Use one FFmpeg process for the whole program and join the videos before they reach YouTube. For compatible files, test the concat demuxer; when the inputs differ or packet-level joining gives poor boundaries, normalize and re-encode with the concat filter. Neither method guarantees a black-frame-free YouTube playback for every source: inspect the actual transitions and audio before relying on the stream.
Why switching outputs can create a black frame
If a script stops one FFmpeg process and starts another for each video, the output is no longer one uninterrupted encoding process. A gap, timestamp discontinuity, or encoder restart at that handoff may appear as a blank or frozen frame in playback. The more controllable design is to create a single continuous program from the clips and send that program through one FFmpeg output to YouTube.

This addresses the transition inside your FFmpeg program; it cannot guarantee how YouTube ingests, processes, or plays every stream. The official FFmpeg documentation explains concatenation and stream mapping, not a YouTube-side guarantee against black frames.

Choose the right concat method
| Method | What it does | Best fit | Main caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Concat demuxer | Reads a manifest and joins packets from listed files; it can avoid re-encoding. | Inputs with compatible streams and a suitable output/container. | Codec and stream compatibility matter. Inaccurate duration directives can cause artifacts, and edit points do not guarantee clean visual cuts. |
| Concat filter | Decodes inputs, joins the resulting streams, then typically encodes the output. | Inputs that need normalization or where packet-level joining is unsuitable. | Requires encoding work and may introduce generation loss; provide compatible filter inputs and map the outputs correctly. |
| Concat protocol | Concatenates resources at the protocol level. | Only when the specific format and inputs support this approach. | It is not a universal substitute for the demuxer or filter; confirm format requirements in the installed FFmpeg documentation. |
FFmpeg’s FAQ recommends the concat filter when re-encoding is needed and describes the concat demuxer as an option when avoiding re-encoding. See the FFmpeg FAQ on concatenating video files and the concat demuxer documentation.

Inspect the files before building a playlist
Compare every clip, not just the first two. Use ffprobe to inspect each file, then note the video dimensions, frame rate, pixel format, time base, codec parameters, whether audio exists, audio sample rate, and channel layout. The point is to identify differences that affect joining or require normalization; there is no single compatible-file checklist that covers every codec and output.
ffprobe -v error -show_streams -show_format -of json "clip1.mp4"
Repeat with the other filenames. If a clip has no audio while another does, or if frame sizes, rates, or audio layouts differ, account for that explicitly in the workflow rather than assuming the inputs will line up.

Branch A: use the concat demuxer for compatible files
1. Create a manifest
Put the clips in playback order in a plain-text file named list.txt. For ordinary local filenames without apostrophes, a manifest can look like this:
file 'clip1.mp4'
file 'clip2.mp4'
file 'clip3.mp4'
Use paths that FFmpeg can access from the working directory where the command runs. The demuxer also supports directives such as duration, inpoint, and outpoint, but do not guess durations to force the sequence to fit: the documentation warns that inaccurate duration information can cause artifacts. With non-intra-frame codecs, packets or decoded frames around requested edit points may be included, so a manifest edit point alone does not ensure a clean visual cut.

- 【What You Get】Includes: HDMI Capture Card, USB 3.0 to USB-C Adapter, User Manual. Tips: Make sure your tablet’s OTG function is enabled before connecting. Test your HDMI device with a monitor first to confirm video and audio output, then connect to the Video Capture Card for recording.
2. Try packet-level joining
For a compatible set of files and a container that supports the resulting streams, test a stream-copy output:
ffmpeg -f concat -safe 0 -i list.txt -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a? -c copy joined.mp4
-f concat selects the concat demuxer, -safe 0 permits paths that do not meet the demuxer’s safe-path rules, and the maps select the first video stream and optional audio stream. Use -safe 0 only with a manifest you control. -c copy copies encoded packets rather than re-encoding; it does not make incompatible inputs compatible. If the command errors, the output has broken timing, or a boundary is not clean, switch to a normalized filter workflow rather than assuming YouTube will repair it.

Branch B: normalize and join with the concat filter
When inputs vary, decode them, make their video and audio streams consistent, concatenate the normalized streams, and encode one output. The following is a pattern—not a universal copy-paste command. It assumes exactly two inputs, both with audio, intended output dimensions of 1920×1080 at 30 frames per second, and stereo audio at 48 kHz. Change the normalization values to match your program and delivery needs.

The scale-and-pad steps preserve the source aspect ratio while fitting the chosen canvas. If either input lacks audio, this example needs an audio stream created or a filter graph adapted to the actual inputs; do not reference a nonexistent a:0. For more clips, add a normalized filter chain and pass the video/audio pairs to the concat filter in order, updating n to the number of segments. FFmpeg’s concat FAQ explains why the filter is the appropriate route when re-encoding is needed.

Map streams deliberately and validate the result
Explicit -map options prevent FFmpeg’s automatic stream selection from silently choosing an unintended video or audio stream. The FFmpeg manual describes automatic selection rules, including selection based on video resolution and audio channel count; those rules may not match the program you mean to publish. With a filter graph, map each labeled output exactly once. See the FFmpeg stream-selection documentation.
- Review the joined file. Play or inspect the output around every transition, not only at the beginning and end. Look for black or frozen frames, unexpected scaling, and audio gaps or jumps.
- Check timing at boundaries. If the demuxer output misbehaves, inspect the input durations and edit points and consider the filter route. Do not treat a manifest directive as proof of a frame-accurate visual cut.
- Test the actual live path. If the local output looks clean, test a private or otherwise appropriate YouTube stream and inspect playback around the transitions. A clean local file does not establish that every ingest or player state will behave identically.
- Check your installed FFmpeg version. The online FFmpeg manual tracks the newest revision and is regenerated nightly, so options may differ from the build on your machine. Check the local
ffmpeg -versionoutput and its matching help or documentation. See FFmpeg documentation.
Troubleshoot a transition that still flashes black
- The concat demuxer rejects the files or produces a malformed result: compare codec parameters, stream presence, time bases, and container compatibility. Normalize and re-encode with the concat filter if packet-level joining is not suitable.
- Black or repeated frames appear only at a cut: inspect the source frames and the output around that exact boundary. For demuxer joins, check edit points and duration values; non-intra-frame codecs may include packets or frames around an edit point.
- Audio drops out or becomes misaligned: check whether each clip has audio and whether sample rates and channel layouts match. The filter example requires audio on both inputs; adapt it if that assumption is false.
- The wrong video or audio stream appears: add explicit input mappings, and for a filter graph map the intended labeled outputs once each.
- The local file is clean but the YouTube player is not: compare the local boundary with the live playback and test the complete output path. The cited FFmpeg documentation does not identify a specific YouTube ingest or player cause or guarantee a platform-side fix.
