To switch a Counter-Strike: Global Offensive dedicated server to Counter-Strike 2, install the CS2 server through SteamCMD with app ID 730, not the legacy CS:GO server app ID 740. Create a Steam Game Server Login Token for app 730, start the server with -dedicated, and use cs2.sh on Linux.

Treat the move as a new CS2 installation rather than an in-place CS:GO upgrade. Valve’s current dedicated-server documentation does not establish that old configs, maps, or directory layouts can be copied unchanged, so back up the old server and migrate files selectively only after the new installation starts successfully.

What changed between the CS:GO and CS2 servers?
The most important change is the Steam app ID. Before CS2, the game client used app ID 730 and the CS:GO dedicated server used app ID 740. Valve Developer Community documentation says the CS2 client and dedicated server were merged into app ID 730.

Old tutorials commonly tell administrators to run app_update 740. That downloads the legacy server and will not produce a normal CS2 dedicated-server installation. A Valve Developer Community discussion also notes that some packages or download instructions may show 740 while the installed steam_appid.txt must contain 730. If that file exists, open it and verify that its value is 730; changing it to 740 can prevent players from joining.

Check the server’s minimum requirements
Valve’s dedicated-server wiki lists these minimums:

Leave additional free disk space for updates, validation downloads, logs, and backups. A machine that barely meets the storage figure can fail during an update even when the installed files themselves fit.

Stop the CS:GO service cleanly and make a complete copy of its server directory, configuration files, custom maps, plugins, scripts, and service definition. Keep the backup outside the directory that SteamCMD will use for CS2. Label it with the date and record the old launch command.
Do not assume that a CS:GO configuration is valid for CS2. No authoritative migration procedure establishes that old configs, maps, plugins, or directory structures carry over unchanged. Start with a clean CS2 directory, confirm that it launches, and then introduce one compatible file or component at a time. If a copied file causes a failure, remove it and return to the known-good installation.
Install CS2 with SteamCMD
Windows installation
- Install or unpack SteamCMD in a directory separate from the future CS2 server directory.
- Open a command prompt in the SteamCMD directory.
- Enter SteamCMD’s interactive commands, replacing the path with the directory you want to use:
force_install_dir C:serverscs2
login anonymous
app_update 730 validate
quit - Wait for SteamCMD to finish downloading and validating the files. The
validateoption is appropriate for a first installation because it checks file integrity and downloads damaged or missing files again.
Use a path without restrictive permissions where possible. If SteamCMD reports that it cannot write files, choose a directory the account running the service can read and write, then repeat the installation.

Linux installation
- Install SteamCMD from your distribution’s supported package or from Valve’s SteamCMD distribution.
- Create a dedicated directory for the server and ensure the account that will run it owns that directory.
- Start SteamCMD and run:
force_install_dir /path/to/cs2-server
login anonymous
app_update 730 validate
quit - Check that the installation contains the CS2 launcher script, normally named
cs2.sh. Do not launch the Linux server by invoking the game binary directly when the script is provided.
The first validation can take longer than a routine update because SteamCMD compares the downloaded files and replaces anything that does not match. Do not interrupt it while it is writing the installation.
Verify the app ID after installation
Look for steam_appid.txt in the installed files. When present, it should contain only 730 (with a normal line ending). This file’s value is separate from old CS:GO instructions that refer to app 740. If SteamCMD downloaded the wrong product because an old script used 740, stop and create a fresh directory rather than trying to turn the legacy server into CS2 by editing a few files.
Create a Steam Game Server Login Token
A public CS2 server needs a Steam Game Server Login Token (GSLT) associated with app ID 730. The token authenticates the server to Steam; it is not the password for your personal Steam account and should be treated as a secret.
- Sign in to Steam in a browser with the account that will manage the server.
- Open Steam’s Game Server Account Management page.
- Create a new game-server account and enter
730as the App ID. - Give the entry a recognizable memo, submit it, and copy the generated token.
- Store the token in a protected service configuration or environment file. Do not post it in a forum, commit it to a public repository, or include it in screenshots.
At launch, pass the token with +sv_setsteamaccount. If the token was created for 740, it is for the legacy server and will not substitute for a token created for 730. If a token is exposed, revoke it in Steam’s game-server account management page and create a replacement.
Launch the CS2 dedicated server
Linux
From the CS2 installation directory, launch the supplied script and include both required launch elements:

./cs2.sh -dedicated +sv_setsteamaccount YOUR_GSLT-dedicated tells the merged CS2 application to run as a server. Without it, the normal client can start instead. Replace YOUR_GSLT with the token generated for app 730; keep the token out of shell history where your operating system records commands, or put the command in a protected service definition.
Windows
Run the CS2 executable from the installed server directory with the same flags:
cs2.exe -dedicated +sv_setsteamaccount YOUR_GSLTThe exact executable location depends on where SteamCMD installed the files. Run it from that installation directory so the launcher can find its accompanying libraries and data.
Confirm the first start
Watch the console output rather than assuming that a process staying open means the server is ready. A successful first start should keep the dedicated process running without immediately returning to the shell. If it exits, record the complete error text before changing files; the message usually distinguishes an app-ID problem, a missing library, or an authentication issue.

quitUse app_update 730 validate when files are missing, corrupted, or suspected to be incomplete. Validation can redownload a large amount of data, so schedule it when the server can remain offline. Do not use app_update 740 as an update command for CS2.
After an update, start the server with the same dedicated flag and the app-730 token. Keep a copy of the previous working configuration so that you can identify whether a failure was caused by the update or by a configuration change.

The game client opens instead of a server
This normally means the launch command omitted -dedicated or the wrong executable was started. Stop the process, return to the CS2 installation directory, and run the platform-specific command with -dedicated. On Linux, use ./cs2.sh rather than launching the binary directly.

Players cannot join
- Confirm that the installation came from
app_update 730, not 740. - Open
steam_appid.txt, if present, and verify that it says730. - Confirm that the launch command includes
+sv_setsteamaccountfollowed by a GSLT created for app 730. - If the token was copied incorrectly or revoked, create a new one and restart the server.
- If you reused an old directory, install CS2 into a clean directory and test that copy before reintroducing custom files.
The app-ID check is especially important when a hosting script or an old CS:GO tutorial silently inserts 740.
Linux reports that it cannot open steamclient.so
Third-party CS2 server guides report startup failures when the required steamclient.so library is not available at the location expected by the launcher. The symptom is typically an error stating that the shared object cannot be opened.
First confirm that SteamCMD completed the installation and that a copy of steamclient.so exists somewhere in the SteamCMD or server files. Then compare the library location and required symbolic-link target with the current Valve Linux dedicated-server instructions for your distribution. Create the symlink using the path required by that installation layout, check it with ls -l, and start the server again through cs2.sh. Do not copy a path from an unrelated CS:GO guide: directory layouts differ, and a link pointing to a nonexistent file produces the same startup symptom.
The server crashes when run under a personal Steam account
Forum users have reported crashes when the server runs under their own Steam account; at least one user reported using a separate dummy account. These are user reports, not a Valve-supported requirement. Before changing accounts, test a clean installation, verify the app-730 token, and run the process with the minimum launch options. If you choose a separate account, protect it as a server-only identity and create the GSLT for app 730.

Free at least the documented 65 GB before starting. Validation may need temporary space while replacing files, and an update can fail even when the final installation would fit. Remove obsolete CS:GO files only after confirming that your backup is complete and that no service still points to the old directory.
The process exits immediately after an update
Run app_update 730 validate, then launch from the installation directory using the platform-appropriate command. If it still exits, temporarily move custom configs, plugins, and copied maps out of the server directory and test the clean files. Add components back individually so the incompatible file is identifiable.
Handling configs, maps, and plugins after the switch
There is no confirmed one-command migration that guarantees CS:GO configs, maps, plugins, or server directories will work in CS2. Preserve the old files, but do not overwrite the clean CS2 installation before its first successful start.
- Start the untouched CS2 installation with the app-730 token.
- Stop it and copy only the smallest required configuration set from the backup.
- Restart and check the console for errors.
- Repeat for custom maps, scripts, and plugins, one category or file at a time.
- Keep a written record of each change and retain the last known-good copy.
A file that was valid for CS:GO may refer to commands, paths, or extensions that CS2 no longer supports. Removing that file and returning to the clean installation is safer than repeatedly editing a directory whose state is unknown.

Switch-over checklist
- Back up the complete CS:GO server and record its launch command.
- Reserve at least 65 GB of storage and check the operating-system requirement.
- Install CS2 with SteamCMD using app ID 730.
- Validate the first installation with
app_update 730 validate. - Check
steam_appid.txtand confirm the value is 730. - Create a GSLT specifically for app 730.
- Launch with
-dedicated; on Linux, usecs2.sh. - Test the clean server before copying any legacy files.
- For later updates, use
app_update 730; reserve validation for suspected file problems.
The Bottom Line
The reliable migration path is a clean CS2 installation from SteamCMD app 730, a GSLT created for 730, and a launch command containing -dedicated (with cs2.sh on Linux). Keep the CS:GO server as a backup and migrate custom files only after the new server runs.
