; other file types use last-modified-wins. That difference matters for an Atlas campaign: Markdown notes and non-Markdown assets do not receive the same documented treatment, and a conflict may still need manual review.
Obsidian Sync offers a create-conflict-file option so you can review both versions. The setting is device-specific, so configure it on each device where you want that behavior. If a conflict occurs, check the sync log, compare the conflicting files, and merge the intended changes yourself rather than assuming every version has been combined safely. See Obsidian’s troubleshooting guide.

If links or scenes do not work on the second device
- Atlas scene or collection data is missing: Check whether the whole vault was synced and whether
atlas-vtt, including the relevant collection files, is present in the second copy. - An image or embedded file is missing: Confirm that the file exists in the vault’s configured attachment location and that the folder was included in syncing.
- An Obsidian link stopped resolving after a rename: Check that automatic internal-link updating was enabled when you renamed the file in Obsidian’s file explorer. Obsidian’s link guidance describes this feature.
- A scene link broke after moving content to another collection: Review the move in Atlas’s Asset Manager. Scene links do not cross collection boundaries, and the choice to move or copy linked scenes affects whether those links remain.
- Two devices have different versions of a file: If you use Obsidian Sync, inspect the sync log and any conflict files, then compare and merge the versions. Avoid editing the same campaign file on both devices until syncing has caught up.
- Several sync tools are managing the vault: Stop using multiple services on the same vault and restore from your independent backup if files have been lost or corrupted. Obsidian warns that combining sync services can cause problems; do not try to resolve a broken state by adding another service.
Obsidian’s documentation describes its own link and conflict behavior, while Atlas documents its file layout and collection operations. Neither source certifies every third-party provider, device pair, or configuration, so verify the actual synced copy before using it as the only working campaign vault.
