Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTo sync a local-first writing app safely, choose one sync method supported by your app and every device, keep a separate backup, and verify that your files are available locally. Using Obsidian as a concrete example, the safest choice depends on your operating systems, privacy needs, and willingness to manage encryption keys. Obsidian-specific details below should not be assumed to apply to other writing apps.
What syncing changes—and what it does not
A local-first app keeps its working files on your device; syncing copies changes between devices or through a remote service. Obsidian says it stores notes locally so they remain accessible offline. With Obsidian Sync, edits made offline are queued and sent when the internet returns and Obsidian is open. That local availability is useful, but it does not create an independent recovery copy: deletions and unwanted changes can propagate too.

Choose one sync method for the vault
Do not sync the same Obsidian vault through multiple services. Obsidian warns that overlapping sync tools can produce conflicts or corruption. Compare options against your devices and needs:

| Method | Best fit and support | Trade-offs to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Obsidian Sync | Obsidian users who need a first-party option across Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android. | Hosted app sync is described by Obsidian as the most straightforward officially supported option. Offline edits queue until Obsidian is open and connected. Encryption choices and their limits are described below. |
| File-based cloud storage | Users whose provider and operating systems fit Obsidian’s platform guidance. Obsidian recommends iCloud for macOS, iOS, and iPadOS. | Obsidian warns that iCloud Drive on Windows may cause duplication or corruption. Some providers can leave files as online-only placeholders; vault files should be downloaded and locally available. |
| Syncthing | Users prepared to configure shared folders and keep devices available for synchronization. | Obsidian’s guide covers desktop systems and describes Android support as dependent on a community fork. The official Syncthing Android app is no longer maintained. Changes and deletions propagate, so Syncthing is not a backup. |
| Git | Users comfortable with a version-control workflow and manual synchronization. | The Obsidian workflow described in its guide requires manual push and pull. Confirm the current guide for platform support and conflict handling before relying on it. |
Platform behavior changes, so treat these as Obsidian’s documented guidance rather than a guarantee for every device or future release. In particular, do not assume that a cloud provider’s desktop behavior also applies on mobile.
Set up syncing without risking the original vault
- List your devices and operating systems. Confirm that the app and chosen method support each one. For Obsidian, check the current sync guide before choosing.
- Make a separate full-vault copy. Before migrating or configuring sync, copy the vault folder or create a ZIP. Keep this copy outside the sync setup so it is not simply another synchronized version.
- Choose one method. Configure only one sync service for that vault; do not layer Obsidian Sync with iCloud or another file-sync client on the same files.
- Configure the privacy settings. If you choose Obsidian Sync for private notes, decide whether to use end-to-end encryption and store its password somewhere safe outside the vault. The implications are explained in the next section.
- Keep files available offline. With a file-based provider, ensure the vault is downloaded to each device rather than represented only by online-only placeholders.
- Verify across devices. Check representative notes and attachments on each device, confirm sync has finished, and make sure you can locate the independent backup. This is a prudent verification step, not a claim that every app will handle all conflicts automatically.
Understand what Obsidian Sync encryption protects
Obsidian offers end-to-end encryption by default, with standard encryption as an alternative. In end-to-end mode, Obsidian says it cannot read synced notes. Its security documentation describes AES-256 and scrypt in the implementation. Standard encryption uses a key managed by Obsidian; end-to-end encryption instead makes you responsible for the password. If you lose that password, Obsidian cannot recover it and the remote data becomes unusable. The vendor recommends backing up the full vault before rebuilding a remote vault in that situation.

- Solid state performance with up to 800MB/s read speeds in a portable drive. (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device, interface, usage conditions and other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Back up your content and memories on a storage solution that fits seamlessly into your mobile lifestyle.
- Take it with you on your adventures—up to two-meter drop protection means this durable drive can take a beating. (Based on internal testing.)
- Secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind thanks to the tough rubber hook.
- From Sandisk, a brand professional photographers trust to take on assignments.
Encryption applies to the remote vault, not the local files on your devices. A lost or shared device therefore needs its own protection, such as appropriate device-level security; Obsidian Sync does not encrypt the local vault.
End-to-end encryption also does not mean that no metadata is visible. Obsidian says its service exposes metadata including which device uploaded or deleted a file, upload time, and mappings between encrypted paths and content; it also describes deterministic encryption of file hashes. Its security page states that Sync servers are hosted by DigitalOcean in Singapore, Frankfurt, San Francisco, and Sydney, with a server selected automatically based on IP during setup. These are vendor statements and may change.

Keep a backup that sync cannot overwrite
A sync service helps keep working copies aligned; it is not a substitute for an independent backup. Syncthing specifically notes that file modifications and deletions propagate and advises protecting files with other tools. Preserve a full copy of the vault separately, and make sure it is not subject to the same sync operations that could spread accidental deletion or a bad state.
Before moving, resetting, or rebuilding a vault, confirm that devices have finished syncing and preserve the separate copy. Obsidian gives copying the vault folder or creating a ZIP as examples. Syncthing also documents conflict handling and cautions about moving folders or losing a folder marker; consult its FAQ and syncing guide before changing its setup.

When iCloud or Apple device sync is involved
For Obsidian, iCloud is recommended for macOS, iOS, and iPadOS, while Obsidian warns against using iCloud Drive on Windows for a vault because it may cause duplication or corruption. Apple developer documentation says iCloud document synchronization requires the same Apple ID across devices and that apps can detect conflicts and implement a resolution strategy; the exact behavior depends on the app. See Apple’s iCloud synchronization documentation for its developer-level explanation.

Recognize and handle conflicts carefully
A conflict means devices or services have competing states for a file. Do not assume every method resolves those states identically. Obsidian Sync includes conflict-resolution mechanisms; Syncthing documents a procedure for conflicting states. File-based cloud storage can behave differently by platform and app.

- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
- Before resolving a conflict, preserve a separate copy of the affected files or vault.
- Wait for devices to finish their current sync before moving, resetting, or reconfiguring folders.
- For Syncthing, consult its documented conflict procedure and folder guidance rather than deleting unfamiliar conflict copies or markers blindly.
- After any recovery, open representative notes and attachments on the devices that need them.
If you use a different local-first writing app, check its own documentation for conflict files, encryption scope, mobile background behavior, and backup recommendations; Obsidian’s procedures are not universal.
