Official servers are handled by Funcom rather than by individual owners. Exiled Lands characters, followers and bases move forward, while Isle of Siptah requires special preparation because the maps are merged and physical coordinates change.

What the UE5 switch actually changes
Conan Exiles Enhanced is a separate Unreal Engine 5 server build, not merely a graphics toggle inside the old UE4 installation. On Steam, the dedicated-server directory changes from Conan Exiles Dedicated Server to Conan Exiles Enhanced Dedicated Server. Your existing UE4 files remain where they were; when the Enhanced server first runs, it reads the UE4 save and creates separate Enhanced save data.
The important file for a private server is ConanSandbox/Saved/game.db. Funcom identifies this database as the file that carries characters and structures into the new version. Configuration files, administrative settings and mods are separate from the database and must be reviewed for the Enhanced installation.

Conversion is not reversible at the database level. UE5 can read a UE4 database, but UE4 cannot read a database after it has been converted to UE5. A Legacy fallback therefore depends on preserving the original UE4 database before the first Enhanced launch.
Preflight checks before you touch the server
Complete these checks while the UE4 server is still running normally. They reduce the risk of converting an incomplete save or discovering after downtime that your host cannot launch the new build.

The stated Enhanced rollout is for PC Steam. Official servers move to UE5, while Epic Games Store and Windows Store players cannot access official servers from launch under the Steam-only rollout described by Funcom.
- Confirm administrative access. You need permission to stop the service, copy files, install or select the Enhanced build, and restore files if verification fails.
- Check host readiness. Ask the provider whether it offers the Enhanced dedicated-server build, how it imports an existing
game.db, which mods are supported, and how backups and restores work. Funcom says it cannot collaborate with every company that provides hosting, so support is not universal. - Schedule downtime. No universal migration duration is published. Announce a maintenance window long enough to stop the old process, copy the database, install the new build and perform an in-game check.
- Record the current setup. Note the server name, password, admin list, difficulty and gameplay settings, mod list and load order. Keep copies of the relevant configuration files so you can reproduce the server in the Enhanced directory.
- Warn players about the client update. Every client must run a version that matches the server. A player on an older build may be unable to connect even when the database conversion succeeded.
- Plan for Isle of Siptah. If your world is Siptah, read the map-specific section below before shutting down. Base preservation is not equivalent to an Exiled Lands upgrade.
Private dedicated-server migration: exact procedure
1. Stop the UE4 process cleanly
Use your host control panel or service manager to stop the Conan Exiles Dedicated Server. Wait until the process is fully stopped before copying files. A live process can still be writing the database, leaving the backup in an inconsistent state.
2. Make two independent backups of game.db
Open the UE4 installation’s ConanSandbox/Saved directory and copy game.db to a location outside the server folder. Keep one copy on a separate disk, such as an external USB hard drive or server backup drive, and retain another in your normal backup system. Do not move the only copy; copy it so the original remains untouched.
Label the backup clearly as the pre-UE5 UE4 database and record the date. Also preserve the original UE4 server directory if your storage plan allows. The backup is your only practical route to relaunching the old world on a Legacy build.
3. Install or select the Enhanced dedicated-server build
In Steam, install or select the Conan Exiles Enhanced dedicated server. The directory is named Conan Exiles Enhanced Dedicated Server, replacing the older Conan Exiles Dedicated Server folder name. Do not delete the old directory until you have verified the new world.

If a hosting provider performs this step, ask it to confirm the build name and the location of the Enhanced ConanSandbox/Saved directory before it imports anything.
4. Recreate configuration and mod files
Copy or recreate the settings required by your server in the Enhanced installation. Preserve the correct configuration files and review every mod for Enhanced compatibility. A database can be valid while a missing or incompatible mod prevents the server from starting or causes assets to be absent in game.
Do not blindly overwrite newly generated Enhanced files when a provider supplies a migration tool. Compare the existing settings with the Enhanced defaults, then apply only the values you intend to keep.
5. Place the backup in the Enhanced save directory
Copy the backed-up game.db into the Enhanced installation’s corresponding ConanSandbox/Saved directory. Verify the path and filename character for character. The file should be in the Enhanced server’s save folder, not merely beside the executable or in the old UE4 directory.

6. Start the Enhanced server once
Launch the server and allow it to complete its first startup without interrupting it. Funcom states that UE4 save files remain in place and are converted to separate Conan Exiles Enhanced save files when the updated server runs. The first launch is therefore the conversion event.
Do not replace your untouched backup with any file created after this launch. If the server reports an error, stop it and troubleshoot using the original backup rather than repeatedly modifying the only copy.

7. Verify the world before reopening it to everyone
Join with an administrator account and check the items that matter most to your community:
- Character inventories, levels and locations
- Clan membership and permissions
- Bases, placed structures and building ownership
- Followers, thralls, pets and their locations
- Storage containers and crafting stations
- Server settings, password and admin commands
- Mod-dependent items and assets
Have at least one ordinary player test a normal login. A successful administrator login alone does not prove that every client, permission or mod is working.

Tell players to update Conan Exiles before connecting. Funcom’s server FAQ requires the client version to match the server version. If only some players cannot connect, compare their displayed game build with the server build before changing the database.
9. Keep the UE4 backup permanently
After the Enhanced world is stable, archive the original database rather than deleting it. The backup is useful for investigating missing data and is required if you decide that the community must remain on a Legacy server. The converted database itself cannot be sent back to UE4.
Migration checks and recovery when something is wrong

What happens on official servers
Official Steam PC server upgrades are performed by Funcom. On Exiled Lands, Funcom says characters, followers and bases are carried forward. Players do not perform the private-server file copy, but they should still prepare for downtime and update their clients.
Exiled Lands
Exiled Lands is the straightforward case: the official upgrade preserves the principal world progression named by Funcom—characters, followers and bases. Normal server-side maintenance remains outside the player’s control, so the practical preparation is to note your server, update the game client and wait for the official service to return.

Isle of Siptah
Isle of Siptah is different. Enhanced combines Siptah and Exiled Lands on one server, and the physical coordinates change when the maps are merged. Funcom therefore cannot preserve Siptah bases and placed structures in the same way.
Before an official Siptah server enters downtime, dismantle bases and move materials into follower inventories. Clan members should transfer follower ownership to individual characters where needed. This protects portable resources and prevents a clan member from losing access to a follower during the transition, but it does not preserve a Siptah building at its old coordinates.
After the upgrade, travel between Exiled Lands and Siptah occurs within the combined world without restarting the server. Access to the Siptah content still requires ownership of its DLC.
Preserve a character before an irreversible change
If you need to keep a character available on a different server type or want a personal fallback before moving into Enhanced, use the in-game transfer system before the conversion. The path is Esc → Character → Server Transfer.
Transfers are constrained by server category. Funcom describes the allowed direction as:
- Official PvP
- Official PvE-C
- Official PvE
- Private Dedicated
- Single Player/Co-op
The transfer has a one-day cooldown. A single-player character cannot be imported to a dedicated server; a private-server character cannot be imported to an official server; and a PvE character cannot be imported to PvP. These restrictions mean that a transfer is not a general-purpose backup and does not replace the server-owner database copy.

For a private owner who may need to abandon the UE5 conversion, the reliable sequence is to stop the UE4 server, back up game.db, transfer any characters that qualify under the rules, and only then launch Enhanced. Once the database has been converted, the old server cannot consume the new database.

Steam-only rollout considerations
Funcom’s stated UE5 rollout is for PC Steam. All official PC servers move to UE5, but Epic Games Store and Windows Store players cannot access official servers from launch under that rollout. A private server owner should tell players which storefront and build the server supports before scheduling the switch.
Questions to ask a private host
Because there is no universal host-by-host compatibility list, obtain written answers to these questions:
- Is the Conan Exiles Enhanced dedicated-server build available now?
- Can the host import an existing UE4
game.dbwithout replacing the original backup? - Where exactly is the Enhanced
ConanSandbox/Saveddirectory? - Which configuration files and mods must be migrated manually?
- Are automated backups taken before the first Enhanced launch?
- Can the host restore the pre-conversion UE4 files to a separate Legacy instance?
- How are failed starts and corrupted uploads handled?
Funcom says it is working with some hosting providers on UE5 readiness but cannot collaborate with every provider. Treat a host’s confirmation, not a generic “Conan server” label, as the deciding evidence.
Plan disk space for clients
Funcom lists the Enhanced client at 68 GB in 2026, compared with approximately 120 GB for the previous client. These are published client figures, not a guarantee of the free space required by a particular dedicated-server installation. Leave additional room for the old UE4 directory, the new Enhanced files, backups and temporary update data if you want a rollback option.

Choose the safe path for your server
Move now when your host confirms Enhanced support, your players can run matching Steam clients, your mods are ready, and you have a tested pre-UE5 backup. Delay the conversion when a host cannot explain its import and restore process, when a critical mod has no Enhanced support, or when your community needs to keep making progress on UE4.
If your world is on Isle of Siptah, treat the upgrade as a relocation rather than a normal save transfer: dismantle bases, secure materials in followers and assign follower ownership before downtime. If your world is on Exiled Lands, the documented private-server process is primarily a controlled database and configuration migration.
The non-negotiable safeguard is simple: preserve game.db before the first Enhanced launch, keep it outside the server directory, and never confuse a successful startup with a recoverable rollback. Once UE5 has converted the live database, only that original UE4 copy can provide a Legacy fallback.
