To sync a Roku voice remote, put the Roku device and remote into pairing mode at the same time. Hold the remote’s pairing button for five seconds until its light flashes; if it has no pairing button, hold Back + Home for five seconds instead. A simple Roku remote has no voice button and does not pair: insert batteries and point it at the device.
Identify which Roku remote you have
- Voice remote: It has a voice or microphone button near the directional pad and connects wirelessly. The pairing control varies by model. Roku’s pairing instructions cover the button and button-free methods.
- Simple remote: It has no voice button and uses infrared (IR). It needs a direct, unobstructed line of sight to the Roku device and does not need pairing. Roku’s simple-remote guidance explains its operation.
Pair a Roku voice remote
Use the Roku settings menu if you have another way to control the device
- On the Roku device, press Home and open Settings > Remotes & devices > Add devices > Remote > Continue.
- Follow the on-screen prompts to put the Roku device into pairing mode.
- Put the voice remote into pairing mode using the button method below, then wait for the on-screen confirmation.
If you do not have a working remote, the Roku mobile app can provide temporary control if it can connect to your Roku device.

Pair without another remote
- Unplug the Roku player or TV from power, wait at least five seconds, then plug it back in.
- Wait for the Roku Home screen to appear.
- Put the voice remote into pairing mode: hold its pairing button for five seconds, or use Back + Home if it has no pairing button.
- Wait for the on-screen pairing message. The Roku device and remote need to be in pairing mode at the same time.
Find the remote’s pairing control
If the remote has a pairing button, look on its back or under the battery cover. Hold it for five seconds until the status light flashes. If there is no pairing button, hold Back + Home together for five seconds until the light flashes.

If you have a simple Roku remote
There is no pairing procedure for an IR simple remote. Insert fresh batteries, remove any battery pull tab, and point the remote at the front of the Roku device. Make sure nothing blocks the signal. Do not use the Back-and-Home pairing sequence; that procedure is for voice remotes.
Pairing does not set up TV power or volume
Connecting a voice remote to Roku is separate from configuring its TV power and volume buttons. If your remote supports TV controls, open Settings > Remotes & devices > Remotes, select your voice remote, then choose Set up remote for TV control and follow the prompts. Compatibility varies by remote and television; HDMI-CEC settings can also affect control. See Roku’s TV-control setup guidance.

Choosing a replacement remote
Before buying a replacement, identify your Roku device model and whether the original remote was a voice or simple remote. Match the replacement to the device: Roku’s voice-remote compatibility information lists supported device and remote models. Check the exact compatibility details for the listing you are considering; remote support is not universal across Roku devices.
